I've recently come to realize that it IS a good idea to have a shotgun with ya when calling. I have a 20 ga mossburg pump chambered for 2 3/4 & 3 mag. I'm not a big fan of droping $2+ per shell for "coyote dead hevi shot", so what would you suggest using, what size & what shot?

Fehler, I would swap the 20 for a good 12 gauge that accepts screw in chokes. If you get one that is designed for turkey hunting, it will probably come with an extended length X full or xxfull turkey choke. I would then purchase a box of Federal "premium" or Winchester XX magnum fodder in either BB or #4 Buck. Be sure to pattern your gun on paper to see where the point of impact is, and how dense the pattern is at various ranges. At some point in time, you will want to try different choke tubes while searching for the ultimate coyote recipe. The turkey choke will do a fair job for ya though. Probably whack coyotes graveyard dead out to 40 yards or so.

Sound advice, Rich.
I used to favor the 00, but as the hides get thicker and the fur primes up, those big old 00 pellets just don't have the velocity to do much more than roll 'em over hard. I'm refitting with all #4.
Now, if I can just figure out a way to remember that I have the scattergun at my side when the need arises, rather than automatically reaching for the rifle...

Cdog911, The problem I ran in to with the 00 Buck was that there wasn't enough of those big pellets in there to hold a dense pattern at longer ranges. The darn things just got too far apart in a hurry. I do have a "Kicks" X full BuckKicker tube that seems to throw decent patterns with the 00, but I never got around to shooting enough of those big pellets to start recommending them. I have taken my fair share of coyotes with the shotgun, but have mostly favored a rifle for the past several years. My old friend Monte Dodson got me started on "wing" shooting those running coyotes with a rifle. "Don't wait for em to stop, SHOOT EM". ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
