Topic: .22 Hollowpointing tool

Have any of you guys messed around with a .22 LR hollow pointing tool, or the tool where you can file off the round nose into a flat nose like a wadcutter?
Finding myself with too much time on my hands and got to thinking that I saw some tools that do this.
Did a bit of research and saw some of the tools go for upwards of $150...

From time to time, I have seen ads offering hollow point tools in various mags. American Rifleman comes to mind. Seems like anybody moderately handy could rig up a fixture that would accomplish the task? I have doubts that a flat nose 22 would be effective, or that a home made hollow point would expand at rimfire velocity? But, as a project for somebody with idle time on their hands, go for it.

I made my own tool to give the 22LR solids a flat nose out of a large bolt. I cut it to my desired length then drilled the section to hold the 22 LR ammo at my chosen length. It's a simple matter to file the nose flat once this is done. The bolt is tough enough that the file doesn't cut it. Be careful with the lead shavings.
You do notice a definite difference when the modified flat nosed bullet strikes a varmint.

Yes, of course. A drill of the proper diameter, a piece of steel, and if you are lucky, a lathe or a drill press. Since I've never tried it, I'm surprised to learn that the terminal effect is noteworthy? I guess I was thinking of feeding and chambering in my Buckmark, but hand feeding in a bolt action is an option I somehow overlooked? Maybe we can dress it up, something exotic like a dum dum, file an X in the tip?

The modified bullets fed well in all of my semi auto rifles, Ruger 10/22s, Marlin 70PSS and Remington Nylon 66.
The modified bullet had a much bigger meplat, which can transfer more energy on impact.
"As most will guess, the shape of the meplat (tip) has a great effect on external ballistics (how the projectile flies through the air). The shape can also have an effect on terminal ballistics and performance with regard to projectile energy transfer on game, projectile expansion and stress to the projectile during this rapid change in medium. Put simply, a wide flat meplat projectile has far greater potential to transfer its energy immedietly upon impact than a sleek pointed projectile when bullet construction of both designs is equal."
