Just a heads up on a good company to do business with..
Magnum research is located in MN. they make some pretty big hand cannons along with 22 rifles for target or hunting..
I bought a 10/22 clone from them a few years ago chambered in 17 HMR which turned out to be a fine shooting rifle and I had no issues with it at the time... Later on there was a issue with some of the ammo not being safe to shoot in a semi auto, which wasn't there fault but they offered a free replacement barrel chambered in 22 mag. rather than recalling the gun and scraping it..
I hunted coon one full season with the 22 mag. barrel (fired close to 800 rounds) and the gun shot most brands of ammo very well and I also had no issue with the rifle itself till this spring when a small piece of metal broke off of the end of the charging knob which was used as a lock to hold the handle in place...
I finally got around to calling them today to order a new charging handle and spring and to find out how much to send them for the replacement..
The tech. guy on the other end of the phone took down my address and said "no charge" and they would be sending me a new handle, spring, and bolt assembly. Talk about great service on a gun that the warranty ran out on 3 years ago.
Making plans to buy a 10/22 clone chambered in 22 l.r. from them this summer for my son to use....

I've never owned any of their firearms, but have heard really great reviews on the rimfire rifles. One of my dream pistols is a Desert Eagle in .357 or .44 Mag. Someday....

On the 17hmr problem; did I just dream it or did Winchester start making their own cases a little thicker for use in autos?

Seems like all the other brass was made by one company, maybe aguilla?

I heard somewhere that CCI manufactured all of the .17 HMR ammo?

Not sure who makes the brass, but Rem. and Win. both have been making there own 22 mag. ammo for years. I know when checking varies brands of ammo for best groups they all pretty much shoot to the same point of aim and same size groups so who knows..
Yes there was word going around that Win. was going to come out with better brass for the 17 HMR, but instead they just came out with a new rim fire round using the brass for those nail guns.. I asked the service tech. at magnum research about the 17 HMR and he said its pretty much done with as far as a semi-auto is concerned.
Valquartison stills chambers a semi-auto similar to what I have but you are still taking a chance with there rifle as well...
The 17 HMR ammo is still safe in the bolt guns so I may go this route later on...

Edit to add: If you go to a few places and compare prices I'd say the manufactures selling the cheaper ammo most likely make there own brass..

AR Shaw has one of those fancy Valquartison 17's. Wonder what he thinks of it? I suspect it's more or less a close range cat gun?

But, speaking of the 22Mag. The price of non reloadable ammo has always steered me away. Wouldn't a 218Bee or a Hornet be a reasonable choice?

Good hunting. El Bee

Yes CCI was/is still the MFG of all 17hmr, no matter the "brand" was stamped on it.

Yes Leonard Randy has one. Randy recommended it pretty highly but I found that the Magnum research was just as good and a little less money so I went that route instead. No complaints so far.
Yes the magnum ammo is a little high in price but when the coon prices are up I can over look it..
The cartridges you mentioned are just a little too much over-kill IMO and I don't think anyone makes a semi-auto chambered for one which is a big negative.

Edit to add: I just finished up one of my 12" gongs today and will do a 6" gong tomorrow.
(Have it primed and will paint later)

Finished up on the other gong and got both painted up. Was just going to use black axle grease to coat the surface but since I'll bring them home each day when done I decided to paint them. I use two different size PVC couplers for painting the orange centers and will just throw them in my range bag with orange and white paint for after shooting touch ups.

Magnum research told me it would take one week for the parts to get back to me and they was spot on..

I got the rifle broken down ( pulled the barrel and action bolt and stripped down) and replaced the parts and gave the rifle a good cleaning as well and lubed what needed to be lubed..

Here is the action put back together with new parts and also the old broken part included at top of pic.

New part with a heavier spring.
