When should you sell firearms?

I am not talking about family heirlooms, but things you have not used for 10, 20, 40 years, and you do not need the money from them.

e.g.

None of your heirs show the slightest interest in your 1930s Parker shotguns, and you have not shot them for 30 years.

Factory rifles from the 60s which you have not used since.

The absolute best(cost no object) target rifles from the 80s, which haven't been shot for 10 years.

Yes, I need more room in the safe.

I pleade guilty, but not always.

For one thing, I like to have intimate knowledge of every firearm that I own. I do not believe it is possible to get the highest level of performance from 50 or 60 different guns. Twenty is hard enough.

But, I am not a hoarder. I will dump a piece to obtain another. Sometimes I regret it. [Frown]

I have a few that I should dispose of, and for which I feel no emotional attachment.

Maybe my junk for your junk? Eh, Jack?

Good hunting. LB

It's a bad disease ain't it? There have been times Ive sat with paper and pen to jot down the rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers Ive owned. I should have kept records over the years, but I moved some of them so fast, there was no time to. My memory runs out somewhere the other side of a hundred, but every now and then I remember one from the distant past. My safe is looking like Leonards now, with around 20 something firearms. Thats really "to many" from a practical aspect, but practical, a shooter and hunter isn't.
If your not using them, and see no prospective heirs, sell the damned things. You've had time to know them, now pass it on to someone else who might be looking for just the piece you have. Take the loot, and buy another friend, or fritter away on one of your other hobbies.
Boy......I sure wish I had a few back, that I let slip thru my hands:)

I think twenty something is about right for an active hunter. Any more than that, you are a hoarder; which is not a condemnation, okay?

But, I don't see how anybody has a use for more than that? Collector, different story. I'm talking about working guns.

I've bought guns that I have never found a use for, can't figure why I acquired them, in the first place? Also, a few that I didn't jump on, and regret it to this day. I know guys that have never sold a single firearm, and do not actually USE but a small portion of what they have.

The word "Impulse" comes to mind. I can't say I am that way about most anything else, and yet, I strongly object to the term; GUN NUT. I'm not one of those, but I have known a few.

Good hunting. LB

edit: okay, thirty is fine with me, as long as you can slip them past the little woman.

I will admit when it comes to guns I am a hoarder. Two years ago I parted with two guns that had not been used in 15 years. To this day it still hurts.

If your offspring show no interest in them, do the good thing and find a genuine up-and-commer, somebody who has more talent than cash, and get them off on the right foot.

Be that person interested in hunting, or competition.

I agree with Tack with 1 regret. I always feel like it is a piece of the family. Even the bad acting one that let me down is still part of the group. Letting it go to an newbee is a great gesture though.
