Yeah, ....... Ha Ha. Air rifles have come a long ways since then. .50 pre-charged pnunamatics (sp?) that they hunt feral pigs with in Germany and such stuff.
And ............. keep in mind that the mechanics of an accurate shot are the same with an air rifle / pistol or a 'real' gun.
I have a pan lid set up as a gong for a pellet pistol target @ 40 yards from my patio to ding while I'm bbq-ing. ![[Cool]](cool.gif)

Watched a guy shoot coyote with his air rifle, the shot was off and thus he crippled the coyote, if had a rifle he could of finished it but air gun to slow to reload and thus cripple hobbled off. No thanks.

First of all, speaking of Germany and shooting boars. It;s because they have no other choice. In spite of an article I recently read in American Hunter or Guns and Ammo. They have a driven shoot ONCE A YEAR, where they shoot anything that runs by, from deer to rabbits to fox. Then they have a stupid memorial dedicated to the prey. Besides the fact that the hunting license is extremely difficult to get unless you might be a prince, as was the host of this grand celebration.
We had a dude on here for a while that used air rifles, I believe 25 caliber? Anyway, one time he mentioned the hassle of tracking the coyote after the shot. I had a feeling he was getting a bit discouraged?
So, just for giggles, let’s talk about the advantages of air rifles versus firearms? I personally can’t think of any so go ahead, ko ko.

(1) I can get trigger time with air rifles & pistols off my patio while BBQing without the neighbors complaining.
(2) It's fun. If we forget fun, we become dull. When we become dull we become stagnant. Stagnant is like a rut and the only difference between a rut and a grave is it's length. Remember to have fun !!!

Yes and bicycles are fun too, but how practical are they in weather or snow or a monsoon?
I’m assuming that you are afraid to dispatch astray rodent or viper with a “gun”?

My bicycle, an old Schwinn Sierra Mountain bike has it's place. Gated 'No Motorized Vehicles' roads come to mind, of which Calif. has miles of. I've hunted deer & feral pig out of camps I've reached with mine. I need to get my ever widening ass back on the bike more.............. Keeps me trim & spry !!!
As far as rodents & vipers, I'm rural enough that the neighbors wouldn't care about a gunshot if there was a reason. I just can't think of one; The cats are in charge of rodents & the snake hook is used to flip rattlers into an empty trashcan to be relocated back out in the sand wash far away from the house.

I had a week moment this winter. I was over at a buddies house in the shop. He was putting together two of these electric trikes. you can either pedal it or run off electric power. I thought these would work well for night calling and getting around on gravel roads, less noise and less to hide. They had enough room and baskets for most of my gear as well. Or you could add another seat for a buddy. But then short time later his wife shows up and opens the garage door and lets all the cold into the shop. Brrrrrrrrr. forget that idea. LOL

Along the same lines, we once had a man with a wild idea up in northern Nevada, and specifically on a specific highway dead winter and sub zero temperatures, all downhill for 40 miles. HE was trying to multiply their stands by leaving his partners in the truck making stands while he took off with a portable light and a rifle and A SKATEBOARD! Everything has to go perfectly, which it didn’t, and he crashed and had a long wait for his partners to pick him up, tired, cold and bruised, and with a damaged scope, for good measure. Takes balls to come up with shit like that!

I don't know anything about dieseling air guns but car engines it's not a good thing to happen. Anyways, I have a couple sets of airgun sillywets and they are fun to shoot at in the garage or out back. Keeps the ol pistol eye kinda sorta sharp. And that ancient 717 Daisy still shoots pretty straight ,even with my trembling hands and feeble mind behind the wheel. Airguns both rifle and pistol are just fun and cheap to shoot and everyone knows that the more lead downrange the better you supposedly get. I have watched a couple shows on the idiot scope of guys shooting medium game with large bore overpriced airguns and it seems that in the hands of a capable shooter and some luck they work ok. I still like the sound of thunder from a rifle or pistol that goes bang though!

Leonard you should try skateboarding or even, more fun to me, landluge boards on a twisty turny hill. Good extreme sport that stuff and a bit more exciting than banging steel at times.

Dieseling an air rifle involves putting a drop of oil in the base of a pellet and shooting is out of a break-barrel rifle. When fired, the compressed air ignites the oil and gives an extra push. Said by some to be hard on the rifle. I have a thrift store pan lid for a gong 40 yards from my patio. The difference is 'bong' or 'BONG'.

I can skateboard, although I haven’t in a while, one of my kids stole it, thinking I did not need it any more? Or probably to protect me from ever trying it, again. I had a garage sale a few years ago and sold about a 4 foot LONG BOARD, that my son had made out of a stash I had of very pricy Honduran Mahogany. I was kinda pissed off that he didn’t ask, but sold it without his permission, ha ha. Why do we save stuff? On a shelf in the garage I have a whole case of original 8 ounce Coke a Cola, that my wife bought as an investment, Does that stuff last forever> IDK?
Just clearing and sorting my various junk would be a chore. I do have a little fear that my reloading stuff will be hauled away for junk, and much of it is precision stuff and cost money. I haven’t been to the range i think in 3 years, either the creek is too high or something else? What those assholes need to do is build a fucking bridge! It’s way past time for that, and now I don’t have a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle, just an “all wheel drive” SUV. I don’t think I would want to try it.

Just did a test sorta kinda, Took the 717 airpistol and an oiled, with oil out of a syringe with needle I use on model trains, pellet and didn't expect to see anything and I didn't. Then I took a 20 dollar Chinese trainer air rifle and tried it all over again. Do believe neither one had enough poop to them as nothing happened. THEN I got out a Winchester high velocity break action and did the oil in the pellet deal and got nothing but a diesel smelling puff of smoke. But no trailing wisp of smoke from the pellet. Will set up a couple little steel seillywet rams and try it out again and attempt to hear any difference on a hit. And maybe the light conditions weren't right to notice a trail. HMMM .What you don't do when retired to kill some precious time.

I'm reading up on Google that the oil trick is really hard on the seals. Since my Gamo is an old beater, I'm not too worried about it. When shooting, it's hard to tell the difference. It's the sound of hitting harder that tells the story. Try hanging Thrift Shop pan lids for gongs. Good fun. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

“Boys”, please do not take this the wrong way.
You can have your pellet and BB guns and snooty air rifles. I have zero interest. Remember when I had a burglary and lost my super accurate 25’06Ackley? Well, in that haul, they got my Colt Combat Commander 45ACP, and a 6mmRem Model 660. They also got a Crossman pellet rifle I seem to think it was a model 360? IT WAS NOT MINE! I bought it for my son, when he was about 7 or 8 or so.
I had a BB gun when I was that age. All the rest of the kids had a lever action that held about 500 BB’s but I had a pump, and you could pump it more than once if you liked. I’m pretty sure it was more powerful than the little boys with their Red Ryder’s.
Thereafter, my first firearm was a 410 shotgun, I didn’t get a 22 until I was a teenager. We lived in the city anyways and riding around on my bike with a real “gun” was a bit frowned upon. I could only use my shotgun on trips to Mankato to hunt the corn on relatives land, only pheasants, & all the squirrels lived in Minneapolis.
I left airguns behind very early, never had much interest, I sort of viewed them as kids toys. I understand my concept might not be correct, but there it is.
Good hunting. El Bee
edit: I might remind the Peanut Gallery that from that 1975 burglary, the only item I ever saw again was/is my Combat Commander! Ten years later, it was returned to me. I wonder who or how many of y’all have got a gun back that was stolen off of the National Regestry? I have a Charter arms 38 Special that is still out there somewhere? But, I get the idea that few are ever turned up? Who has a story? [ March 27, 2026, 07:58 AM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

Today's air rifles are anything but 'toys' and even the 'Red Ryders' should never be considered as such. I get a great deal of enjoyment out of my patio bbq / airgun shooting sessions but they are treated with every safety protocol that 'real' firearms are. Anything less is unacceptable.

I could get all philosophical on you but like one of my bosses once told me"Spare me the details." But drinking beers and etc when I lived in Ruth we would sit out on the porch and use those Red Ryders, have a couple, and shoot the fly's that landed in the rail below the hummer feeders. Great fun to do if you consider also I was the middle of Main St. LOL. I really was a hoot especially after a few. Still prefer powder burners over air.

Walt, I have been to Ruth! For some reason I always thought you were located on the west side around Carson City. My mistake.
All of you can entertain yourselves to a fair thee well, with pellet guns and air rifles. I still have zero interest. I even tend to discount 22’s as legitimate firearms. That comment will cause scorn, I’m sure but I am expressing my opinion, as we all do, on occasion.
No, I can’t apologize for my interest in high performance rifles. That’s where it’s at, and I don’t care much for lesser stuff.
So, as to my question: has anybody had a gun stolen and have you got in back, other than a week later when. some hophead tried to pawn it? Any stories, al all?
One thing I wanted to mention is that I had my rifles in a quaint rifle cabinet with glass sliding doors and a little chrome lock like you see at the drug store. Proudly, and innocently, right in my living room it displayed prominently everything I owned. An innocent age, it was. I still have that rifle cabinet up in my den, but the only thing in it is old shot out barrels; and some random indian findings.
Good hunting. El Bee

Totally understand. To each, their own. With me, they're cheap entertainment during patio time and can be a challenge. Shooting off hand or shooting from the weak side (or the hip) stuff I wouldn't even think of trying with expensive ammo.

I guess it depends where you live and how close you keep your guns when you travel. never had one stolen. Can't get ammo from most of them anyway maybe that's why. Its also kind of cool I don't have to stuff my truck keys in my pocket every time I leave it parked. You can keep Cali/ Az. and also those other southern places. "Can't get ammo for them ..........."
In this twisted world that we live in, I could see some dirtbag stealing your rifle, using ammo that sounds 'close', blowing the rifle up and then sueing you for damages.
Yeah ............. Tell me it couldn't happen.
