may as well be me [Smile]
Got an itch to build a wildcat that borders on insane. Less than zero shits given regarding barrel life, efficiency, or powder burn. Just wanted something that would kick azz on just about any other .224 hotrod I could think of. There's no replacement for displacement, so I took a parent SAUM case and necked it down to .224 caliber! You may recall me pondering doing this a couple years back? Anyhoo, it only took a little tinkering on the bench, and my ".220REDLINE" was born...
Parent brass is Norma 7SAUM. Used my Redding Type S dies & various bushings to neck down brass in three steps. Then a quick run on the K&M neck turner to shave & true necks to .015", and viola....220REDLINE brass!
Here's an 80gr AMAX/REDLINE next to a 140JLK/6.5SAUM4s:
 -

Sent dummy rounds off to JGS Tooling to get freebore dimensions ironed out, and a custom reamer made. Also got a 1:9" Brux on order, so we're full steam ahead! Hope to have this badazz ready to test before Christmas...

Without getting bogged down with the 'methods behind my madness', expectations are to launch an 75-80gr .224 bullets in the 3750-3900fps range from a 26-27" barrel. Based on performance & case capacity of current monster .224 hotrods like the Vais, Howell, .22-6AI and .22-284, hoping this .220REDLINE will be able to cruise right on past 'em, courtesy of a full payload of ultra slow burn powder...
Only one way to find out! And what better way than to see for one's self?

Messing with Quickload program helped with regard to powder possibilities. H1000, Retumbo, and RL33 all look real good, from what I can tell...
Utilizing all that extra case capacity with slow burn fuel was sorta my reasoning for this project. Hopefully, I can keep case pressures in the 'mild' range while generating the kinda velocities that will turn some heads!

So, what's the case capacity? About like a 30'06,60 grains?

Parent SAUM case hold ~72 grains H2o. Obviously, necking down will impinge on that a bit. I'll weigh some REDLINE cases after 1x fired to get a verifiable measurement...

For comparison's sake, the REDLINE will still hold ~4 grains more than a .22-06, if ya necked one down. Gonna be a badmuthafucka!!!

QL is predicting charges in the 61-65gr range, depending on powder.
