I've been reading Fur's Savage build and it raises some questions. I don't wish to hijack his thread so I thought I would start a new one. I've always used standard dies. Nothing fancy but sometimes I will expand the neck using a lyman m die. I have some questions regarding bushing dies since I've never entertained the idea of using them. I guess I figured they were for bench rest paper punchers.

Using bushing dies, I would believe you would have to keep brass sorted by the lot number, or am I wrong. Does neck thickness remain close enough the same from different lots so long as you use the same brand of brass say Winchester?

Or do you have to neck turn all necks for consistency to successfully use bushing dies?

A'm I correct in believing that pulling the neck through the expanding plug may be the reason for case runout issues?

Looking at the Akley Improved cases raises some questions. The shoulder angle is so steep it looks hard to full length resize. Do you Akley guys only neck size and/or full length resize?

Fur's thread reminds me that I have a 22-250 I've never shot. It is a model 70 feather weight. I'll get it out one of these days.

I saw this yesterday and have waited for somebody to respond, but , <sigh> nobody has, so I will do my best.

Question: I guess I figured they were for bench rest paper punchers.

Answer: I have never seen a reason to figure thus?

Question: Using bushing dies, I would believe you would have to keep brass sorted by the lot number, or am I wrong. Does neck thickness remain close enough the same from different lots so long as you use the same brand of brass say Winchester?

Answer: I think it would be good to only use one brand and one lot of brass. Since this is an accuracy situation, it follows that you would be self defeating to mix.

Question: Or do you have to neck turn all necks for consistency to successfully use bushing dies?

Answer: Hmm? Yes, successfully might be the operative word, here?

Question: A'm I correct in believing that pulling the neck through the expanding plug may be the reason for case runout issues?

Answer: You are correct in believing this MAY be a reason for case runout issues.

Question: Looking at the Akley Improved cases raises some questions. The shoulder angle is so steep it looks hard to full length resize. Do you Akley guys only neck size and/or full length resize?

Answer: Neck size or just barely shoulder bump, or full length if you are careful.

Question: ? Fur's thread reminds me that I have a 22-250 I've never shot. It is a model 70 feather weight. I'll get it out one of these days.

Answer: This shows the level of interest to be slightly above zero.

No, really. There are many sound, valid reasons to go Ackley. As somebody somewhere mentioned, they are also really cool miniature ICBM's. What's not to like about that?

Thanks for you input Leonard.

To me the Akleys look like the case walls could buckle if you tried to full length resize. This could be especially true if one was to resize from a chamber with close to maximum headspace to facilitate using some old brass in a new gun say with minimum headspace.

Your comment kinda confirms my suspicions: "Answer: Neck size or just barely shoulder bump, or full length if you are careful."

I always sort the brass by manufacturer, but by lot numbers probably no. I've order a thousand pieces of brass once and had 10 bags with 100 pieces in each bag with two different lot numbers on these 10 bags, YUK. I also have sometimes purchased brass from a bulk bin at my favorite gun store. They seldom let these bins run out so I'm sure I've had different lots from these bulk bins. Who knows if all of the brass in a box of 1000 from a mail order house are from the same lot. They may have mixed up the lot at the mail order house before shipping.

The Winchester Featherweight was purchased more on impulse that logic. I know the old man that owned it and he was a WWII vet who was selling out because he suffered a stroke. I miss that ole man. It has a Tasco scope and I've never liked Tascos. Much of the delay is laying out the money for a Nikon or Leopold. I also purchased his inventory of 22-250 loading supplies which includes close to 1,000 pieces of brass from the bulk bins I mentioned above. BTW: They always sell Remington brass at this store. He worked at this gun store and got paid in reloading supplies. I'm sure that his brass is from different lots. That featherweight barrel would never hold up for prairie dogs but would be a fine gun for calling if accurate enough. For me a MOA or less is fine for coyotes. I'm not looking for consistent five shot 1/2" groups. Most of the shots I've taken are at 125 yards or less.
