Just bought Rem VS SF II in 223.I plan on using Winchester brass,CCI BR-4 primers,Varget powder, all which I use in my match AR-15 for high power shooting.Since Barrel twist is 1 in 12,I bought 500 Hornady 50 grain V-Max bullets, any ideas on what amount of powder to use? Also is 10 thousands off the lands a good place to start on seating the bullet?thank you much for any help.

You have already decided on everything! With what you have I would start touching the lands.

But I would use a different: case, primer, powder, and bullet, so what do I know?

When I work up a new load, I like to start out just into the lands. Then slowly seat deeper into the case while looking for optimal accuracy.

Seating into the lands causes higher pressures. So once I pick the charge to give me the speed that I want, I start at the lands and work back.

First of all, I'm very interested in knowing what components Jack would use?

Myself, I am starting with a Remington LVSF in 223 punched to Ackley Improved.

I'm using Hornady 55 grain VMax with 28 grains of Varget and Federal primers, WW brass, and I can see some significant variations in weight, so I did some culling and dividing into groups.

I have only tried one different bullet for comparison, a 52 Hornady match HP. Groups about the same and shoots to the same spot, so I assume that it is not a finicky barrel?

Other than that, unless it is a single shot, seat the bullets so they fit the magazine rather than so many thousanths off the lands.

I keep seeing a few powders that seem suitable in 223, BC2, 4064, R7&15, H320 depending on bullet weight. The Varget (28.0 gr) that I'm using right now is about the slowest burning rate and I'm using relatively heavy bullets. I get around 3300fps with the 55 VMax; next loading I'll jack it up a few tenths, since it is the Improved chambering; primers look okay.

Other than that, it just depends on what you intend to do with it? I just got back from a hunt down in Texas, used the 55 VMax for four(4) one shot kills on hogs to 180 pounds, plus one Corsican ram. Perfect performance, no exits, bang/flop.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

I would use the 55 V-max, IMI case, WW748, and regular Win primers. In a bolt gun I seat the bullets firmly into the rifling but can't do that with the ARs because of magazine length.

When going after only coyotes I use the Sierra 69MK with everthing else the same.
