Pretty much every governing body: Federal, State, and Local, defines longuns as either rifle or shotgun. By definition; rifles have rifled barrels and shotguns are unrifled.

Therefore a "rifled shotgun" is not possible. If it is rifled it is, by definition, a rifle. Yeah, I know we are slipping something through the cracks here, but logically it does not flush.

Don't even think about a "parent cartridge" argument, plenty of African big game rifles are using shotgun bores with rifling.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is great that we can sneak a rifle in and call it a shotgun. I just have not seen any justification for doing it.

Jack

I am not a governing body, And as long as I am with in the law. I don't worry about justification.

I am just a hunter. If the state says I cant use a rifle. I must use slugs. Then by all means I wont a rifled barrel on my shotgun. Is it now a rifle. I don't know. I just know it is the best tool for the job when placed under those restrictions.

If I hang a blade on the front of my four wheeler to clear snow. Is it still a four wheeler, Are is it a snow plow?.

Even though Iowa has a shotgun only season for deer, most hunters in my area call their deer guns "Slug Guns" regardless of smooth or rifled barrels.

I don't know, but I have the feeling that there is something I missed, that prompted the above post?

The history of muskets and rifled barrels has endured a number of ups and downs. Just why a "rifle" is called a rifle, and not a long arm, is beyond my recall, at the moment?

For many of us, rifle and shotgun seems to cover most situations, although I am aware of 4 bore elephant guns, etc. and how they evolved.

But, I find it interesting that the first Gulf War was delayed for several months while they refitted a bunch of Abrams tanks that had 100mm rifled bores to 120mm smooth bores manufactured in Germany, and designated the M1A1, which is how they were able to accurately target and kill Iraqi tanks from a range of 1½ miles.

That has always puzzled me, but they say it has something to do with eliminating the drift caused by the spin emparted by a rifled bore???

Good hunting. LB

I believe the reason for the refit to smooth bores Was for the deep penetrating sabots. Now this answer is worth just what it cost you.

Check out birdman.org for the latest .50 cal mini nuc's. Make sure you watch the video on firing the mini nuc.

As far as the shotgun-rifle issue I think its a subject of safety rather legality of terminology.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, Frank Johanns. Glad to have you on board.

I can't believe a hunter from the southwestern state of New Mexico would want to know about slugs for deer, in a forum entitled "Firearms for Varmints and Predators"!
(just funing with you, partner) [Smile]

To be quite honest, I've never fired a slug at any animal. We just don't do that out here, ya know? [Smile]

Good hunting. LB

Just what I thought.
Nobody has a clue why they are not arresting people with rifled barrels hunting in shotgun only seasons.

I have no idea either, just curious. Curiosity is a terrible disease but not easily treatible.

That's about par for the course, Jack. Didn't hear about that one, but it is believable. Do you have a link for the clueless?

Years ago, a Warden would give you a tip on where the bucks might be hanging out.

Now we have enviro-chicks, dressed in Warden garb, going to extreme lengths to protect "her" animals from the senseless slaughter.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

Some of us still have quality Game Wardens, and mine is a great source for information. As well as several members of the Border Patrol's Horse Patrol. Most of the BP that ride in vehicles don't know the difference between a coyote and a Javalina, and don't know anything at all about hunting seasons.

We have a playa near me, great place to find all kinds of critters, but it is restricted by "No rifled barreled centerfires" But it would be a great place for coyotes and cats with a 17 HMR.

Thank you for the Welcome Leonard. I joined THE PREDATOR MASTERS recently but I didnt get a personal welcome like you gave me. I guess they are too busy beating each other up. 17hmr and stuff.

You are right it would be silly here in NM for slugs from what I have read. I confess in that I am pretty New to NM myself. My ex-bitchfromhell oops sorry ex-wife, had roots in Iowa though if you were intrested.

anyways glad to be on board ! I look forward to more great topics from you old (Im sure you are all much much much older than me [Razz] much much older) veterans.

If you made your first post in my forum, Firearms at PM, you should have got a welcome. Of course, topics are always changing sequence because of new posts. It is possible to miss a new post because of this, and by the next day you have 3-4 posts and might have made your first post, and were welcomed in another forum.

If you made your first post in my forum, I am sorry I missed it. Well, I didn't really miss it, I just missed it when it was labeled #1.

Thank you too Jack. I only just posted in THE PREDATOR MASTERS firearms section for the first time today. But you dont have to say so now in there. Yours here suits me fine. I think that firearm section is likely the best reading so good job to you Jack.

Until you said something I didnt even think to look at somethings that I have now noticed since I have had a chance to browse thru both places. Im new to this so maybe I am wrong on this too but my reason being for saying that is it looks like as they say, some of the Head Chefs dont eat in their own big fancy restaurant, and instead come on over here for something hearty and delicious to eat.

I think Leonard deserving of some prety big praises for his Cafe here. This is where Ill be eating most.

Gee, nice compliments, Frank. Thanks.

I want you to know that I used to Moderate the Firearms Forum at PM, and recommended Jack to take my place. He's an excellent Moderator, and knows a lot about shooting stuff. And, he don't play the games; we are lucky to have him stop in here and visit, whenever he can. I know that I always pay attention to what he says.

Good hunting. LB
