Just got my copy of Precision shooting magazine. There was a extensive article on the 5/35 SMc.I wish Dave and Jack would come in on this one. By the way the c is supposed to be on top. I can't get it there.
The case, and reamers are patent protected. Now here comes the good part. The ballistic theory and analysis are protected by patent. The article said there will be no need for the 204, 223, now get ready for this one the 22-250 also.
They clamed 4,159 fps with a 40 gr bullet. The barrel is supposed to hold up for 4,000 rounds. It is supposed to generate about half the heat of the other three cartridges.
I am going to stop here and give you there website. I would like to hear some thoughts on this one, Because quite frankly I don't know what the hell to think. I do know my 204, 223, and especially my 22-250 that I built in 1968 are not going any where that I don't take them.
Forgot to mention Savage has already chamberd there Long range precision varminter in the 5/35 SMc

WTF? Is this the Second Coming?
I'm unimpressed (thus far) because I don't quite understand the concept and their animation that explains everything is under construction?
The assumption that the primer will strike at precise angles of the shoulder needs clarification; like with which primer, and how does the blast penitrate the powder granuales in the way? Did I miss something?
Yes, I'm sure Jack or Dave can put this stuff in terms we simple people can understand.
Good hunting. LB

Seems to be another cartridge out there where they claim the same performance as the 5/35 SMc. Here is the link:www.pdk20.com

Leonard...we are missing the boat buddy, in our retirement years, we ought to be dreaming up new innovative cartridges and making some money, rather than pissing off our time hunting with the ones we got:)

Vic. Just make sure you take out several patents on the 3MM X 78 wizzbang.
I think how many patents it has is the next rage.

Ronnie,
This is old news... McPherson and Smalley wrote several very long articles going into painstaking detail on all the design theory and parameters quite some time ago. I'm wanting to say four years ago? Smalley lives just north of me, a local guy sat next to me at the range doing load/chrono/accuracy testing with this cartridge several years ago. I had been shooting the .20BR for a couple of years already at that point. From what I could see, the SMc cartridge wasn't doing anything, or at best doing very little, that the .20BR had not already been doing for ten years. The data McPherson has published does show a small performance increase over the .20BR, and it may well be real, but it is also definitely not much of an increase, for the hassle involved.
I think it actually is a pretty neat cartridge. But, so is the .20BR, which essentially matches the SMc, without having to deal with all the "patent" crap and the magnum shell holder/bolt face etc.
Have to admit, I actually got bored with my .20BR a couple of years ago and pulled the barrel off it and replaced it with another good old .22BR (of which I now have three). In my experience the .22 version is a better all around cartridge for what I use it for.

If Dave don't get it, case closed! I need to cancel my order and go pull my seventeen out of the trash can. All in all, I'm a little disappointed, I really wanted to hunt coyotes with all those patents to back me up, confidence wise. I think I will concentrate my efforts on caseless ammo and electronic ignition....
what? it's already been done? Damn! I wanted to be first on my block.
Good hunting. LB

See, that's another thing, Vic. I have no problem with anybody that likes to acquire new shiny toys but I already have enough for my lifetime and if my kids are careful, their's too. My motivation is getting a little clouded. I have this feeling that my 44-40 will still do an adequate job on coyotes fifty years from now.....if I do my part! bwa ha haa ha
