What would cause this: Group1: first two rounds at 100yds touching holes next two rounds low left by 3 and four inches respectivley. Group 2: first two rounds .5 inch third right by 3.5 inches fourth low by 3 + inches Group three: first round in the bull next three all over the paper Factory loads 40 gr. hornady slight wind straight in maybe 5mph and variable. Known scope of good quality burris signature series. Took it back to builder hes going to clean and lap the barrel. then bench test it.can a dirty barrel or a barrel not broken in cause this variance?

Doubtful? Those extreme spreads are usually not caused by your load, components or the barrel.
I'd look at the bedding and the scope. Several things to look at concerning bedding, including how you have the action screws tightened and stock pressure on the barrel itself. Mount another scope, and at the same time, check ring and mount screws.
Good luck, LB

No bedding issue its an ar platform the scope was mounted very firmly. The barrel was check and it was not loose. Im thinking the scope was okay as it grouped twice for two rounds at least. If the reticles were moving whats the chances of them going back to zero after moving from there.Im going to shoot my .223 wed. with the same scope and check it out anyway. Thanks Leonard pm

I had a similar issue once ... turned out I had loose rings and one loose base.

Among the things already listed, I would make sure your barrel is free of copper. Many of the 204s that I have owned have been finicky from tome to time and all that was needed to do was thoroughly clean the barrel. [ September 08, 2008, 08:59 PM: Message edited by: ARshooter ]

put a .17 Rem barrel on it and it will work just fine..
when my .17 jumps like that... it is usually a dirty barrel indicator...

It was just exactly that it shoots just fine now. I clean it about every 24 rounds.

Paul! Paul! Ever heard of cleaning intervals?
Cute sig line.
What's the difference between a frog w/lipstick and an *******? Okay, okay, sorry, I should clarify. I mean a real ugly *******, w/out lipstick. See, that's the difference: lipstick! Got it? Now, if you are a liberal Dem, you won't get it. Why, it's a complete mystery, just a common expression, right? I could go on; ever meet an honest Democrat w/lipstick? Nope, me neither.
Getting back to the prob. If your barrel is THAT rough that your bullets are flying all over the place....that's pretty bad. You could slug it, looking for a tight spot, or use some elbow greese and lap the hell out of it.
I mean, you expect a bench gun to need cleaning that frequently, (for cutting edge accuracy) but a field gun, that's almost worthless(ly) unreliable. We are talking a complete miss, with a dirty barrel.
I mean, let's say you go to Texas for a night hunt. Cripes! Rack em and stack em; you would be cleaning the friggin' bore before midnight!
Good hunting. LB

Leonard the barrel apparently had a bit of copper in it when I got it.Unbeknowenst to me. Gave it back to the builder and he cleaned it and its been fine since. He suggested that until it's well broken in I clean every couple of dozen rounds. On a good weekend in Az if I shoot 10 rounds I'm havin a blast. Its an AR platform Im trying to get comfortable with , they seem to be in favor by many, but try as I might I aint gettin it.I may be selling it before I ever get it finished. now before anyone goes postal I have nothing against the ar's or anyones choice of rifle it just aint working for me.This is my third one still own two ,fun, cool lookin, pretty accurate, love the pistol grip. but the balance thing is hard to get over.
