A couple of weeks ago I took a yote with my shotgun......57 yards, not a bang-flop but dog wasn't going anywhere. Since then I've decided to set up my extra shotgun for coyotes. All that being said, I took my Special Field(20" barrel) 12ga. BPS out to do some patterning. For ammo I had some Federal VitalShock 3" #4 buckshot.......I used a regular sized plate to act as my "vital" area(put the plate over the densest part of the pattern and counted).
Modified.....useless out of my gun......6 pellets@40yards.
Full.....Nice, grouped about a foot high.......12 pellets@40yards.
Extended Turkey(Factory Browning version .690(?).....best.......16 pellets@40Yards.
I'm thinking the turkey tube will make for a great 50ish coyote gun, guess I'll be buried in the thick stuff for a while
Must buy.......sights, need to center the pattern better. New recoil pad, dam I hate patterning 12's.

Good report, I'm tempted to do the same. LB

Dug one of the pellets out and weight it, 21 grains. Not as heavy as I thought they'd be but I guess 41 of them at 1210fps would still get your attention.

when you shoot that # 4 buck with a full turkey choke I was told that your shoot would be flat on one side, not on modified choke.
gun smith told me,I don't know.

That's why you have to pattern your gun, regardless of the shot size or the choke you choose. If #4buck was being flattened entering the choke, if it wasn't contained by a cup or a plastic sleeve, then I'd be concerned more about excessive pressures, a real no no in a shotgun.
My theory, such as it is, is to hit a coyote within 40 yards, and jack another round into him if he even flinches after hitting the ground. I don't think this is exactly like the reasons for super tight chokes to save edible meat on a turkey, while blowing his head off. We just need evenly spaced pellets across the entire body, maybe centered on the frontal area, for a lethal hit.
A turkey is stationary when you pull the trigger, but a coyote is probably(?) running by, or else you would be better served, using a rifle. It's a slightly different application than turkey hunting, although a turkey gun does make a decent platform, for starters.
Anyway, that's my take...
Good hunting. LB
