Topic: Do you use a handgun in any capacity, while hunting predators?

I always have one with me, but it seldom leaves the vehicle, unless I need to finish an animal.
Do you carry one on stand? What is it? How often do you need it?

Yes, when I'm calling before the bears den up and I'm using my 223 rifle I will have my 45/70 revolver with me at the stand. The 223 just doesn't impress a griz much. If toting my 12guage I usually leave the revolver in the truck as my 3rd and following loads are usually slugs & 00 shot.

Well, John. You get the prize. There is no way I'd call a stand in bear country without a good handgun, and preferably a partner. Of course, the slug gun is a good choice, also. Maybe the best choice? But, this question is directed more towards the average guy in the lower 48.

I carry a colt Mark 1V Government model in .45 acp that has been slicked up for reliability. It is for the two legged predators around my home town. Sometimes I carry it, sometimes not. The predators never know when I do or don't.

Sort of like you Leonard.
I have a 357 revolver in the truck but only take it out when there is not enough time to get the rifle out.
The most frequent use is when badgers run across the road.

I carry either my Colt King Cobra, or my Glock 22. I actually killed my first called coyote with my Colt. I haven’t set out to get one with my Glock, probably never will, it is nice to have along sometimes though. I wanted to carry my Glock while hunting in Arizona but all I had was ball ammunition so it stayed in the truck. Next time I will have hollow points, to comply with the Arizona Law.

I nearly always carry a sidearm when calling.
Most of the time it is either my old Colt woodsman or Beretta 87 (both .22 lr), to use as a kill gun, or for potting something edible on chance encounters.
On state lands or on two of the farms I have access to in particular, I carry my 10mm Glock 20 in case I run into some cantankerous livestock bent on doing me harm, or in the case of state lands, a rolling meth lab, or pot field.
I know a few people that have encountered the latter, and I had a close up, unpleasent run-in with a very large, very pissed off bull about 8 years ago. The .17 MachIV I had with me felt mighty puny. 16 rounds of full-house 10mm in my right hand may not of actually been much more effective, but it sure made me feel better, and kept my shorts clean.
Two rounds in the dirt and he changed his mind, as I did likewise, and we both beat a hasty retreat.
I shoot the bull quite enough without having to do it literally. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I carry a 45 acp almost everywhere.It works great on two and four legged predators.

There you go. Exactly what I use, 45ACP. Seems to cover all aspects, reasons and requirements. 9MM, I don't know about that stuff, a little too new. Hey, whatever works, right?

I normally carry a 1911 in 45 ACP or a Blackhawk in .357
Some stands, the handgun is all I carry. Calling in tight brushy areas can make for some quick shooting, you don't always have time to bring a shotgun or rifle into play.

Ruger Sp-101 .357, 24/7. unless I am feeling lazy, and not calling alone, then it stays in the truck. I do a lot of post-control fire investigation, and that litle revolver is good company.
