Remove the underscore from the "[IMG]" Or, copy/paste the "direct" link into the IMAGE tab, located below the text box...
Hows the throat on that rifle? When was the last time you cleaned the barrel?
Possible there's a carbon ring, or other fouling in the tube that could be compromising the bullet's jacket?
Just spit ballin'. But that entrance doesn't look too huge? I've hit a coyote raking shoulder bone with my .17P, and had the same sized 'splash' as shown... [ October 28, 2016, 04:00 AM: Message edited by: knockemdown ]

Have you tried any of Chan Nagel's 30s yet?
Never messed with any of the Golds except the 30's but they have worked very well for me. Killed over 400 coyote with them now and sometimes get some big exits but never any splash. Running them closer to 4100 fps. Don't think they are available at the moment though, since Todd sold his dies.
But, the 30 gr. Nagels kill just as well for me.

I'm no resource on 17's, but just a comment on Berger discontinuing stuff that works. WTF?
Carbon ring sounds like where you might begin.

I shoot both the 27 and 30 grain golds and like Dave have had some bigger exits once in a while but never a splash. And I am running them between 4000-4100 fps. I have probably shot a couple hundred Coyotes with the two bullets I mentioned. I do wish Berger still made there 25 grain Match. Probably the best fur bullet I have used. I also have a few 26 grain Genco Bthp's too. They work well too, the few I have shot with them.

I'm getting low on the old discontinued Bergers, so just today I called to order some bullets from Chan and he's running low and only let me buy 200 of his 30 grain bullets. Said he's having a little bit of problem with jacket material. SO, if you're wanting some of his, better get your order in.
BUT like Chad and Dave, I've not had any problem with surface splash out of my .17/204, and I'm running closer to 3900 fps with it. I've used mostly the old Bergers, but did use some Golds before I found more of these Bergers.

Thanks for fixing the pic Knockem' I believe the barrel is clean but I will double check it.
I haven't tried any of the Nagels yet, but I suppose I should order some. I'm running out of options.

On the plus side ( if there is one) I took the shotgun yesterday. First time I've used a shotgun in years. I've never seen such a white coyote in the mountains. They're usually a lot darker. Shot him at 12 yards.
Anyways, thanks for the responses everyone. I like to have my rifles ready to go by now. It's getting a little late in the year to be doing load development..... Thanks. [ October 30, 2016, 03:01 PM: Message edited by: Lungbuster ]

at 12 yards I'll bet there wasn't even a twitch left after the hit.
