Too much emotion. Females. If these beasts are overrunning their range, shoot 'em. They are quite literally, useless. Somebody's idea of the romantic wild west?
It's like a lot of things. A very vocal minority dictate policy. I don't have a hell of a lot against horses, but they do compete with actual native species including jackrabbits and pronghorn, for example.
Tom and I run into a herd that must have numbered at least 300, one time. As far as I know, that's highly unusual. Most herds I have seen are usually (maybe) 10, 20, 30, 40, or so? But several hundred? I have no idea how that happened? And, we drove right through the middle of the herd, some of them didn't even get up. That's no shit.

Try calling in a herd of feral burros.
It can get rather intense.
Here's an idea.............relocate the horses & burros into the wolf recovery areas.

Sounds like they will finally do something about all those worthless feral horses.Need to do that with the burros also.Burros make horses look tame when it comes to taking over water holes and areas of much needed browse and grasses for the native critters that rightfully should be theirs.
Have no love at all for invasive species.

Good, we are all in agreement!
It will not mean a thing compared to the emotional testimony from a couple blonde ponytails and that's it, case closed! Protect those magnificent creatures, at all cost! As I said above, it's an emotional subject, forget about facts and logic.
Think about it! The whole program, Helicopters, Transportation, Holding pastures, Feed and upkeep, Veterinary services, Birth control? What am I missing?
As far as I am concerned, as an animal control specialist myself, I think the sensible thing to do is shoot the bastards. Not to wipe them out, just bring them under control. They deserve no more consideration than the lowly coyote, by some argument, maybe less consideration?

Shoot them all they have no business there , process the meat give it to the food banks its good protein something lacking in most food banks. If the USDA is going to do something let them do something real. There are sufficient breeders to supply all the little girls ponies ! And most of the whiners don't know one end of a horse from another! KOKO nailed it ,invasive species .

Here's the deal, bunny huggers want cattle off the range. See then there would be plenty to eat for the horses.
I know some ranchers can be real dicks, most are pretty cool. Most of us would rather see cattle out there than horses. Plus as far as habitat goes horses require quite a bit of forage @ water.
I know when I had a few horses on my place vs a few cows. I can tell the difference. To this day when my neighbors horses get loose, they come over & pull up the grass in my yard, run around. They are big muscle athletic beasts compared to a cow.
I'm not a finicky yard guy mind you. I have a small yard, but I see them bite down & just pull out the grass leaving bare spots.
If the city bunny huggers would slow down a bit, they might realize cows & deer & prairie goats & such are easier on the range than mustangs.
I doubt that will happen though.

Typical liberal response. When the facts fail them, they resort to emotion.
While horse slaughtering plants are taboo here in the states, they eat horse a lot in Europe, especially France.
Guess it is on the menu at many upscale Paris eateries...

They say, historically, Indians preferred horse meat to beef. I don't know if it was: First bison, then horse, then what? Elk pronghorn etc etc. But that's what I read, more than once, that they preferred horse meat to beef.
That's another thing, the "horse chicks" managed to ban horse slaughter in the US. For all I know, they also banned export for purposes of consumption?
So, where are we getting our baseballs? So far as I know, from the Dominican? But where do they get their raw material? As was said, horsehide is some very good quality leather, superior to cow in durability.
