This is what happens when you bring a gun to a snake fight:

I've never understood people's reasoning for killing non-venomous snakes.

That looked like a sidewinder to me? I know a guy that lost his thumb screwing around with a sidewinder that looked cute and harmless.

I also shot a very large diamondback one time. He was reared up and threatening and I missed his head three times before I hit him and tossed him all ass over teakettle. But the interesting thing was that he sensed the bullets passing by and although it was too fast to actually strike at them, he turned at them as they passed. (one of those things where I could actually see the bullets) I suppose, being a pit viper, with their heat seeking abilities, he could sense the heat from that 230 grain 45 as it passed? Kind of impressive. I set the rattles out to dry but a damned crow stole it. 14!

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: yes, I agree about non venomous snakes.

Sure looked like a sidewinder to me, too. Millions of them around the dry lakes near Barstow and Cal City. Damned near everywhere else, too. Hot day in the mid nineties and right after the sun goes down.

South of Barstow a few miles out of town headed towards Lucerne Valley is a good place to find Speckled Rattlesnakes. Farther out is Sawtooth Canyon. You'll find lots of a lot of different kinds of rattlers there.

Ive killed a shit ton of rattlers. The last one I recall (cause Ill never forget it) was one I sat on out by Taft area calling in the summertime. Bunch of wild ground (not farmed, still desert)and I spied a lone sagebush to sit by, and when I sat down...without looking of course..I sat right on top of what I thought was a stick. I heard the rattle,I jumped up at light speed and immediatly recognized what I had sat on. I walked off a ways, then started panicking and looking around on my lower body for bite marks, and waiting for the pain, but apparently it did not get me. Must have been the lamest rattler ever cause he sure could have fucked up my day.

I've been bit twice. Both times on the ankle. First time was near Salinas and the second time was near Winchester. Stepped on the second one in the dark looking for a bobcat I'd shot. I lucked out both times. Dry bites. Still caused a little swelling and pain, tho.

That's what I like about Alaska. No snakes. Just 1500 lb brown bears.

Did he even hit it?

There's a road that goes up out of Whitewater, near Palm Springs and theses collector types just cruise the blacktop after sundown, lots of snakes just laying around. But Fish and Game are up there too and if you don't have a permit you might get a fine.

I used to have a California Mountain King Snake that I got that way. That is just about the coolest damned snake you ever saw. But, any snake that eats rattlers is my hero.

One time, up in the mountains, I happened to see a King snake slithering along the side of a hill. He apparently found a space under a boulder and went in there. Immediately, on the side nearest me, here comes a small rattlesnake panicked right towards me that didn't want anything to do with that King snake. All I could do was jump out of the way.

I knew that King snakes killed rattlers but I didn't know that rattlers also knew it.

Good hunting. El Bee

I had a King Snake living in the tool shed wing of my Man Cave last summer.
Totally cool critter.
King Snakes have a 'presence' about them. Hard to describe but real.
Another month and the snakes should be out around here.
Gila Monsters, too.

A regular King snake is black with yellow stripes, but the California Mountain King Snake has red and either white or yellow stripes. Very pretty. Also, every one I've seen was quite a bit smaller than the regular King Snake, maybe 3-4 feet? But, anybody that kills a King Snake is a dirty rat fink, in my book! I used to have a gopher snake, found him right out front had him quite a few years and he got really big, maybe close to 8 feet? He also got mean, as soon as you lifted the corner he was up there, striking at anything that moved or didn't move. Those poor mice hardly hit the floor before he gobbled them. I watched him take a lizard one time and this was very strange. He swallowed it folded in half in the middle. I always thought they took their prey head first, but not that time.

LOL! Too funny!

A few good ass kickings in those King snake bars and those rattlers get it figured out don't they?
