HEH! From reading this forum I might be able to talk the wife into letting me get another gun. YEY!
Been using my standard hunting rifle. Remington Model 700 .308 with a 4x15 bushnell firefly on top.
I know, I know, I am going to get shouted down in here because all you people are using smaller cal but dangit I FREAKING LOVE my .308
If I was to get another guy for coyote what would everyone reccomend between a 243 and a 223?

Get a 22-250 and you will never regret it. The problem with the 308 is recoil and the looping trajectory. (personal opinion) I own one, but it doesn't see much action on coyotes.

edit: I doubt that anyone will take issue with you for using what you have? It is just that there are other, more suitable choices. And, don't judge us by that 17 thread, that just happens to be the most controversial caliber on the planet.

HEH! Well that is good to know.
I used to use my AK-47... Did not like what it did to pelts though. My .308 seems to do a lot less collateral damage to the pelt.
Plus when I hit something I like it to just stay where I hit it. Following a wounded coyote is an exercise in.... well... it is just exercise.
Will take a look at the 22-250 though. Been looking for a good lower cal varmit gun.

The 22-250 is probably most versatile, all around great coyote rifles that I have ever tried.

Slip an old guncase out to the truck. Then go hunting. A few days later, bring the new rifle into the house along with a couple of calls and tell her you forgot to bring everything in.

HEH! Believe me she knows. This is the same woman who was wondering one day on how to make her baby eagle into a belt fed fully automatic baby eagle. She loves shooting about as much as I do.

She laughed when she read that last one Leonard. I might try that ploy sometime. Either that one or smuggling in the parts one by one and assembling them in my shed secretly.
BTW - Does anyone know where that little wishbone looking thing goes on an automatic shotgun?

Speaking of Johnny Cash.....I just finished watching 'Walk the Line'. Damn fine film!!!!
Grayman; Before you buy a new coyote cannon, ask yourself how you're going to use it. Do you hunt tight brush or open beanfields?? If most of your shots are up close & running, a shotgun may be the way to go. Long range & the 22-250 go together well but if you're taking coyotes regularly at 100 yards a mini-14 may be all that you need. Do you hunt from known stands or do a lot of cold calling in unfamilliar places?? Hard to beat the Savage .223 / 12 Ga. O/U if you don't know for sure what you'll need when you get there.
One other thing you may want to look into is if you can buy those sabots for reloading .308 that Remington uses in their Accelerator rounds.

I'm pretty knew to hunting the "Old Wise One". I only watched half a movie a guy let me borrow before I was at the local outdoors store bought the calls, camo, and gun all in one visit. I got talked into the RUGER 220 SWIFT is a good gun????
So far so good on my behalf but I just wanted to know what the experts thought thanks guys.

the .220 swift and the 22-250 are almost ballistic clones. the 22-250 has more manufactured rounds to choose from if you don't reload.
