I'm looking for a walk around coyote rifle. I'm looking pretty hard at a new Savage rifle mdl 12fv in 22-250 with the new Accu Trigger system for about $400. Any opinions?

Good serviceable rifle for the money. That model is a bit on the heavy side for what I consider a "walk around". But not really TOO heavy, my Dad has one and carries his over hill and dale all the time.

For me, the biggest problem with that gun is the fact that it's top heavy. Synthetic stock varmint guns(heavy barrel)are not well suited for slings. You have to hang on the butt of the gun constantly in order to keep the barrel from falling backwards. A real pain when crossing fences, climbing gates or crossing cuts and creeks. I'd lean towards a wood or laminate stock in you want the heavy barrel. It's a couple more pounds, but it makes a better counterweight for the barrel. IMHO

The main reason I asked about the heavy barrel model is because Savage only offers the new Accutrigger system in Varmint & LE series. I don't want a heavy rifle but could put up with the extra weight if the gun is a shooter. I have a semi custom 30-338 with synthetic stock & 26" barrel & it doesn't seem to be a problem. The Savage rifle lists weight at 8.75 lbs so it shouldn't be too bad. I guess I really want the new trigger system & will have to keep looking till I find a store that handles Savage so I can get my hands on one. Anyone seen the new Savage rifles with the Accutrigger system?

If you like everything else about the gun, why not cut 6" off, and have it recrowned? Balance restored and the weight becomes a little more manageable.

Good hunting. LB

Hey CC,
You down in the Lamar area? I'm up in the Springs. How is the 'yote huntin' down there?
Been meaning to take a trip out around John Martin to look for dawgs, just haven't made it there yet.
Glad to see another Colorado guy!

CC, it it's just the trigger that has you wanting that model, you could just get any model you want and put a new trigger in. Everyone I've talked to that has tried one says the SSS and RB aftermarket triggers for the Savage are nicer than the Accutrigger anyway.

Leonard, that's a solution if the gun is too heavy or unbalanced. Is a 26" barrel needed in 22-250 or will a 24" or 25" be enough?

DawgK, I'm NE of trinidad, zip code EIEIO.

DAA, the reason the Savage looks so good to me is it has a better than average trigger & the price is right (about $400) without any extra cost for adding a new trigger.

DawgK, I'm very close to Hoehne. I have a buddy that hunts Pinion Canyon but I haven't been able to get together with him. Too much work & not enough play.

There is a soloution to the balance problem, its called a safari sling, puts the gun in front and at the ready and will not interfear with sholdering the gun in a hurry. About 20 bucks and don't take a brain surgeon to install. I even have one on my mossberg.

I was born in Denver and raised in Grand Jct. Boys and proud of it. Things there have gotten a little strange for me, huntin, trappin NOT, and people to many. My best friend still lives in GJ but wants to move up here.

Hoehne?
Wow, had to look that one up!
Heck, you don't NEED Pinion Canyon with all that range-land around you...but if you WERE thinking of hitting it, it will be open to the public next weekend (22nd). Closed this weekend due to training.
I'm gonna be out there in a last attempt to bag a bobcat that has eluded me since I called him in pre-season!

DawgK, lots of ground to hunt & not enough time. Good luck @ Pinion Canyon, I hoped to take a Bobcat this year, didn't happen. Still a little time left maybe I still have a chance. BTW what do you suggest for a walk around rifle, 24" barrel in 22-250?

T-N-T, I have a Safari Sling & if I end up with a long barrel that weighs too much for semi Old Guy I'll sure try it. I used to hang around American Falls many moons ago, wished I could go back for a look.

CC, my walk around gun is usually my AR-15 (.223).
It is a Panther Arms Lo-Pro Classic with a bull barrel.
Not exactly LIGHT, but very accurate.

Those cats are OUT there in PC, I called one to within 32 steps right before the season.
big ol' rotwieler (sp?) lookin' cat!

FYI, the weekend of the 22-23 will be the last weekend you can take a cat on PC. I'll be down there at the gate by 6AM on Sunday if you want to hook up.

DawgK, this is the worst month of the year for me to take time off work so I have to slip hunting trips in between. I'm pretty much stuck with quick local hunts. Let me know how you do.

If you colorado boys ever get a chance to come up here drop me a line and I'll show you around.

Re: Savage new trigger!

Don't look for this rifle in any of the sporting goods stores. They will not let you take the trigger lock off to try the trigger out. Been there and done that already. It is their store policy not to let anyone pull the trigger on any weapon.
