As I was headed down the freeway to the place I intended to fish, Don't Need Nothing but a Good Time by the band Poison came on the radio. I knew it was a good sign and I cranked the knob up on the volume and thoroughly enjoyed singing along with the song, at the top of my voice. It had been a super stressful week and I REALLY NEEDED some alone time on the river. I didn't catch a lot of fish but the fish I did catch made the whole trip worth it.

On my third cast I pulled this beast of a brown trout from the deep. He gave me one heckuva a fight and used the strong current to his full advantage. Once I got him on the bank it was happy dance time! He is my best brown out of the Missouri to date.

On the very next cast this beautifully marked brownie smashed my marabou jig and resulted in cause for another round of happy dancing. While he's not quite as big, he was plenty big to keep me happy.

The day was cold. The river was uncrowded. I was able to spend the day in solitude and for me that was perfect bliss. The white shown on the dam is solid ice. I can't even begin to guess how many tons of ice are clinging to the side of the dam. I imagine when it starts to melt and slide off of there it will be quite a sight!

Wow, two casts, two beautiful fish! You know there must be some real lunkers down deep, out in the middle.

Reminds me of a guy I know who devised a method of catching a record brown out of Pleasant Valley Reservoir. First he was going to use a model boat with swivels to get way out there and down there where they lurk and since no boats are allowed he then walked across the face of the dam with a guideline anchored to the opposite shore and cranked his latex rainbow trout very deep and slow, back and forth, bumping it along the bottom.

The record is somewhere around 46 pounds but I think it was from Crowley, a little further upstream? I myself have seen some huge fish patrolling the far side, which is extremely difficult to get to. I can only imagine what lurks down the main channel.

Anyway, I never heard anymore, besides the expectations. It's like they say about the huge catfish that lurk deep at the Hoover Dam, easily man size.

Like the guys with a plan to catch the world record Largemouth Bass. The theory being that whenever it is caught, it will be a Florida strain taken from a California impoundment which has favorable growing conditions. And, sometimes they do it.

Good hunting. El Bee

Leonard your story reminds me of a video I saw on YouTube. Some guys were surf fishing and wanted to get their bait further out. So they rigged up a drone to take their line way out there and then drop it in the water. I thought it was pretty creative and it worked. They caught nice fish!
