Who uses the 308 Winchester for coyotes? Occasional usage, or main battery; doesn't matter. Which way do you go, light bullets or heavy? What sort of damage do you see? Do you see any runners with heavy bullets?
Good hunting. LB

No response, therefore, it can't be done?

Sorry Leonard, but I'm no help. I don't even own a rifle over 25 caliber. The biggest in my artillery is a 25-284. I've owned about one of everything at one time or another, but never a .308 Win.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Cal. I'm not a fan of the 308, either.
But, I have a special application. Age old problem called "brush busting". Some folks say it can't be done, which is fine.
Most of my gear is 22/24/25 caliber. I do have some bigger stuff, and a Model 700 that I never thought, in a million years, that I would buy, since it's chambered in 308. But, I did.
I think the slower speed, combined with the heavier, larger diameter bullets, stand a better chance of getting through the lacy twigs than anything else I have. (think, large stands of creasote) Coyotes love it, but getting a clear shot is another matter.
So far, I have used 125 to 150 grain bullets. I'm curious as to what others (may) have found success with? Just for grins.
Good hunting. LB

I've never tried the 308 Win that you asked about, but I have hit a few with a 308 cal. If it is light brush, twigs and leaves you are wanting to pass though, I'd stay with the heavy for caliber bullets (180-240 grain)

Not much help here. About the only person I hear of using the .308 on coyotes is Boddicker. I get the impression from reading his articles in TPC and VHM, that he really likes it and uses it alot. I doubt if he has much concern over the fur friendly aspect of the .308 since his background is in predator control. I think he uses a 125 or 130 gr bullet? Might be able to do a little digging to find out for sure.
I purchased a .260 a couple of years ago thinking about brush busting and wind busting and also long range shooting capabilities. Still haven't got a load worked up that I really like, but the 6.5,120's and 140's BT's knock coyotes down real hard. I'm sure there's not alot a difference between a .308 shooting 130 gr's and a .260 shooting 120 gr's or 140's.

I've killed quite a few with a 30-30 when I was a kid, and it did real well and not bad on fur, most of the time. I have also killed lots with 308's, 30-06's, 300's and several other big game cartridges while deer hunting over the years. For the most part if you use good consrtructed bullets they are not to bad on fur. They sometimes run a little, but usualy not out of sight. I have a dandy little pre-Garcia Sako Forrester with a full Manlincher stock in 308 that I'm taking on my bear hunt with Jay. I may pop a coyote or two with it if we tag out early on the bears.
