Hi all

I have been thinking of suitable bullets for the .223 and have had good luck with the Nosler Ballistic tips in other guns. How about the 55 grain NBT for coyotes?

Thanks

Jim B.

Good choice, as far as I'm concerned. LB

In my 223s the v-maxes are more accurate and better killers.

The truth is, I tend to agree with the V-Max's, all things being equal. They cause more damage, and they are very accurate, in every gun that I have used them in. However, a lot of people like the Nosler's. I use the Nosler Ballistic Tip 100 grain in 25 caliber only because Hornady doesn't make the V-Max heavier than 75 grain.

But, the Nosler is a good bullet, no doubt. Nobody is going to laugh at you, for choosing it. [Smile]

Good hunting. LB

I haven't shot many coyotes with the 55 v-max, in 223, so the jury is still out on coyotes. However, I have shot lots of fox, groundhogs, rock chucks, and PDs and they work very well. A couple weeks ago I went to Montana for ground squirrels and was worried that the smaller ground squirrels would not allow the v-max to expand enough. I should not have worried as they were more spectacular than 3 different bullets from my friends 22-250. I was really surprised at how fast they expanded since they have pretty good penetration on the larger critters.

I have not shot that many coyotes with the 55 Vmax in my .223 either. About 20 or so. Had to shoot an awful high percentage of those a second time though. I think it's more because I kept hitting them in the shoulder than anything else. Long habit of TRYING to hit them in the shoulder, from years of using nothing but the Sierra 1365 in my .22-250. Not a good place to hit them with a Vmax from a .223! Never lost one of them hit like that, or even had to chase one of them, just had to shoot them again to make them die.

I'm not a fan of the Nosler B-tip, in general. Simply because I've always been able to get other bullets to shoot better in my rifles. And because I'm still pissed at Nosler all these years later for the price gouging before Hornady brought out the Vmax. But, that thicker base seems to be just enough of a difference to make them better killers on coyotes.

I have not used the V-Max in a .223 on coyotes.

I have used 55 gr V-Max out of a 22-250 on a lot of coyotes however and they were deadly. The rare occasions that a shot was pulled and hit the spine or pulled off to one side of a straight on chest shot, it could get messy. But the majority of the time fur damage was non existent for me and the coyote expired quickly.

Broadside or straight on I had to look for the hole in the hide. Had to shake some of them to get some blood to run out. One shot and the coyote just flopped over where it stood with monotonous regularity. It was one of the most effective bullets I've used on coyotes.

Out of a .223 performance may be quite different. Dunno. It might be different out of somebody else's 22-250 even. I've read some negative things about this bullet in the past. I just haven't had those problems though. Theories of why guys have had different experiences with this bullet have been discussed many times so I won't go bore you with that again. Rifle twist, bore roughness, jacket stress, velocity, etc...

Haven't used the Nosler on coyotes. The V-Max has been more accurate for me and cheaper too. I do use BTs in my .270 for deer and really like them though. Very accurate.

Good hunting

Oh yeah, almost forgot. They were excellent on groundhogs! [Smile]

The best fur bullet i have found in the 223 is a 52 gr. speer match h.p. the bt and the v-max bullets are to explosive in my oppinion , If i had to i would use the b.t , never a v-max they are just to explosive and you get runnaways .
The 22- 250 like Curt said is a diffrent story .

The only fur friendly b.t. load i have found in the 223 is a 40 grain bullet if placed right .
