Need some of your experience, guys. I recently became a brand new .22 Hornet owner and need some load advice. Main use will be short range prairie dogs and jackrabbits. Barrel is a .224" 1:14 twist. Any decent bullet/powder/primer combos to start out with? Thanks for any input.

I like the hornet, have had several of them, including the Ackley version. I ended up using the sierra 40 grain bullet, little round nose, on top of AA 1680 powder and sparked with a winchester small pistol primer. This load killed a lot of coyotes for me in a couple of different rifles.

Thanks Az.
p.s. Oh come on, Tim. I expected a reply stating "I have a shitload of info on the Hornet, but you'll have to figure it out on your own. I'm going to keep it secret for the time being."

What AZ hunter said, Accurate 1680 with a small pistol primer has worked the best in 3 different rifles. A CZ, H&R single shot & Anchutz. I never tried the small pistol primer in extreme cold weather but from 20* on up it improved the group size a bunch. If you can't find AA1680, WW296 was next best for me. Have fun with your new rifle.

Yeah I got some load info on the little cartridge in a rifle with the .223 bore and .224 bore.. Vic pretty well covered it and if you look in a few good loading manuals they also have what you seek..No secretes, sorry.. As for Bucks/Bears I thought I would give him a chance to help out. It seems he posts on a handfull of sites, thing is he don't know anything other than how to be a smart ass.
But I also have to agree with Chad and just shit can the idea but get a 221 F.B. instead of messing with the hornet.. Much better cartridge to work with IMO..

ol hole huffer Kirby has got more knowledge about coyote behavior than you'll EVER have. you see Tim, its quite apparent to me and everyone that has followed your ramblings that you "think" you know it all. if you don't like someone (for any reason) you will try to belittle them in ANYWAY you can. you always have and always will. you best start buying off your pall bearers as they may be hard to find for free.
edited again. about 10-12 p.m.'s have come my way about you Tim. funny thing is, not ONE posts on this site (just watchers)and it's because of YOU. i'm sure you've mucked up their post/stories in the past. you JUST CAN'T HELP IT!! if Leonard banned your ass (and yes, you kiss LB's ass very well i'm quite sure others would join and some DAMN GOOD members that are already here would post more often. however i will say: some come here just to read the stupid shit you say so i quess you are good for this site in that respect i miss JD

I think some of the other members can bring you up to speed on Old hole huffer Kerby if they choose to..LOL

My secret's out. I keep TA here because he kisses my ass?
You know what? That's a fucking insult, Amigo. I don't do anything here because somebody/anybody kisses my ass.
And, if your networking buddies are afraid to post here because of that jerk, well, they can't be of much value to any man here. Let's get real.

"Yeah Rich you're right if I'm calling Coyotes I leave the 17 Ackley Hornet home, in favor of my 17 Tactical which in a Coyote killin Son of a Bitch." ---------------------------- I was just johing ya UT. I don't give a hoot what guys choose to shoot coyotes with.
Speaking of coyote killers, I have been thinking about all of the ramblngs regarding shotguns, chokes and large shot. I can remember seeing a couple of coyotes fall to a dense load of #4 Birdshot, and I have seen some scary dense patterns from #4 Birdshot at 40 yards. Maybe, just maybe we don't really need those 3&1/2" Boomers and hevi-shot T's or lead #4 BUCK. At least MOST of the time anyways.

Mert Bargenquast,
I remember you, your real name is Myrtle, right? I shot one of your .22 Hornets one day remember? It was a good shooter at the ranges it was intended for. Too bad the factory version has such a wimpy shoulder. A good Smith could probably help that neck problem with an Ackley reamer dontcha think?
