This is a first for me. I traded for a .308 and upon sighting it in found that the first shot from a cold barrel will be placed about 3 inches high than the rest of the five shot group. What can I do to correct this. I shot three groups and all were the same. The barrel was clean upon starting, and was cooled between groups. The barrel is not free floated. By the way the gun in a rem 788. I was shooting 150 grain Sierra SP with 43grains of IMR 3031. A quarter would cover the remaining four shots in each group. Some of you gun guru's give me some input.

A full 3" out for the first shot is pretty ugly. Never had one that bad, myself. Or even close to that bad, for that matter. Probably the easiest and cheapest thing to do would be to simply make sure you get a fouling shot down the bore after cleaning and before hunting. Best and most expensive thing would be to get a new barrel. You might try treating the barrel with colloidal graphite or something like that after cleaning to kind of simulate fouling. But with that first shot being that far out I wouldn't put too much hope in it.

Second thought... Three inches is just too much to be explained by fouling. Or heat either - from only one shot.
I'm starting to thing maybe something mechanical. Scope, mounts, bedding screws, something like that. Maybe?
Hell, I really just don't know...

Three inches is alot. Do you oil after cleaning? Did you run a dry patch through after cleaning?

Guys....you don't understand. I shot three five shot groups. Cooled the barrel in between each group, with no cleaning, and it did it on every group. A cleaned , oiled barrel is not the problem. Fouling is not the problem. I'm dumbfounded on this one.

I`m no expert nor do I have the answer but I did have a 788 in 22-250 that shot very well with a hot barrel but the first few shots were always a couple inches off, which makes for an absolutely worthless calling rifle. I`ve always wondered what I did wrong with that thing.

How well does the rifle fit into your rest? Could it have a front sling stud that isn't getting seated into the rest firmly until after the first shot?

Well, if the single reason is the first shot from a cold barrel, versus subsequent rounds, then my guess is the mechanical with the barrel (thin pencil?) bending away from either the sides or maybe the sling swivel nut and/or screw. Of course, that would depend on the barrel always warping vertically when warm. The first thing you need to do is slide a business card along the forestock and see if you have enough clearance. If you do, you have an extremely poor quality barrel and you should get rid of it. Three inches is astronomical. Not worth further screwing, unless you want to just solve the problem. I can't see any further explanation; fowling or oily condition is seldom that severe, and you say that is not the case, so it's either mechanical or you have a very crummy barrel. You didn't say the make and model?
Good hunting. LB

Try floating the barrel, you might find the problem while you got it apart. If that doesn't help the only other thing I would do is trade it off for something else.
