How come every time someone starts a Remington thread (recently not here), a Savage proponent has to come on and tell us how Remington sucks and Savage is the best?

Now I have nothing against Savage rifles, and I almost bought one this year for my son for Christmas. But honestly, I don't ever see any Remington folks go on Savage threads and put them down.

It gets old...

As Savage shooter, I'll take a shot at this.

Remington has, for a long time, been a main stay in the shooting and rifle business as far as factory guns go. Combine that with the fall from grace that Savage suffered a few years back and their subsequent resurrection to a quality gun once again, I think that a lot of Savage shooters think they have to hijack things to ensure that the Savage name gets mentioned time and again. Not at all unlike Ford v. Chevy (until the government took over GM) or the rivalry that exists between two guys who each support their own favorite college football team.

In the end, to me it makes no difference. Both Savage and Remington, as well as a litany of other manufacturers, produce quality out of the box guns. Survival would be hard for them in today's market if they didn't produce a good product. Savage is reputed to be regarded as the best out of the box rifle for accuracy/ price available today. At the same time, everyone I know that shoots what I consider to be a truly quality gun that is consistently accurate has tweaked their gun and changed out factory for after-market components somewhere because every one of the guns on the shelf can use some adjusting ot get them coyote-calling accurate.

Thus, I guess my point is that no Remington or Savage is best, in their original form. They only get that way after the owner takes the time to make them a mostly-Remington or mostly-Savage and has shot them enough to have found ammo they eat well. At that point, the quality of the gun is as much a reflection of the shooter's skill as it is the lineage of the gun.

Interesting point Cdog. So in essence, you are saying Savage shooters feel they have something to prove?

I agree, both manufacturers make quality rifles.

Different strokes for different folks...

They both suck.

Fortunately Remington made a run of synthetic stocked mountain rifles or I wouldn't have the three I've got now. And yes they have been bedded and I adjusted the triggers.

Out of the box? What fun is that?

My guns are all box stock, except maybe for a camo HS Precision stock I threw on one of my tactical rifles that started out as a VLS.

Boring I know.

The tactical rifles have not had the triggers tuned but will group consistently into 3/4" with the old M118 match ammo. Not too shabby for $600 guns.

I like Remington, but they have made the mistake of trying to sell their cheaper models by sacrificing quality. I have an ADL here that has a cheap synthetic stock. I had to build a pressure point in barrel channel in order to get "hunting" accuracy out of that rifle. Now my 700 CDL shoots nice tight groups just as it came from the factory. I did adjust the trigger pull though. As for Savage, I know that they shoot well but I simply don't like them. I am an old codger who believes that the last GOOD rifle made by Savage was their model 99, and the dumb arses discontinued em. Discontinue your very best rifle? GEEZE [Confused]

Yeah, all the stories we have been hearing about quality control problems almost reinforce my long held opinion that you can't go far wrong with a well used Model 722, 725 or an early Model 700. Makes an excellent platform for an accuracy piece, with a little work.

Good hunting. LB

PS be darned, someone else likes the Model 99? Again, the older ones have quite an appeal for me.

Why does everyone discontinue things that work? Remington produced these as special runs for Gander mountain and Cabelas to use up the Ti stocks since they screwed that one up as well.

These guns weigh 7 pounds and maybe an ounce or 2 as shown, balance perfectly and shoot under MOA, way under MOA...

Nice looking stocks/guns Tom.

As I am getting older, I am learning to appreciate light weight guns more and more.

Tom,

What is the muzzle diameter of those rifles pictured. I'm assuming 22" barrels?

Thanks

General mountain rifle contour .550" and yes 22".

I bedded the lugs and full length bedded the barrels. I started with my first 22-250 by just bedding the lug and floating the barrel. It shot okay but I was told to try bedding the light contoured barrels. I did and groups shrank considerably. These 3 got the same treatment right out of the box. The SS 7-08 is the worst shooter with 3 shot groups doing .750-1" though I've only tried one load for it. The 22-250 still amazes me although 3 shot groups don't tell much, dead critters do.
