Went to the Mule deer foundation banquet last night. A buddy had a free ticket since his wife didn't want to attend. I rarely buy into all these foundations anymore because I'm always a little suspicious of where the money goes. Kind of like televangelists. Anyway as a looked around at all the things they wanted you to buy a ticket for a chance to win, only one thing garnered much interest. It was a table having a few prizes, with the grand prize being a custom 7mm from Cloud Peak Gunworks. They build the rifles for "Best of the West" tv show. Anyhow, A Remington action (trued, blueprinted) Broughton 5C 27" barrel, custom trigger, HS aluminum bedded stock, 1 piece Tally rings, a Luepold VX3 4.5 to 14 with a custom engraved bullet drop compensator and many other little details too numerous to mention. And the Grand prize winnner was....... me! Lucky Bastard.

Hot damn! You can't beat that. I'm a sucker for gun raffles, but I've never had any luck winning. We used to always go to the RMEF banquets and one year the guys sitting on both sides of my wife and I won rifles while we won two new car tires(yeah, car tires).
Not exactly a brush gun, but that should be pretty nice for your wide open spaces. Post a pic when you get it.

Well, the rich keep on getting richer! I bet you have rifles stacked in every closet in the house?
My jealousy must be showing? I have won just two long guns in my entire lifetime, but not all tricked out, scope mounted, etc. Just don't sell it as surplus. That will bring ten years of bad luck.
Don't ask how I know.

Dang Cal,
It would be a shame to take such a nice rifle out into your nasty weather.
Why don't you send it down here to me for safe keeping, where you don't have to worry about it getting caught out in the rain and snow ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

It's supposed to be weather proof Tim. Synthetic stock, and stainless steel. But if I see it starting to rust I'll send it your way!
But since you commented, you're a long range 7mm shooter aren't you? This one has a 1 in 9 twist and is set up to shoot the 160 to 180 grn bullets. The guy that built it said he has alot of load data, but out of curiosity, what are some of your secret recipies?

Cal,
The best that I ever tried, was the 162 Amax, but the 180 Bergers were a close second. I think that I loaded them with 4831SC but I've not been able to find my reloading papers since we "Cleaned the house" a couple of weeks ago. I set the bullet out to .002 into the lands. When choosing a powder, I try to find a burn rate that will let me fill the case to close to the shoulder, while giving me top speed and little or no over pressure signs.
Sorry Leonard, but that wasn't me. I took a 30 cal to the meets. Are you ever going to get up the nerve to shoot at 1,000 yards? Let me know if you ever get brave, I've not shot for over a year, but I bet I could still work up some loads and not embarrass myself.

Tim, if I ever make it out there again, I would like to time it when your going to shoot and see that done. Ive never shot over 600 yards. Ive always wanted to, but dont have a place to do it and dont have the knowledge to do it right.
I thought 600 yards was a long shot. Then I get on here and find out that some people to be left nameless, TA, shoots running coyotes at that range with a 17 Pred., offhand on a regular basis. Makes me feel bad. ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

Tim, The guy that built the gun recomended the 180 Bergers and the 168 Bergers with Retumbo. He claims that I should be able to get close to 3000 fps with the 180 and almost 3100 with the 168 with this barrel. Supposidly the Broughton 5C barrel will let me get these velocities for some reason. Note that these are his claims not mine. These velocities are way beyond anything in any book I can find. But until I get to play with it I won't know. I went to all 3 of the local gunshops today and found exactly zero 7mm Mag brass. I bought the last 50 Midway had, and found another 50 at Bruno. So I get to pay about 8 bucks extra shipping to get it from two places. Midway was also out of the 168 and 180 Bergers, but we have a gunsmith here that is a Berger dealer and he had some so I got a box of each. I wish we had some ranges around here that had 1000 yard shoots. I don't know if I could do any good, but it sure would be fun to try.

Cal,
I buy the 4831SC, Retumbo and H1000 by the 8 pound jugs.
Be careful, shooting long range is not only expensive, it's pretty addictive as well....
With that rifle and a little practice, you will soon be picking off jack rabbits half a mile away. Consistently ! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Thanks for the info TA, but I got a hundred on the way so that will do for now. I never liked the nickel stuff much. Too brittle and the necks don't last long.
TB, I know what you mean. Anything to do with rifle shootng attracts me. Thankfully there isn't much like that going on up here. Alot of trap shooting and sporting clays, but I never got into that too much. I shot league trap one year, won my class shooting a feild gun (vs the coal miners and perazzis, etc.) and quit!

Well, for sure, you don't want to mix different lots of brass!
Ugh on the nickle brass. The only application I can see for it is for long term storage, close to salt water where you have no desire to trim necks or even reload the cases. Nicle brass is a terrible choice for handloaders, but makes a lot of sense in Minneesota, of course.
Good hunting. LB

LOL Leonard. I did some looking around and the brass is in short supply at the moument so some may have to make do with the nickel brass. There is still some of it around yet. I also saw there was no shortage of 17 rem. brass.. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Congrat's on the win!
I have a habit of giving away the winning ticket/spot. Two stories that come to mind:
A few years ago at a Friends of the NRA banquet I was in line to buy a chance on the only one of about 50 guns they were raffling off that really interested me - a top of the line Sako 75 in my caliber of choice topped with a 4.5-14 VXIII, etc....
The line was kind of a sloppy arrangement and at some point me and another guy had to choose who was next in line. Me, being the gracious sort that I am, told the guy to go ahead, especially considering that I never win anything anyway......
His was the winning ticket. To the guys' credit, when his number was drawn he stood up and offered the rifle to me being as I had allowed him that place in line. I've always wondered what he would have said if I had said "I'll take it!"
Back in my younger days a local college was having a dance and giving away a trip for two to Mardis Gras, the only catch being that you could only take what you carried in and if you won you were immediately put in a limo for the two hour drive to the airport.
When in line to pay my cover charge two fine young ladies were flirting and jokingly cut in line in front of me - that being completely to my liking, especially considering that the more flirtatious of the two was also the better looking of the pair. The way things were progressing I was pretty much thinking that I was going to get all the show I needed w/o the beads....
Long story short, her buddy's ticket won - it would have/should have been mine... To this day I have memories of trying to exchange phone numbers with the flirtatious one as the "winner" pushed her in to the limo and slammed the door. Never saw her again......
I'm getting kind of pissy in my old age - cut in front of me today and look out! Maybe a conditioned response?

I kinda won a raffle one time, and the kinda part ruined a friendship.
A buddy I used to fish buddy bass tournaments with, and I, were at a banquet the night before a big benefit tournament. They had several raffles. One was for a $1000 rebate off a Mercury motor. It so happened I had just ordered a new boat with a Mercury on it. I had to leave for a little bit and gave him $10 to get me some tickets. I got back in time for the drawing and lo and behold, I won it. I went up and got my rebate. When I got back to the seat, he said he had bought $10 worth too and put my name on them to save time and thought we should split the rebate. I was pissed. Long story short, I ended up writing him a $500 check and thats the last time we spoke, let alone fished together.
Sad part is we fished good together. We won a little over $2000 the next day and didnt say 5 words to each other all day.

Belated congrats! what flavor is that 7 is it the standard belted nag. or stw. wudge you get? This may seem rudimentary, but what ever brass you use I'd especially pay attention to head spacing off the shoulder if it is a belted nag. I say nag cause thats what you'll get if you don't. Get some good hot loads down her throat to get your forms then size them for a cush fit and you'll have a lady that'll stroke your bore quite nicely.
I'd steer away from the nickle plated stuff its really springy and I found it springs back too much for a precise fit. But if that gun was reamed just under SAMMI spec. then that nickel brass may work just fine..
