I just got notified this week that I was selected as the Kansas Hunter Education Instructor of the Year. The winner has received a firearm each year, and I was lucky enough to win the award the year they picked a varmint rifle as the award.
I am getting a CZ 527 Varmint rifle in .223. It is the laminated stock version, 24” bbl., Mini Mauser action with controlled round feed, 1-9” twist, and a 4X12 Vortex scope—looks like a pretty neat package. The only thing that looks a little goofy is that the two-position safety looks to be ‘backwards’—forward for safe, pull to the rear to fire.
I have absolutely no experience with CZ rifles—anyone here have one?

I have that rifle in .204. It's my scabbard rifle. It shoots very well and is a handy little rifle. I hate the set trigger, but am going to order a rifle Basix to fix that. Other than that no major flaws.

I've got a CZ rimfire with that backwards safety. I didn't find it hard to get used to, but it did take "some" getting used to. And I don't shoot it much, so every time I do, it takes a little getting used to again.
Really hasn't been an issue though.

The only one I have handled is Vic's, and I don't know for sure the model #? In fact I think it's a Calhoon based on a CZ action. But, it's very nice, I would buy one.
Good hunting. El Bee
edit: I'm not crazy about the magazine feature, but I guess one could get used to it, like the safety. [ March 15, 2014, 10:13 AM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

No need to replace the trigger on a CZ UNLESS they have changed something in the new ones. To deactivate the set trigger you just back out the screw that adjusts the set weight. I have more than one and have adjusted several. Sear engagement, overtravel & weight of pull are all separate adjustments. I honestly don't think there is a better trigger installed in a factory rifle! And from what I own and have shot their center fire caliber barrels are as good or better than any factory barrel made period. I haven't had a new production CZ in my hands for a couple of years so things might have changed, if not don't knock em till you shoot one or take one apart. As for the backwards safety, I agree its pure 1917 Eddystone/REM/wIN copy.

Tim,
Congratulations on the award. As to the CZ, you'll like it trust me. I've got a 527 American in 204, think I'll go dust some sage rats tomorrow. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) [ March 15, 2014, 01:58 PM: Message edited by: Dave Allen ]

I'd like to add, I'm with Mike's post totally. I deactivated my set trigger also.
Never have checked the trigger pull weight, feels really good, so I never bothered.

Well thanks for the trigger info. As with many things....
I did not know that.

When adjusting the 527 trigger W/ set option I was never satisfied with the adjustments until I deactivated the set option. Not trying to say it is a must do, but for me I could always feel a slight interference. Same thing on the 550 series CZ's. A crisp 2.5lb trigger pull can be done safely that as for me can't be beat. I'm not sure if a lighter SAFE pull can be achieved without changing springs and or removing sear material but about any decent gunsmith shouldn't charge too much to tune one up.

I've got a half dozen or so of them. Vic's was mine originally before he bought it from Don. As prune picker says, the trigger is very adjustable, and able to deactivate the set part if that's what you want.
I try to think of the safety like the hammer on a pistol, pull back to fire. The magazine is another non issue for me. Lots of guys are putting detachable magazines on Rems and such, especially the tactical shooters.
One thing I didn't like is that you can not open the bolt with the safety on. So you can't unload it with the safety on. There is a little piece of metal that sticks into the bolt handle, that is what stops the bolt from opening. That piece can be removed and then with a bench grinder the little tit or protrusion can be ground away and then the piece re-installed, about a 5 minute job.
The bolt is really easy to disassemble for cleaning, and the inline magazine makes feeding pretty nice, especially if you shoot wildcat cartridges.
I have never had a bad shooter in over a dozen. [ March 15, 2014, 06:07 PM: Message edited by: DanS ]

Tim, congrats on the award. I have three of the little beasties, a 221 and 2-204's. One of the 204's is gonna get a work over one these days. I thought the backwards safety would be an issue after having shot Remington's for years. Not! The 221 is a blast on the neighbors dog town. Enjoy!
