Just received a text from a fellow wolfer and he ended his message with "Happy Memorial Day".

Huh?

Just last evening, I was talking with my 16 year old daughter and made the comment that I was waiting for the first person to wish me happy Memorial Day. She just started laughing and I asked her what she found so funny. "Happy Memorial Day? Are we supposed to be happy on Monday?"

I was proud of her for knowing the truth. So, I asked her what the purpose for the holiday was, and she had to let me down when she said, "Veterans?" Oh well, she bats .500.

I reminded her that Memorial Day is the day on which we remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, whether they died in action or they dedicated a portion of their lives and have since passed away. I reminded her that Veterans Day is for still living veterans and that Memorial Day is not, in fact, the day we place flowers on the graves of everyone we have known and loved - there are 364 other days to remember them - or to barbecue and get drunk at the lake. Memorial Day is not the official first day of summer. It is a solemn and powerful day that is anything but "happy" and I invite each of you to take a moment tomorrow and say a prayer for those whose sacrifices make our freedoms possible.

Rather than wishing everyone a Happy Memorial Day, I told those I met on my route yesterday to "have a great weekend, and take a moment Monday to remember."

So, to each of you, have a great day, and take a moment tomorrow to remember.

Very good post, Lance. Yes, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance. "Happy Memorial Day" doesn't quite convey the essence.

But, it's like everything else. You want an education, ask in the Hispanic neighborhoods, see what they think Memorial Day is all about? And, if you think it's being taught in the public schools, I'd be very surprised. Bonus question, "what is Cinco de Mayo about? Hardly any would get that one right.

Then, go across town, ask the same questions but the bonus question would be; Why we fought the Civil War?

I sound like Watter's World!

Very nice post Cdog. Memorial Day has a special meaning for me so it's not likely I would forget what the day is set aside for. I was born into a military family.

I will be making ribs tomorrow. When my dad died he left a bottle of scotch behind and every Memorial Day I serve myself a drink from it. If my friend from Alaska is here we both have a drink to our dads out of the bottle. His old man was one of the Marines who fought in the Pacific during WWII. He was a great guy, too. We used to fish with him when we lived in Alaska.
