Since the post above is covering caliber and some 17 balistics, I am curious as to your favorite rifle setup.

What I am trying to ask is, what is your ideal barrel length, stock design, bolt action, AR15, single shot, etc.?

A bolt action rifle, preferably CRF, tend to be what I'll generally grab with a barrel from 22-24" in length. I prefer walnut and steel over most sythetics and pot metal. I am warming up to the one McMillan stock I have. In general either my CZ 527 or a Rem 700 classic.

Oh yea, I like Tally Rings and 3x9x40 Leupold scopes.

I like the rem. actions or a clone of it. Prefer a McMillan stock over wood or any other material.
For style of stock i like the Sako hunter with a camo finish.
Barrels i like to be 24" or longer made by Lilja with a #5 contour..

Scope mounts i like the quick detach from Warne and also there solid bases..

I prefer a after market trigger on my remmy's, i have a couple different brands and like the one sold by Stiller.

Scopes canbe either a Leupold or a supersniper in var. 4-14X 6.5-20 or fixed 10 power..

I have had semi-auto's, pumps, single shots and bolt actions and prefer the bolt action over the others.

What a coincidence? I was just reading what you wrote over on the Blob board about barrel break in. Good solid advice.

I am very partial to the Model 700 platform, regardless of what you do with it from that point forward. I have one with such a low sn that it must come from the first year of mfg.? A great gun, too bad it's chambered in 308.

So, any flavor, the titanium model, mountain rifle, BDL, maybe a model Seven? But the hard part is the cartridge and the caliber.

I have also gravitated from wildcats, they really don't offer much, these days unless you just want something different, but it's hard to justify, strictly from a performance standpoint.

So, this is a coyote rifle, right? The first question is 22 or 24? I have killed so many coyotes with a 224 that I can't claim to need 244, with a straight face. You want specifics, I'd say 22-250 or 243Win. would do what needs doing. Beyond that, you can do a lot with bullet selection.

No exotics, just off the shelf. I am using a 700LVSF in 223Ackley as a daylight calling rifle. Seems to work fine, with a 55VMax. I think it's a big mistake to use light bullets in this caliber, but that's just my opinion?

Anyway, just one; that's my just one, but it's for daylights. I have a 220S Ruger 26" barrel that can do double duty, day and night. Does neither exceptionally well, but as a compromise, it might be hard to beat as a one gun arsenal.

Good hunting. LB

We aren't allowed to use artificial light for night hunting coyotes, so I have very little experiance with night hunting them. We don't get too many full moon nights with snow on the ground to help out either, may be all this global warming. OK, I just joking there.

I have a Vanguard in 223 Improved also. I hear they aren't supposed to shoot very well, but I managed to take a few animals with it at the campout last year. It feeds the improved case very well also. I used the 60 V-max. I'd probably use it for night hunting if I ever do it.

Good gawd Leonard; your savvy to obama and his shill game, your right thinking about the global warming hoax, but now I find out you buy into the "barrel breakin" bullshit?....Im floored.

I'm well aware of what you speak, Vic. Just think of it as good bore cleaning practice, and chill. E

Can we clean too much? If we do it properly?

To answer your question, I am not completely convinced, but it can't hurt neither.

Good hunting. LB

Again, your right oh omnipotent one....I kneel humbly at your rocker. If the silly process gets a guy to run a bore brush thru his barrel now and again, I guess it is a good thing.

I have a few AR's but my favorite calling rifle is a 16" Colt light weight barreled .223 with a Leupold 1.5-5 scope. I use an Aimpoint on this rig every now and then but the scope is more versitile.

That said, I am in the process of gathering up another bolt gun. I prefer lighter guns and probably will choose the 22-250. It will wear a synthetic stock and have a barrel no longer than 24" and most likely a Leupold 3.5-10 scope.

I like to use a rifle that is suited to the terrain I'm going to be hunting. In an area too sparse to use a shotgun, I like an AR-15 in 223. When the area is rather open and a long shot would be possible, I like a 243 AI in a little heavier configuration, and a higher magnification scope. I don't like to carry more weight than I need to. When hunting with people that want the pelt, I either use a 17-223 AR or a 17 Fireball bolt action with Berger bullets.

Its a carbon copy of the 17 MK4 cartridge which I used for years before Remington brought out their version. As to liking it, I do, but I also recognize it's limitations.

CrankyFarmer,

How are you liking that 6x47? I had a CZ 527 made up about ten years back with a 1-12 twist, just chambered a little short so I could use 223 brass. It's an accurite and fun rifle. Then decided to just go with a 6x45 in an AR

I absolutely LOVE my 6 x 47. It puts them down with authority but isn't quite as hard on the pelts as the 243 combined with less recoil and noise. It made me interested in building a 6 x 45 which is now complete.
