Does anyone use any type of night vision? I bought a Gen 1 NV monocular about 12 yrs ago. It was a POS but did well enough at short distances. I just bought a Yukon Nightfall 4x 50 Gen 1 monocular the other day for $130. Makes my old one look like a kids toy as far as clarity. I never used the older one too much for night hunting because it was so limited in it's capabilities.
Had a cat in the yard last night and the eyes looked like huge moons when I turned the IR on. At 250 yards anything reflective jumps out at ya with the IR LEDs on.
Should be a great tool for my night hunting which has lagged the last few years. I can't see anything with red light and have been using a green light which I've had mixed results with. I'm super excited about it!!

If you mean visible light, I can't get excited about green. For coyotes, I prefer red.

Not visible light, Leonard. An actual night vision infrared camera style monocular. Let's you see at night w/ out using a "visible" light source.

Then, apparently you mean the green tint seen with NV? Damn, I used to be able to understand you once in a while!

The guy can be a friggin' dilettante, sometimes. And, with the verbal economy of monosyllable and murky responses, it makes a patient man want to choke the shit out of him. Not to hurt him, necessarily, just to get his attention and his head out of his ass.

I'll write it so that the elderly can understand [Smile]

I can't see worth a shit using a flashlight of any color. But using a night vision device, like a picture shown by TA, I can see EVERTHING AND PICK OUT THE EYES AT 150+ YARDS! I AM VERY EXCITED TO USE THE NEW MONOCULAR I PICKED UP THIS WEEK FOR ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SEVEN DOLARS! MY HEAD IS CURRENTLY INSIDE MY ASS SO I AM SHOUTING THROUGH MY ASS HOPING YOU CAN HRAR ME! RIGHT NOW IT'S DIFFICULT TO HEAR AND READ, ON ACCOUNT OF MY HEAD BEING LODGED IN MY ASS CAVITY! CAN YOU HEAR ME?

Leonard, I have not JUST discovered it. If you read the original post, I have REDISCOVERED IT! And have a half chub over it, too.

He said "half chub". I don't pretend to know what that actually means, but I wish him well.

I called in a fox this weekend, while I was visiting my parents. They are out of season, so, I was just calling for fun.

Using the night vision I spotted the fox from 300 yards out and up to about 50 yards. I know I would not have seen it with a spotlight. I'm very pleased.

Did you see the eyes or......?

Posted by smithers (Member # 646) on May 31, 2011, 09:44 AM:

Eyes at 300- 350. Full body as it got inside 125-150 and started to angle off and not come straight at me.

I wish I had a way to set up a video recorder to it. I have a Sony video camera with NightShot on it but it's not too good past 20 yards.

Edited to add this: I howled 3 or 4 times and did some random animal distress sounds for 10 minutes with hand calls. Then I switched on my little handheld caller and played Gray Fox distress and 45 seconds later that fox was on a beeline to me.

That's a decent range for non military equip. I've borrowed NV in the past and it was AT BEST a huge disappointment so keep us updated on any more experiences with it.

Try setting youre cam. up on a tri-pod and just hold the night vision up to the CAM. lense.

I tried it with my iPod, TA, and it sorta works but it leaves a lot to be desired.

JD, I was surprised as hell too. Like I said, the last one I had was a POS, this one is good.

 - .

A raccoon up in a tree in my back yard. Picture was taken at about 30 yards by putting my camera up to the lens of the NV. Looking through the NV is much clearer than the pic shows. Interestingly, I looked at him for a few minutes thru the NV and then flashed him with a small 20 lumen pocket light. As soon as I hit him with the light, he lowered his head and averted his eyes and as soon as the light was turned off he'd look up and right back at me. I did this about ten to 12 times and each time he'd lower his eyes. He didn't like the bright lights of the big city.
