Addressing wheel guns. Some kind of concealable 357, Detective whatever? Is a model with a covered hammer a better choice? I kind of like to shoot with the hammer cocked once in a while, like when testing hand loads. I suppose something like a M36 or equiv. in stainless, the hammer can be bobbed, but I'm not fond of the looks of the ones that have a hammer shroud, whatever it's called?

So, barrel, the shorter the better 2" or shorter, fixed sights, no sights?

Light weight, or heavy stainless with ejector shroud? Colt or Smith. I am not interested in a Taurus. What about a Bulldog? Ruger?

Good hunting. El Bee

Smith all the way and no exposed hammer.

The best I have seen for carry is the M&P 340, a scandium 357, Trijicon big dot front sight and no lock!

Best small shooter the 640-1 but good luck finding one.

Model 43c 22lr current production with no lock. Nearly identical to the 340pd. I run with this one as it weighs next to nothing even loaded.

640-1 357 mag older with no lock. Still in production but with the stupid lock.

Shield 9mm. Nice carry gun but the 640 is my favorite.

Over on another site the experts are bashing the S&W 357mag "J" frame. One of them says the recoil is brutal and painful 'about as bad on the shooter as it is on the intended target'. My only comment is "put some Pachmayr Decelerators on it and blast away". Hell you can practice with 38's and carry the mags when you want to. LB, the M640 is a bad boy, the only thing that I would replace mine with is M340 S&W Scandium revolver in 357 magnum.

I thought I was over revolvers till Mike handed me a 629 mountain gun. I bought one for myself and thought well just this one. Then he handed me his 640-1 and I searched for a few years till I found one, he's a bad influence.

And 357's aren't that bad in the SS 640, the scandium 357 might be a tad rough on the shooter but for it's intended purpose, it'll do...

You guys know what you are talking about, but you are using different terms, descriptions and model numbers. Without a program, I am having a hard time putting specific comments with specific guns. In other words, I am getting confused. Which is not to say I don't value the input, I do. But.

Would it be too much trouble to go back and edit? Just call them guns A B and C.

example:

A)
And 357's aren't that bad in the SS 640,

B)
the scandium 357 might be a tad rough on the shooter

Tom the banker lady up the road has one also. She shot one of my 442's (38spl) and thought it kicked too much because of the lite weight (aluminum frame/steel barrel & cylinder). She asked me about the other one, so I tell her it's a 357 mag and probably a little too much for a lady. "Shoot I'm a country girl and magnums sounds cool". She shot it w/ mags in it & had me order her one! Honest... & she keeps it close to her 24/7 for over a dozen years.

LB,
The Model 640-1 is the 5 shot 38spl/357 Magnum "J" Frame Revolver in Stainless Steel. Not all are chambered in 357 mag. Early on the M640, no dash was only available in 38 spl. When they (S&W) introduced the M640 in 357 Magnum, they named it the 640-1 to avoid confusion when dealers ordered by part numbers. To my knowledge, S&W still offers the plain ole M640 in 38spl(only). Another point that you should know from our pics of the 640-1's is both of our revolvers has been disassembled and "Bead Blasted" by us to remove the shiny factory finish.

LB, when you get the time google smith-Wesson.com. In the top left hand corner click on HANDGUNS, scroll down to Revolvers, them click on SMALL FRAME (J). there is 3 pages of the various J frame's available. Currently all of the J frames in 357magnum are in Stainless Steel and Scandium (smiths ultra lite/space age material). They even offer a M60 357 mag w/ an exposed hammer on page 1.

Tried to get some phone pics on here but gave up.
LB you said you had a Red Hawk 44 mag. What's wrong with that unless you are after a carry gun?I have one, goes 'bang' every time and it will kill a bear I know.
Mike early on mentioned a mod 92 Beretta 9mm.I also have that and can't imagine a better shooting 9.
I have Luger Rugers,a Walther 380 etc for my wife but anyone unwelcome in my place will see the Red Hawk and the 92.Can't imagine needing anything else.
For anything.

My RedHawk has a 7 1/2" barrel, not the handiest piece for home defense. I suppose the sound would scare someone to death?

I have it on record, straight from the home invader's mouth, long barreled, large bore revolvers get their attention.

I just bought a 1977 Smith & Wesson Model 19, high polish blue. 357 mag. 4 inch. I love this gun. weight is right, size perfect, versatile cartridge. ACCURATE. I also have 1911, ruger 101, smith airweight 38 special, etc.

No, I'm dealing with sensory overload. Too many damned choices. And, I don't have a clear objective. One problem is, the wheel guns that appeal to me cost an arm and a leg! The only thing I can say at this point is; I have zero interest in a Glock. Not sure why?
