Played hooky from work and went calling for cats this morning. I dont know what it is, but they are thick as fleas this year. My plan was to make some quick stands, calling to the edges of some thick areas that I normally save for grey fox. I know there are cats here, and it's easy to get to, so I figured what the heck. Grabbed the ol Mossy 835 and went to it.

I must have set up right on top of him, because right off the bat, first stand, about 1 minute into it, this big ass male comes in. I have the new CS24C speaker set to my left only about 10 yards away, playing a baby cottontail song. I immediatly see some legs moving through the brush, then lose them. A few LONG seconds later, I see a tail wagging though a hole in the bushes, so I figure he's still interested. Then, he creeps forward into the open, stalking the speaker, and immediatly stops, turns his head and stares a hole right through me. I pull the trigger and Dead Coyote T shot to the cranium. Got a second cat but pic will not show up in Flikr for some reason.
Anyhoo...dead cat.

way to go Mark. Love it when a plan comes together.

Thanks guys, second one rolled into a plain old cottontail-ish enclosed reed call.

There's always a lot of cats around these parts but this year I've been seeing a lot more of em. Or at least they're out and about more. Everytime I turn around I see one crossing the road or sitting on a rock or whatever. Lot of guys are whacking them pretty good this year and saying the same thing.

Congrats! I've focused my efforts in December for cats.. Only got one so far...:-(

I tell you what , the best piece of equipment is the turkey lounge chair.. I can do 30 minute stands and feel like falling asleep it's so comfy..

I carry a canvas covered pad that I sit on. It's real thin and great for throwing over barbed wire fences so I can cross. Have a lot of those up around here.
I've called up a few more cats since I started this thread. Called up a couple for a buddy and his son. Great fun to help them get a cat to mount.
edit: I've threatened to try one of the loungers, just not sure if I want to carry it?

OMG! Did you kill that cat? Is that legal? Such a beautiful animal and now it's possibly dead...
are you gonna eat it? My dad told me to never shoot nothin' 'less you was gon' eat it.

I see lots of T shot sticking like that on coyotes too.
That's a hell of a nice knife.

Wow! I'd never heard of Winston Knives and just took a look and they make some real beauties. I better start saving my pennies if I want one. Probably a long waiting list...

Nice cat, btw.

Loco, where have you been?

Hi Dan,
I've been arrowhead hunting. It has become a pretty fun summer hobby. It Has kinda replaced fishing not by design though. I love fishing but I realize I haven't been very much the last couple years. I have also been working and trying to find work. Almost starved to death the last couple years but by God's grace, we are really busy again!

How are things with you? Any cats killed this year?

Danny, I was told you were a gold coin trader? We all know how value has increased, since the last time you posted. Hope things are looking up for you?

I remember Danny Batistini telling me that after he was laid off from his hospital job of more than 20 years, he had to sell his guns. That's pretty bad. Good thing his fourth wife had some money.

Hi Loco...
Found this bad boy a while back out calling. Found another one in the same area, but white, and a bit bigger, and in perfect shape. Dont know if this an arrowhead or little spearhead?

Possibly an Atlatl point.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on January 13, 2015, 07:38 AM:

It's a spear point. Actual arrowheads are in the 3/4 to half inch range. The physics say that those bigger "arrowheads" when cast, (whether from an atlatl or not) start tipping and never arrive point first. An actual arrowhead, and for the Paleohunter, these arrows were not fletched, but the usually had a two part arrow with the front section made out of reed material and for aerodynamics.

That's a nice one in obsidian. I have one about that size, black, but the tip is broken. I guess it's just easier to find large "projectile points" than tiny arrowheads?

I collected some knapped pieces up in Nevada, a couple weeks ago, scrapers actually. Jasper.

Called in two cats the other night, but we can't shoot them in New Jersey.

That's New Jersey for ya. Stupid liberal laws, just like Kalifornia, but with bad weather. Plus, everybody driving around in their Lincoln, with a body in the trunk. What's not to like?

Well that sucks 49..

Interesting we have a two month season in Idaho. I've never seen a bobcat ?

^ that's hard to believe, Dave.

I don't know. Wouldn't doubt that some have been called in ? Just never noticed I suppose ?

There's no shortage of Lion sign in my area's can't miss those footprints.

Hmm? That might be a partial answer? I'm told that lions kill bobcat when they have a chance, so it could be they are scarce in your places? Or, very cautious. Don't know?

But from what I have seen of southern Idaho, it's damned good habitat.

Dave, I really want a cat mount for the mantel.

Leonard, that is too funny. I think that was from the movie "Goodfellas." My father grew up in Newark in the 40's and 50's, and that was the way it was back then.

nope, The Godfather. See, the "driver" was a rat, so they had him drive over to Joisey where he was told to pulled over so fat man could take a leak while the guy in the back seat shot the driver in the head. Zipped up and said; "Take the Canoli, leave the gun".

Don't blame me, that's Hollywood's impression of New Jersey.

I spent about three days at Fort Dix before being shipped to Germany, just before Christmas 1960. That's how it was; (I swear) all the Lincoln's had a body in the trunk! [Smile]

I did some training down at Fort Dix. The place is blistering hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter.

I can verify the freezing cold in the winter, at Ft Dix. From there we went to the Brooklyn Naval Yard, which is where they kept the troop transports. The USS Gordon had my name on it. Great experience, Christmas on the North Atlantic, 40 foot swells. And, just my luck the slowest ship in the fleet. Not to mention, everybody else in my unit flew! But, I went home on leave for 15 days before stationed USAEUR. Those were the days.

Lots of points to be found around Barstow. When I lived there a friend and I would spend entire days looking for them. We both had a good collection. When Pete died of cancer his went to the San Bernardino Museum Society. Each point was documented as to where it was found. When I moved to Alaska I donated what I had.

Where I hunt in eastern Oregon I'm always tripping over artifacts. I leave them be. I find places where there are a lot of chips and chunks of obsidian where someone was making points.

In all the years I've called in eastern Oregon I have yet to call in a bobcat. You have to get a furtaker's permit and tags and I don't even bother any more. Lots of bobcats here on the west side. I've called them in locally and have seen them when I've been out fishing.

That's a nice looking cat.

Moe, south-eastern Oregon is LOADED with bobcat! That whole area, the extreme northern tier of Nevada and extreme southern Oregon and Idaho is home to some of the finest Lynx-cats in north America. They just don't get any better.

I know that eastern Oregon cats fetch a high price. Like $750. I know a few guys who live over in Burns and hunt a lot more than I do and only get maybe one cat per year and they've all been taken on private property.

I know there are bobcats over there but I've never called one in. I generally head to California to hunt every Fall and I've called a few cats in down there. In Arizona, too, but as yet haven't called one in eastern Oregon. It looks looks great bobcat country, too.

I once killed five cats in one night, in northern Nevada. The problem now is they changed things and cut out non residents.

I have been told that there is one guy up in Fallon that took 400 cats two years ago.
