Mr. Carlson and everyone else;
Given you have been shooting the 19 caliber for a while, what is your opinion of it?
As you know I was hot to trot on the .20 but it seems too much gun for the 60 - 100 yd shots that I tend to have available... but I am still looking toward another rifle between the .223 and the .17 Rem; The 19 in some fashion seems appealing... the 19-223 is appealing due to the fact there is plenty of brass and shrinking the neck should be easy enough for a novice reloader like myself... The same may be true for the hornet based round as well.
I would appreciate your opinions on the topic...

Well, I shot Vic's 19 Calhoon a couple times, offhand. It's very nice, well made, a triffle heavy, but I was impressed with it.
I've looked at Calhoon's website, and the 19/223 seems more suited to my application, but another chambering that I have been mulling over is that CZ, but chambered in 223 Improved.
In other words; too much to consider. I could go either way, but I'm definitely interested.

Norm, Leonard is right on this one. I think the .19-.223 is probably the better platform for what you want. There is no fudging with the 19 hornet, if you thought the .17 rem was a surgical insturment, this one beats it all to hell:) It basically pushes a 27 grain bullet(my choice, they come heavier if you like) at 3,600fps, amazing for what it is. The .19-.223, surpasses the .17 rem, scooting the same 27 grain bullet around 4,300 fps, pretty impressive. I can't help but think it would show a marked improvement over the .17 rem in coyote killing efficency? Like you, the 20s didn't really stir me, the .19s did. Very neat caliber, easy to load, and the hornet version is very quiet to shoot. Ive killed 20 coyotes with it this season, and only clipped two with bad shots that got away, but most fall right down.Check out Calhoons web site, all you need to know is there, get on board Norm, you'll be glad you did.

There is a wealth of information there that is for sure...

Get one Norm, then you can convince me to do the same:) I was kicking around the .14 Walker a year ago, but came to my senses, Im a minimalist, but thats tettering on the absurd.I am really looking at the .19-.223 for a 17 rem replacement cartridge, just haven't commited yet.

I will be getting one... just a matter of whether it will be a bolt gun or another encore barrel. Leaning towards a browning a-bolt; but finding one of them used .223 is a challenge.
My next wildcat is going to be a 17 cal built on a 300Mag cartridge. make take a while to form things up, but it will spit it out there pretty fast!!!! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Why the switch to the 19 over the 17 cal.? Isn't the 19 and 20, very close to each other?

And why not let the Hornet have an honorable death? It was top dog in it's day. It started the fast 22 cal trend, but sure can't compete with modern cases, either in accuracy or versatility.
It is a low pressure, rimmed case, with an indefinite shoulder. Nostalgia aside, there are much better choices now.
40 some years ago I had a Win Mod 54 (I think) in the Hornet and it was great. That was then, this is now. To put things in perspective; when the hornet was king, a 16 year old could go to the local farm supply store and buy a case of dynamite.

Vic, I think (thought) he's alluding to the parent cartridge? Case design. Maybe it's the weak brass, I don't recall what the shoulder angle is on the 19 Calhoon?
Do you have any idea what pressures you are generating? Is it above 50,000 CUP?

what about a 19/223 in a contender or what about the factory .17 Rem. Wont they both shoot in the contender. Woul.d be a flat shooting pistol if it wood
