Does anyone have any Black powder rifle recommendations??? I want to purchase an entry level blackpowder rifle in the next couple of months and I was wondering if there were any decent rifles in the under $300 range. Are there options I should seek out/avoid. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Well, the options are probably "in line" or primitive. In one case, it's like making a silk purse from a sow's ear, but the black powder substitues have advantages, as does sabots and shotgun primers. Of course, the next step (logically) is smokeless.
In other words, if you intend to take advantage of favorable seasons for "black powder" with technology advancements, in line is probably the only way to go?
Get as primitive as you like with a matchlock. That should gain an appreciation of modern firearms.
Good hunting. LB

What are your going to use the gun for? There areseveral good primitive gun on the market if that`s what you want, and there is also several good inlines on the market if you`re just looking for some thing to extend your hunting season. I own a flint lock, a couple of precusions, and an inline. My longest shot on a deer with the flinter was abt. 175 yrds. With the inline I took one at 289 lazered. These shot are possible if you are willing to work up a drop chart and carry a range finder. If not round balls, flint and precusion, get tough past 125 yrds. and the inlines past 150 yrds.

First of all, I know goose egg about blackpowder firearms. I am looking to buy a blackpowder rifle as part of a raffle for the Memorial Hunt our club is hosting in Jan 09. We don't have a big budget and I was hoping to get some advice on the do's and dont's of purchasing a blackpowder rifle. I was thinking any of the inline rifles would be a good place to start. Are there options and features I should seek out or avoid? That is probably the real question I am hoping gets answered. [ May 15, 2008, 09:52 AM: Message edited by: Steve C ]

In that case, you don't have to live with it, so just look at the pictures in a Cabelas catalog and get the one that appeals to you.
Now, on the subject of the "Memorial" hunt. I knew Jim Struble, and had many squabbles with him at board meetings, etc. In my view, (and mindful of speaking well of the dead) he did some things that were good and he also did things that caused predator hunters in California to have a bad reputation; a man that could be very stubborn, while attracting unwanted attention to his methods, etc.
Well, I'm at least as cantankerous as he ever was (ask around) so maybe when I'm dead and gone, I will finally get the recognition I richly deserve! (just kidding)
Good hunting. LB
