I just got a 17hmr.CZ-452-american,we can only hunt rimfire/shotgun on public land for furbearer's.So thought I'd try one of these little dudes out on fox, bobcat this fall. It's like a baby model 7.Anybody got any expierience with 17hmr. and 22mag.I think it will do good inside 100yds. Also do you guys like the electro-dot reticles for low light/night hunting?I'm thinking a 3x9 burris with dot will make a good combination.Anyway what'cha got? Sporterweight

I had a Marlin automatic 17hmr for a short while, but I traded it in towards a 17Rem barrel for my Encore, and a Charter Arms 44 special Bulldog, for stuff that messes with me while I'm carrying such a small caliber single shot rifle,LOL .
I liked the 17hmr well enough,it shot really good, but I think a 25 grain pill from a 17Rem has a better chance of surviving long enough to hit the target,in my area, because of the brush, etc. You might as well plan on cleaning that rifle every 10 to 12 rounds, it gets dirty quick.Take some cleaning equipment with you to zero, you'll probably need it.
As to whether or not it would be a good fox or bobcat rifle,I don't have a base of experience to speak from on that, better let Leonard or someone else answer.

Don't leave it up to me.
I have never killed a predator with a 22Mag, much less the newer 17 rimfire. Seems like slydog has?
Personally, I think the threshold is much higher, for us average people. But, no experience whatsoever.
Good hunting. LB

Read my own post,I figured with most everybody having real nice centerfires there would probably be some people with some neat rimfires.I don't think a rimfire is by any means a calling gun.But since it is all that can be used here--I'd try it on fox but a bobcat would have to pose at 30yds.and give me a benchrest shot!!I'd personally not shoot anything bigger,my thoughts were"what's your rat popper..?"I'd use it on a coyote if it were attacking me,what part would be the best to hit him over the head with-stock or barrel ?Sporterweight

All bets are off, sporterweight, in a pinch! Use what you have, use what is legal, use what you want.
Actually, I think for close in standing shots at either fox or cats, you should be okay. Calls for the proverbial "precision placement".

I was the "first on the block " to get a 17 hummer around here. Picked mine up in the Ruger configuration when they first hit the market. Snagged the first off the shelf they had in Tucson, and still had to wait three months to get my mitts on ammo. Last winter I used it on and off for predators to draw my own conclusions.First, let me say, no, it's not a reliable coyote killer.....big news ehh:), but with precise shot placement it does get the job done. I killed nine coyotes with it, and had three missing in actions, poor hits, that if done with any other rifle, would have had them at least flopping and spinning before they tried to get up and boot leg it. A 17 grain bullet isn't a lot to work with. Of the nine killed most literally dropped like hit with any other 17, a couple made a furtive mad dash of maybe 20-30 yards, then folded up.Now, the good news.....it is probably the best little fox rifle a guy could have for short to medium range work. All my other 17s' are prone to rip up the small bodies of our grey foxes. The hummer is perfect medicine for the small species we have here, and I don't doubt that on reds it would excel also.Cats, are the upper limit I think, a big cat, is on par with a average coyote as far as weight. I took one cat last winter with it, and am sorry to say took three shots to put down, but only one example is not much to work with. It's all about putting that tiny bullet in a vital place, same game as with any caliber, only magnified. You'll enjoy Im sure, they are a ton of fun.

Actually, what I really meant, concerning cats, at least, was head shots. Vic, that's a dicy situation, glad you recovered that cat.
But yeah, a nice choice for grays. The problem is that you are looking at coyote way too often, and then what?
All in all, I don't know why I can't find room in the safe for one of those little "fun" guns? Maybe, one of these days?
Good hunting. LB

I have a few, very expensive rimfires for competition. Feinwerkbau and Anschutz, and working on a Morgan. I am pretty sure I will eventually get the Morgan, I may not be able to justify shooting it.
The only rimfire rifle I shoot animals with is a 10/22 which is not much Ruger anymore. The only Ruger part left is the receiver, which is now threaded for an Anschutz barrel. Bolt, stock, trigger, everything else is different. It is almost unbelievably accurate and when ground squirrels show up inside 60 yards, I use it instead of a centerfire. No problem hitting them further out, but they are tough suckers, and the 22LR is no powerhouse.

I just recently installed, a Lilja "drop-in" barrel, on my Ruger 77/22 in 17HMR.
I was amazed at the accuracy of this thing, and it sure is a blast to shoot.
If it ever stops raining around here, I think it will be perfect medicine, for groundhogs, where I can't use my centerfire.
I think it will be a good round for fox also.
Best part is, it seems to like the CCI ammo, the best. That makes ammo fairly easy to find around here, since most guys like the Hornady better. I am not sure why this is, but I think Lilja uses a 1-10 twist, and I believe factory is 1-9.

Yeah AZ-the fox around here might go a whopping 10lb.I shot a red years back at about 30ft.with a 22mag.it popped a hole out the far side that wasn't pretty. We can use shotguns that would work good on all predators. But I'm a rifle man all the way,it's just not the same to me. Hodgen,us east of the mississippi guys mention a centerfire rifle to a landowner-you'd think we said sherman tank!! Your lilja/ruger combo is spoken very highly of here and there. It's just amazing to me a rimfire shooting .7-.8inch at 100yd..I hear the cci stuff gives better penetration---.Sporterweight

I like the Lilja/Ruger combination sporter.
I wanted to get a 17HMR, but didn't like the feel of the Savage and Marlin rifles.
I had this 77/22 Varmint anyways, so I gave it a try. It was still about $150 cheaper than buying a new 77/17.
I was pleasantly suprised. Even without floating, bedding, it shoots great.
I have had a few 5 shot groups, off the sand bags, I can cover with a dime. But usually most take a quarter to cover them up. I guess you can only expect so much out of factory rimfire ammunition.
