I had a Merry Christmas to me moment as I bought Jim’s CS-24…just got it last week and had a chance to take it on its maiden voyage Saturday morning.

Went to a ranch north of my hometown of Russell, Kansas. The ranch lays in the Saline River valley, and probably has the prettiest scenery in this part of the state. This was only the second time I have called this particular spot—the first time was with Lance and his partner, Kevin, when they spent a day calling with me a couple of years ago.

As my friend and I walked in, we had coyotes howling north of us, and a large group of turkeys feeding and chatting back and forth in front of us. As we got set up on a 50+ acre cut feed field bordering the river, the large flock, (100+ birds), were feeding away from us about 200 yards distant.

I took Jim’s advice and ended up playing the Adult Cottontail after some coyote vocalizations in the cold, frosty morning air.

After about 5 minutes, the turkeys started raising hell and then parted like the Red Sea. A coyote was on a dead run towards me, followed by its partner about 50 yards behind.

I guess Mr. Murphy was on my shoulder as I was facing southwest and said coyote was burning in from the southeast.

My AR was on a bipod, with the scope set at 10X…coyote gets to 50, 40, 30, 20 and finally 15 yards and I hadn’t caught up with him in the scope yet. I get a revelation and figure if I bark him to a stop, I can find him and shoot. I really was wishing I had brought the shotgun instead of the rifle at this point.

Well….all the bark did was shift him into hyperdrive straight away from me. My friend was about 30 yards to my right and already up on his gun. He performed a 55 grain ear wax removal treatment on said runner.

When I FINALLY caught up with him in the scope, I was rewarded with a beautiful gymnastics routine of a double front somersault with a beautiful landing and a 10 foot chin slide that would have made Lorenzo Cain of the KC Royals proud!

Second coyote decided it would bug out for health reasons and made it to the safety of the brush at the river’s edge. It continued to raise hell with us for about 10 minutes before it finally quieted down.

We were rewarded with a large male coyote with no mange…Jim, I am sorry…dripped coyote blood on the caller!

If someone will instruct me how to post a pic, I will put it up! (just figured it out!)

Ha! Love it when a plan comes together! That thing is 100% on maiden voyages now. And that ain't the first blood it's had on it, surely not the last. My smile is ear to ear right now.

Now, there's nothing wrong with that sound labeled "adult cottontail", no flies on it at all. "Grown cottontail" is where the magic lies.

ETA: Did the FOXBANG kick in when your partner shot? I had it set so it would come on only when I shot, since I hunt mostly solo. When your partner shoots first, you will need to manually hit the #1 preset to get the pup distress going. Might have drug #2 back out of the brush....or not.

I'm still a hold out.

So, I know Dave is really positive about the new remote;

DO I NEED IT?

I guess upgrading the old one isn't an option?

Do you need it? No, probably not. How bad you want it is a personal matter. Dave's recommendation and some lingering contest credit @ FOXPRO pushed me over the edge. The new remote is much easier to read, much easier to navigate, has more and easier to get to presets, and a bunch of bells and whistles that I may, or may not, ever use.

The new caller got off to a pretty good start, too. Over Thanksgiving weekend, on 3 half day hunts, it called in 18 coyotes.

ETA: No Tom, upgrading is not an option. Categorizing your sounds is done with a utility and downloaded to the remote. Totally different from the old one.

Thanks, guys! Like I said, I am a default caller—only going when I have time, so it was great the stars lined up!

Jim—the FoxBang did not start when my partner shot as he was 30 yards away from the caller, but it did when I threw a round at the other coyote. I looked for the ‘Grown Cottontail’ on the remote, but didn’t see it—will have to look again!

Dave—My AR is a D-Tech .223—DPMS lower and an Olympic Arms upper with a 20” fluted bull barrel topped with a 4X12 Leupold and dipped in NatGear camo. Shoots very good at targets at 10X—not so good at coyotes [Wink] —will have to remember to turn down the scope then next time it goes with me!

PS: Also forgot to say that coyotes are bringing $15 in our neck of the woods...

The "Foxbang" feature is something that sounds good, but I can't say that it has made the difference enough times that I couldn't live without it. For $85, I don't think I would bother with it, next time? Oh shit, it's only money, probably maybe?

Good hunting. El Bee

I've been using the CS-24B for a few seasons.. Great caller! Good features ..

To program is a process though; need a USB cable to caller to transfer sounds.. And another cable to sync the remote..

I don't use foxbang; my preset is used for another sound..

The one thing I don't like is you have to use the caller to preview sounds.. Wish the software would allow that..

Again, had it not been for contest credit, I would have done without FOXBANG. After having it for a while and learning to lean on it, it's nice to be able to keep your mind on your business after firing the first shot, instead of grabbing for the remote. I believe all the newer models include it.

The Fox Bang feature is a "must have" for killing multiple Coyotes that answer to the call at the same time. It's a no brainer.

Come on LB, don't be so damn cheap!Open up that brief case of yours and spend some of that doe!

Wonder if they got a payment plan that would fit my budget of ten bucks a week?

Multiples? I vaguely remember?

With a suppressed rifle, what use is it? They just stand around looking confused anyway, right? [Smile]
