Well it's that time of year I suppose. Anything interesting going on yet, wherever home is ?

I've got 6"-7" of snow @ my place & we got a layer of freezing rain last night. Was going to go to town & get tires for the pickup today.

I'll go test the roads in a bit. Oh' BTW my goats don't seem too thrilled with the white stuff, Lol

Not too thrilled? You mean they're still in bed?

Just thought of something funny. You know all animals can be pretty funny sometimes. My bird Pinky went with me to my daughter's for Thanksgiving. (getting to the funny part)

So, there was her female Pug, little dog with a kinda monkey face, and you had to wonder what was going through her little mind when Pinky was barking at her. Yes, Pinky knows about maybe a dozen actual words, but is a pretty good mimic, like the door bell and the telephone, stuff like that. But he cracks me up when he gets to barking when he hears a dog in the neighborhood. He seems very proud of himself. But, he runs it into the ground; SHUT THE FUCK UP !

Good hunting. El Bee

Pinky barks ? Lol..Nope not in bed. The wife keeps saying somewhat teasing ? They need to come inside.

Well, put a heat lamp out in their house. Good enough for spoiled goats, I suppose ?

My road was a sheet of ice this morning. Went to town, skipped tires, bought a few bags of ice melt & sand for the driveway ect. Spent a few hours outside. I'm tired, lunch is cookin' then a nap [Smile]

Koko you suck [Big Grin]

I have heard that there are a few animals you can house broke, break, whatever you call it? They say a Potbelly pig can be trained to go potty outside, so maybe you can do that with goats, they're kinda alike, ain't they?

Pinky? Don't even ask. He dumps whenever and wherever he is.

You might be right Leonard ? I need to clean the goat house tomorrow. Seems like they poop in the corner mostly ? I need to pay more attention.

Outside they poop @ will !! This crust on the snow has 'em baffled, they want to run & can't !!

Good times in the N.P.

That's kinda where my observational skills need honing? Whereas cattle seem to shit anywhere, horses like to back up in a corner of a pasture, consistently. I think? Them goats are usually smarter than cows and that's one step on the road to civilization; where's the Latrine?

To illustrate, in South Africa, the government built bunch of "Long Drop" outhouses for the Zinc shack people but they prefer to shit in the bush by the streams, fouling things downriver. Not their worry, since cleanup is easier, lacking paper goods. Well, Duh!

Good hunting. El Bee

PS "Zinc" is what they call corrugated steel roofing, a highly sought commodity all over Africa. You got zinc, you got the makings of a home.

My old "milk barn" is "Zinc" as far as the exterior goes. Wooden walls & framing interior.

It's warmer than a guy might think ?

Laid a coat of "barn red paint" over that baby this summer & it looks good. I think anyway. It was probably built in the 50's 60's ?

I see bad weather in a lot of places. It looks like 6"-12" later this week. Then a few days of below zero. I could have it much worse though.

I had several tree branches snap off, spent a lot of time yesterday trimming & dragging limbs out back. Where's Koko ? I need help !!

We've had two snows not much couple of inches now its back to 60 in the day. its been in the 20's at night. Took the great nephews out for a little calling first stand the youngest 15 I think doubled on fox when his older brother's AR goes click. Took the older one out the following day for redemption got it done. What a treat seeing these young guys get their first predator. Dave;
I would love to help but I just returned from a brutal calling trip.
Way out in the Wilderness. Probably 10 miles from the motel. The motel didn't even have room service or valet parking. Really primitive. We ate at a truck stop that had good food but no idea what a decent Martini is.
It felt good to rough it but thank Gawd my buddie's truck has air conditioning. We might not have survived out in the desert without it.
Back home at last but still need to drop the camo off at the Dry Cleaners.

Besides that, ko ko, you talk about Martini's but until now, you have talked a lot about something called "everclear"? Have your tastes changed?

You still a Big Mac kind of guy? To me, they are totally inedible, as in, I practically strangled my girlfriend when she brought me one instead of what I requested; a quarter pounder. No, really. Whoever invented the Big Mac should be taken out and shot!

What about Taco Bell versus Del Taco? Yes, I know that's not "Mexican Food". I used to prefer Del Taco by a wide margin but lately, they actually suck! I'm going back to Taco Bell when I want real authentic imitation Mexican food. I can eat a half a dozen of their cheapest tacos when I'm in the mood.

Anybody notice that not only has it become impossible to find a decent Buritto, now even tacos are really hard to find, so many places have found that it's easy to fuck up a damned taco! Anybody notice that there is a distinct difference between California Mexican food and Arizona Mexican food?

We have a few places down in the middle of LA where you can get a damned burrito that would feed three normal adults, Either the Manual Special or the Hollenbeck, looks like a loaf of bread. This is the La Tapia (sp) right in City Terrace and across from a Catholic Church.. You can't get in there without waiting in line. The cooks use a frying pan that is at least 20 inches across and it's one frying pan for each burrito, chunks of beef and beans, (pinto, no damned black beans) if you want them, onions, and any kind of chiles you want. (hint, try the Anaheims) You really can't beat this food and the folks vote all day long, there's no slack period. I mean really, everybody deserves a burrito this good at least once in their life! Might as well get it wet because you sure as hell can't pick it up and chew on it; it's a knife and fork proposition. I don't even know where they get a flour tortilla that big? I should really take pictures. Damn, I need to make a special trip one of these days. It's fun to bring someone who has never been there, they will be talking about it long afterwards.

So, what else?
Good hunting. El Bee

Didn't know there was another? I just googled Ontario, Oregon. Population 11,000.

Ontario, California has a population close to 200,000 making it one of the largest suburbs in Southern California, but there must be 20 or 30 of them in that range?

Good reason to stick with Ontario, Oregon, I'd say.

Yeah, there ain't shit goin' on in Ontario. That's also, why I like it !!

As the crow flies, I'm right about 6 miles from Oregon & 8 miles from downtown Ontario. It's actually our hub city & largest city on this end of things.

Looks like, some shovel duty tonight..

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 14, 2016, 05:07 PM:

Yeah, shovel duty, snow watch. I imagine that's the talk of the town, tonight?

I noticed that Ontario is just barely in Oregon. I know that Washington people drive to Portland to buy stuff and thereby save sales tax. I imagine savy Idaho citizens are aware of the potential savings, especially when they are looking at $200,000 combines?

Good hunting. El Bee

Posted by Dave Allen (Member # 3102) on December 14, 2016, 07:49 PM:

Actually Leonard farm equipment is tax exempt as are parts. Vehicles are not & if you buy one in Oregon, ya wind up paying tax, if nothing else when it's license & registration time.

However Idaho people buy groceries. Home stuff, whatever & avoid the 6% Idaho sales tax. Ontario does have a Home Depot that's handy. Wally-Mart & a Farm Ranch store.

That's really about it though..Oh yeah a prison also, biggest employer around. I can see the lights from out back of my place.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 15, 2016, 07:09 AM:

Oh great! Now you tell us! A prison right over there so when they get away, they can hide in your goat shed. Then, having just got out of prison, your goats will get raped by the Afghani's, frequently. Then they will hate you for not protecting them! Who could blame them? I mean the goats.

Let's hope it never happens. but consider an 8 ft. fence with razor and concertina wire around the whole place. One of those guard towers like they have in Africa ain't a bad idea either.

Google Kevin Cooper.

You guys' ramblings crack me up. But I am sometimes amazed. I'm a big mac guy all the way. That's my McDonalds meal, 2 big macs, no fries. Every time. As for mexican fast food, here it is Taco Johns. Taco Bell sucks. No comparison. True story, Taco Johns was started on a street corner in Cheyenne by of all things an out of work mexican sheep herder. Now it is quite a franchise, but probably hasn't got all the way to California. As for the weather here it was bad, down in the negative double digits (thats without windchill) last week. But I was in Vegas so I really didn't care. Tonight they are saying close to a foot of snow and high winds. Saturday temps will dip again to the -20 range. Windchills will be off the charts.

Shit, and I said I was considering Wyoming? Thanks for bringing me to my senses!

Now, is that snow straight down or blowing sideways?

Do not get me wrong. I know what Taco Bell is, and it ain't Mexican food, I know that. But, for what it is, it's better than Del Taco and that ain't much.

But, the La Tapayac in Los Angeles is the real deal, nobody would argue otherwise. Damn! I gotta go down there one of these days!

Did you know those guys that crashed?

Good hunting.El Bee

edit: now, if you click on that link to La Tapiayc (however you spell it) you will find that they definitely have Los Angeles Prices! I think that Manual Special that I mentioned is $19, but like somebody said in the comments, it will feed two people and still have some to take home. This is food you just can't describe, you have to experience it. Period.

Winter Storm Warning in effect from 1 am Saturday to 1 am EST

* Total snow accumulations of 6 to 14 inches are expected.

Locally about a foot of snow here in the last week. Temp with current wind chill 3 degrees.

Walt, I always felt that Austin was the coldest little town in Nevada. It's where a sheet of black ice almost sent me and Pat over the edge one morning. Always see gray fox around there.

You know, Austin is a waypoint for planes on the polar route from Europe. Probably have to go by there to avoid Area 51? I'm pretty sure it's right on the continental divide, you know, water flows left towards the Pacific or right down the Mississippi. Kind of a unique place. Might still be in Nye County, not sure 'bout that?

Don't miss that weather? Just think, if you hunted at night, like I do! I mean, it's really brutal. Cold, high pressure and the coyotes are running on a new moon! Don't get any better.

I think you will start missing Nevada before long?

I'm with you on that one Dave.

I'd take 25 degrees all winter long rather than the just above freezing stuff and the slop that goes with it. We have had a longer than average stretch this winter already with the temp not getting above freezing and I'll take it.

For my bitch though, normally we have several weeks of the snow-depth building, which gives me a window of time to get to places to hunt that eventually snow out, making them inaccessible.

Not this year. It came in one big blast and many spots I didn't get to and likely won't anymore.

Yeah, that thing where the sun melts on a grade and you don't pay much attention going down. A few hours later when you have reached the absolute end of the trail and want to get the hell out of there, but guess what? That slush has frozen solid and you can't get up the damned grade! I always pack two sets of chains in the winter, almost never use but one. However, sure feels good. My Titan, I only pack cables, much lighter. I hate the part where you put them on. Up in the local mountains, Big Bear, Arrowhead, etc. they have pull over spots the CHP designates and there are young fellas that will apply your chains to get to the ski areas, for a small fee. that's money well spent, I think.

Now that you mention it, $19,000 does seem a little steep considering what you get in a 5th wheel or any other conventional trailer. I don't know shit, and maybe you are paying for that well thought out design, the axle configuration and they way it's towed? Maybe it's built like the proverbial brick shithouse?

And, I understand, that was 8 years ago and things probably cost more now? It's a Cadillac ride, so to speak, but I've seen trailers that size in comparison, and side by side they are half the price. And, I paid close attention to the skill required in maneuvering that thing in and out of a gas station; gotta go with your A game.

But no getting around it, it's a damned nice rig. Sounds like not many available for resale, probably snapped up right away? Don't see many on the road, at least I don't.

APB, be on the lookout, Cal needs one! Wonder if anybody rents them?

Those 5th wheels are nice for summer and early fall excursions but when the temps. drop they are a piece of shit. They are not well insulated at all. I've talked to guys that have taken them out when it was really cold and they used both tanks of propane to heat it in a couple days and still got cold all night. lol Its all about the efficiency. Eddie, ya jinxed us!
Woke up Saturday to 6" of snow [Big Grin] Headed out early to sister's house, driving (in 4wd) was like playing a life sized game of 'Frogger'. Woulda been a nightmare if there were any more traffic volume, though...

Beyond the shitty insulation rating of thin walled 'traditional' RV trailers, I'd think the suspension & tow angle would be lacking to get anywhere mildly 'off' the road?
My Uncle useta have a 20' camper that was the 'beachcomber' edition. That trailer frame was set high, and had a rather more robust suspension & ground clearance than a basic RV. I always thought that trailer might be a decent 'spike camp' up in the 'Dacks...

Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on December 19, 2016, 05:43 AM:

Aussie style offroad camper is what I'd like. Nobody imports them though, so getting one over here is an expensive bitch.

But, really, I hate even the though of being tied to one place on a coyote trip. Love the freedom to roam as I please and camp wherever I end up at the end of the day. Almost never come back out on pavement where I left it. Often surface again a couple hundred miles from where I left it.

And, then too, it's a rare tow vehicle that can go where I like to go.

If you have to have a trailer, something like Chad's rig is THE way to go. But even his just wouldn't work for the way I like to roll. There are some that would, and tow vehicles to go with them that could get most of the places my Jeep can. But that's powerball fantasy crap, not anything worth mentioning.

Still happier tenting it, m'self. Was 5 below zero when I woke up in my tent yesterday morning. Didn't suffer in the least. Had the whole camp packed in the Jeep, coffee brewed, cigar lit and ready to roll in less time than it takes most guys to hitch a trailer. And immediately headed into some stuff very few tow capable pickups would fuck with.

Dave brings up a very good point though. Where you can get off road with the sheep camp it is limited in where it goes. Which has been a pain at times. I like just going and exploring like Dave mentioned to areas I haven't been before and it is a pain to have to get way in somewhere just to turn around and come out.

What Chad just mentioned is quite common in certain parts of northern Nevada. There are many trails that wind uphill, usually to some mine and that's it, no choice but to turn around and get out of there.

Calling at night, we might make 2 or 3 stands going up and if smart, maybe the same number on the retreat downhill. The reason is that those cats take their sweet time coming in and either they are too far out, or they are blocked because of the terrain. Often enough, there will be a cat sniffing around where we were an hour ago. Well, maybe not a lot of sniffing, but they still poke around in feline fashion. I may never get over that chickenshit "resident only" regulation?

I will say that the things Dave does to get into prime areas does have a downside and that is it wastes time. I try to find a happy medium, where I can make more stands and not be crawling over rocks too much. Some guys might make 6 stands a day, or at least, the most productive part of the day. Others can figure out a way to make 15 stands in the same amount of time. And, I have always believed, it's a numbers game.

Setting up within hearing of a pair of coyotes isn't very hard to do. But, will they bother to come in, that's one of life's mysteries. So many coyotes, so many that are receptive, so many are approaching from a favorable direction, so many are detected, some are not, and some manage to slip away without offering a shot. If you can average 50%, you lead a charmed life; hopefully there might be the bonus. An occasional double?

You work at it, plug away and some days they are running better than others. Everyone knows, right after snowfly, those little critters are more eager. That's when you thank the Coyote Gods for putting you in the perfect place, and at the perfect time.

I need to get out!
Good hunting. El Bee

It was 3 degrees this morning. Had to work on a roof top unit at work. One of the bad parts of my job. 5 more years I keep telling myself.

Dave, I would love to do half the shit you do. Your photography, hunting, and just all out adventuring. I'm just not that hard corps anymore. More power to ya. You know, 200 years ago you would probably have been a Daniel Boone or Lewis and Clark type. [Smile]

Yep, sun came out today for maybe an hour ?

Right now it's 9 above. Foggy as hell. Humidity @ 80% colder than shit. I think, I mentioned in this thread, went out to do quick chores when it was 4 below & sunny, winds calm ect.

Didn't feel that bad ? The fog & humidity coupled with snow on the ground. Makes it feel damn cold !! I'm in my second winter here & the fog really ain't a big deal. (edit) Because, I drive rural or semi-rural roads. Don't feel the stress.
When, I lived on the other end of the valley, the pollution that hung in the fog. Is what really-really made me cranky [Wink]

Raining right now. We've been getting this wet stuff frequently, the past month or so...now that my lawn is dead from water rationing. There's a $1000 fine and enough NAZI neighbors to turn you in, so fuk 'em. Forecast in two days, overnight low, 34 degrees! Good thing I already brought in my Desert Rose, for the winter. Plumaria's are on their own, way too big to get in the door. If it's going to be a cold winter, I will have casualties.

It says two more days of rain here a-bouts? Forecast still claims we will be flirting with freezing temps by Saturday. If I wanted this, I'd be in Seattle, and I HATE Seattle! What is wrong with those people. 180 days straight, of rain and doesn't faze them a bit! They know just the ticket for depression, "Sunshine Therapy". And, they all vote for Liberals....go figure?

Actually, Tom, (my younger brother who just had a bypass) is in Tumwater, (you know, where they make the beer?) and sells cars in Olympia. He's married to the Bitch that forced him to disassemble his guns into the smallest possible components. And, I mean, down to the last friggin' screw. I know he had to take one piece that LE brother-in-law took apart, to a talented gunsmith. Reason being, he was slapping around a girlfriend, and this was before he married this current Bitch. And see, now you all know our family secrets.

But, see what weather does to people? I'm about to go stir crazy after two days. Can you imagine if I was serving time in Tumwater? I think that's the actual reason why the Bitch insists that all firearms in the house be rendered inoperable and stored in the attic. You know, where they are handy, if a need arises. Like the National Sport in Olympia, the state Capital, Suicide That type of "need". Okay, okay, it's the state sport in Washington; at least the western half. Over in Spokane, they are decent people. Except the ones that used to live in Olympia and Tacoma, etc.

I'm getting out of here before I offend those creeps up in Washington. TTYL

PS, I'm thinking of making the traditional scalloped corn to bring to Christmas dinner in Escondido. That's hosted by Diane, mother of my recently discovered 22 year old granddaughter. Boy, is there a story to tell! It's just my son, sowing his wild oats, but he won't be there, of course, he has a moron for a wife. And, I do not abuse the term. But, she's a nympho, and that's all he cares about. Me, I'd step over her willing body, looking for a good place to jack off. Please excuse the salty, (but truthful) language.

We sit in a double run shadow effect area.we'll see how it goes later today. Still cold temps. 14 below yesterday with a high of 8. Mostly sunny with late day clouds coming in. Okay, the weather report here, (and I know you all have been waiting anxiously) is....56 degrees and rain, ever since I got up, which was 5:30. Gotta work on that. Raining screams: STAY IN BED!

But, forecast is rain all day! All night, too. It does kind of dull the incentive to get out and get something done. Want to chicken coop until it stops. And, when you get right down to it, I have nothing of major importance that can't wait.

Maybe shopping will force me out of the house this afternoon? We have a drought in SoCal, you know? Every time it rains, the authorities remind us that it doesn't matter, we still need to conserve. And it doesn't matter, we still can't build impoundments to save the friggin' water! EnviroNAZI's are such jerks! All this damned water flushes straight into the ocean, wasted! Hello? We need to contain it when it rains. Green wienies are such idiots! Can't build a dam, 'cause the damned fish can't wiggle upstream; or something? Brainwashed! Strict party line policies.

Ever notice that? Liberals never ever break ranks! They are programed, nobody allowed a dissenting opinion. Because, if they do, their NAZI friends won't talk to them anymore. Overused words by Liberals: RACIST and NAZI and HITLER.

Good hunting. El Bee

I bet I can't get to the range if I wanted to? Have to cross Lydal creek and with this much rain, some people try it and stall. You know, it's an adventure; I can make it! But the water flows too fast and splashes, soaking electronics under the hood. Too friggin' bad! DUH!

Some real winter for the first time in many years.

5" of snow last night. Usually the valley where I live, doesn't as much snow as the higher elevations around us, but this winter it has been colder and and it has been staying.

Lots of people here try to get through winter without snow tires, this winter wouldn't be a good one to try that.

What amazes me is the amount of people (usually guys) that I will see having trouble driving in town, won't use 4-wheel drive.

A young guy (20 y-o) that I work with commented on the tough traveling on the snow-covered-roads the other morning. I had just drove the same stretch 30 minutes earlier and didn't think it was that bad? I asked him if he had his truck in 4WD and he said "No"

I than asked him why in the fuck he didn't use 4WD? He said the thought he really didn't need to put it in 4.

The funny thing is I hear the same thing from young people all the time. One gal told me she thought it was hard on her Blazer to use 4WD so she spun and slid her way to work. I finally convinced her that using 4WD wouldn't destroy her Blazer for the trip home.

Jacked up pickups with $2500 of tires and wheels but won't use 4WD?? I just don't get it?

Bitch over for now..

Us, local hicks figure were right @ two feet for December. Heavy snow year for us. Were probably ? done, with the worst, for the winter ?

Lonny, we seem to have the opposite problem. Everybody sticks it in 4WD & likes to see how fast they can travel & least on the side roads ?

Must have started after I went to bed? Coming down pretty good right now. According to the forecast it won't let up until 5 PM.

This seems like a wet winter, if you ask me? Must be some way to claim Global warming, oops, excuse me, CLIMATE CHANGE !

How did they ever get away with that change of title? I'm for sticking with the NON EXISTENT, "GLOBAL WARMING". The way it is now, anything that happens anywhere is proof of CLIMATE CHANGE.

No doubt, they are good. At lying! Flim Flam. Figures Lie and Liars Figure. And Loretta Lynch thinks she should be able to prosecute anybody that denies CLIMATE CHANGE

That's how crazy Liberals are! They want to punish anyone that disagrees with their bullshit. They shouldn't be in charge of anything, much less the Federal Department of Justice!

But now they have suddenly gotten extreme militant over Session's nomination because he didn't get a federal judgeship thirty fucking years ago! Duplicitous Liberals don't understand what the word means and are not embarrassed. It's a friggin' MENTAL ILLNESS, DAMMIT !

And, they are brainwashing our kids seeking higher education! And, we are too stupid to put a stop to it! Pray for us. That's another thing they can't stand. PRAYER. They don't trust it, at all, and they think it should be illegal. MENTAL ILLNESS !

Just like Eddie, we are in the bullseye to get .5 to 1" of ice from tomorrow through Monday morning.

The amount of ice we get is going to depend on how fast the rain falls...slow we get more, harder rain, we get less.

Preparing to not have power for at least 48 hours. Power lines and branches start going down with .25" of ice.

Not going to be fun.

What I hate is when the highway gets all froze up and it looks like icey mushrooms, don't know how else to describe it? But, it's pure treachery to drive it, even with chains.

This is a good place to pass this info: When driving at night in a blinding snowstorm; TURN ON YOUR INTERIOR LIGHTS, DOME LIGHT It's amazing! Remember this, next time. Thank me later!

Dome light huh ? Ok, I'll remember that !!

Hang tough guys. Ice sucks !! We've had some ourselves not like what they say is going to happen there. But, even 1/4" makes things tough.

Were supposed to get some more snow & freezing rain next week. We'll see, I guess.

(edit) Tim, I hear ya on the branches. I have three pine tress here by the house. The branches were snapping like twigs for awhile there. I have a hell of a stack out back to deal with, whenever the snow melts ?

Yes, do remember! You know, when the snowflakes are reflected back at you from your headlights, it's blinding, in a way. When ever, you can't see where you are going, until you turn on the dome light! It's miraculous, if you want my opinion. Maybe amazing?

Discovered by accident. We were driving somewhere, long drive divided highway in a blinding snowstorm. I think it might have been Utah or Wyoming cause I hardly ever get further east than that? Not that it matters.

But, after an hour of watching oncoming traffic, every once in a while we noticed somebody driving with their interior lights on. Huh? After an hour, and observing more dome lights than you would normally see in a week of night driving, we got the hint. Bingo! What a difference!

Everybody needs to be aware of this. It sure makes a difference.

I used to have a rental that plumbed the drain water from the washing machine out into the back yard, then moved it around occasionally. I guess the phosphates have nutrients? I never inquired if it was legal but there were inspections when I bought it and when I sold it and never a peep.

I have no lawn in the back, it's all concrete, cactus and lava. It's the front that suffered from the drought. Big time. Assholes!

Uh huh, it's been raining steady since I got up this morning. More "cabin fever" coming my way. People in SoCal do not go out in the rain if they can help it. They might melt.

Melt, Hell !!!!!
NOBODY in So. Cal. knows how to drive in the rain.
Vehicle fluids drip / leak onto the streets all summer long and the rains float it all up.
Fender-Bender city with everybody claiming "It was NOT my fault......I was driving the speed limit".

Don't know how I lived there as long as I did.

Ol'Dave A's end of the world has gotten crushed this winter. Thanks to Farwell Bend and the Snake River that area gets weather all seasons.

We set 3 records at Challis,-25, -30 and -31. We have 20-24" of snow on the flat around town.
100 plus head of elk and a ton of deer. But the twig munchers are going to take it in the shorts this winter. Already seeing deer starting to eat pine needles. Had a couple head of elk get into the place the other night and they found our stach of hay. They even walked into the dog kennel to get hay.
Even the jackrabbits have moved down out of the hills and living close to houses.

The dog is a woose and he sleeps inside by the wood stove.

We came down to the low land but it isn't any better than up country. Headed back up tomorrow after the doc appointment.

Ya'll take care down freeze, fall in the drink or a snow pile.

Yeah, I think that dog has it figured out !!

The winter is hard on game for sure. Payette just north of me had 50 antelope wander in to town & they ate some kind of shrub & it killed them. I'll have to see if I can find the link.

I'm figuring about 4 feet of total snowfall here. I'm a little fuzzy, took a nasty spill on the ice this morning. Doc says probably a mild concussion. I've about had enough..

(edit) here it is.

There is a surprising number of common landscape shrubs that are toxic to one degree or another. Houseplants too. Drinking ordinary paint can make you pretty sick, even insecticide.

It's a dangerous world out there.

Reading about all that snow and freezing weather makes me just chilled to the bone. Was out in just a shirt yesterday,71 degrees out, walking the property and found three differant species of mushrooms already popping up. I do not miss Nevada in the winter after being here for even the few months that I have. Can't wait for the morels to start popping up.
Saw some nice size bobcat tracks and an old coyote den down by our creek along with some coyote tracks. There is hope here for me yet for wacking a few predators. Brrrr record lows you say...BRRRR.

I missed the comment about three different mushrooms? I wouldn't know where to begin, other than the produce section at Stater Bros.

Walt, how do you tell for sure that you're not eating something that's going to destroy your liver? What are the odds? I mean it's like Asians, you know? They all look alike?

What is a "Morel" and what is it used for? Do you sprinkle them on your Wheaties, or are they fried, more like liver and onions? How about truffles? This is such secret stuff, nobody knows?

Leonard,
I only pick morels, oysters and shitakes to eat as I am familiar with them and they are very delicious when used in meals. And yes, one has to be very careful about just going out and eating mushrooms as you mentioned the liver, not to mention possibly actually dieing or even going on a trip as many of them contain psylociben which is somewhat like LSD and has been used through history by many peoples for religous enlightenment. Or just going on a trip and never leaving the ground.
I need a dictionary lol.....Walt

I can relate.

When I moved into this house Jan 1, 1975, I left a few boxes stacked in the garage. They were still there a year later, guess I didn't need that stuff as bad as I thought?

Then, there were some things I wished I HAD brought, like the heavy duty welding table, and some antique toys that I realized at a later date were quite valuable. Plus, all that gold I buried in the back yard, Yeah, wish I had dug it up, but it was too close to the bodies.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: did I tell you that I actually knew a guy that dug up buried treasure? Took him a while, but the old geezer that owned the land and gave him permission had totally forgot where he buried $10,000 in crisp new bills. Since it took him a year or so, if he was paid by the hour, it didn't do much more than cover expenses. (right here in Upland)

I've lost about a foot of snow in 48 hours. Amazing !!

Green grass around the house all of a sudden ? Pasture looks like it has mold ?

What saved us, is the ground never froze. Sucked up the snow-moisture, like a sponge..

Some minor flooding, could have been way worse. I don't hate winter, but, come on spring !!

Hell, we are in springtime conditions for more than a week, already. The pollen on my windshield was like mud when I turned on the squirters. Seems like the average temperature has swung at least ten degrees, lizards are out all over the place.

I don't have much use for California winters anyway. I think I can put the Adendum, (desert rose) back outside any day now.

Most exciting after dark, barefoot.

Did I ever tell you about the time I caught a small rattler with my bare hands? Yeah, I can't believe I did it, either. But, at the time, you know how that is? So, he was trying to get away from me and went up a slippery, sandy slope and was not making any headway, kind of like running up a down escalator? Or, maybe like he was on a treadmill but I was close and watching him struggle, but he was getting nowhere. I just reached out like as if I was catching a frog. I mean, I wasn't drunk or anything, and I was in my underwear, since I had just got up to take a piss.

Then, I let him go, just tossed him down the hill, which upon reflection might have been just as stupid since we were camped there a couple more days. I'm just as inclined to kill rattlers as to ignore them, depending on my mood.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: did I ever tell you about the time I was climbing a boulder incline and had to sling the rifle and use both hands? Well, there he was, on top of a flat rock, and me, between neck and chest height. I had to be very careful, but I unslung the gun nervously and smashed him with the butt end. I could have fallen at least ten feet by letting go of my handholds, but just got lucky. Believe me, it was the worst situation I was ever in, with a snake....but not by much. LB

So it was 75-80 this weekend here. Doing some routine yard work. I unraveled a waterhose from one of those stupid hose reels, and as it was turning..(rather fast cause I was pissed and in a hurry so I spun the shit out of it) for a split second in time I saw a black widow spider clinging to the hose, somewhere in the coil, weird..split second later she popped off of the spinning hose, and landed on the back of my right hand. Cool trick I thought. I think we were both stunned as a staredown ensued...then I flicked her off onto the ground and mashed her.

Adventure is where you find it I guess.

Wonder how Fred fared in New Yawk with the blizzard.

Crazy weather here in Kansas..80's to snow in the same week.

Supposed to be 90 here Sunday.

Never seen a Black Widow, but we have the nasty little Brown Recluse spiders that dissolve your skin and tissues.

Dumb question...can a Black Widow bite be fatal to a human??

Posted by Lone Howl (Member # 29) on March 16, 2017, 07:47 AM:

Yes you can. Most times I think it is not super serious but it can happen.

When I was a teen, I thought it was a good idea to race stock cars around a dirt track..and one evening at the races, a guy that was hanging out in the pits, where all the beer drinking was going on, went to use the (homemade) port a potty, and I do not know what this guy did, but he was bitten by a black widow...on the tip of his penis...and damn near died. He was so sick and in so much pain for weeks he wished he was dead. Ill never forget that, so wierd.

I hate spiders.

My opinion is the bite and the poison is overrated. But, as when a person has some type of allergic reaction to a bee or wasp sting, it can and (probably) has happened.

That's a bazaar (sp) story, Mark.... I don't know?

Tim, the storm dodged west & spared the island. Maybe we got 6-8" of snow, tops, with a changeover to sleet. Made for kind of a mess when it all froze over. If you didn't shovel/plow before the freeze, it'd be a hard time of things...

Talked to our farmer neighbor upstate, they got 3 friggin' feet!!!

P.S. I got a brown spider bite on my hand, about 18yrs ago. Wound up it got infected & my hand swelled up like a catcher's mitt! Came very close to being admitted to the hospital, but a few injections of Rocephin kicked in & did the trick. After the swelling finally went down, about 1/3 of the skin off the backside of my hand peeled off...

Got bit on the inside of the right leg calf by a Hobo spider. By night it was burning and the around the bit was decaying(didn't know it at the time). Anyway one doc looked at it and gave me some so so antibiotics. Didn't do much.
They reopened our clinic and got a gun ho PAC and she numbed it up opened the bit up to make sure there wasn't a pocket of poison in there. Put me on some wicked pricey antibiotics and slowly got over it. Still have the brown scar the size of a nickel. Be careful of moving wood piles. Hobo's related to Brown Recluse. I reacted to the bite.

When I was little, my dad was stationed at George Army Air Corps Base in Adelanto. So, I was about 2 or 3? Anyway, I used to go out it the desert and fight japs, according to my mother. Apparently, in those days, they never thought that anybody would harm a kid, and they didn't.

But she said that I used to get black widow bites all the time while out playing under the oleanders. Apparently, black widows love our ubiquitous freeway ornamental shrubs?

Anyway, they say I must have antibodies and if somebody has an acute reaction, that I could be an effective donor. But, since then, I don't believe I have been bitten.

Nope, no special powers Mark, LOL!

It happened down in South Carolina, on a hunting trip. Seems I made things ALOT worse, after 'popping' the inflamed bite wound as if it were a pimple. Doc mentioned that was not a smart move!
Went to hospital down there, and straight back to ER after driving back home. In those 12-14 hrs, started to get purple tracks running up my wrist, which is a sign of septicemia. Hence, almost being admitted...

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on March 17, 2017, 06:33 AM:

Well, that's probably what I would have done? Excising an infected wound is usually an effective homebrew solution and I'm pretty sure the medical profession would disagree. They have inordinate faith in antibiotics to cure, and if that don't work they shrug and pull the sheet over your head.

quote:
septicemia
I assume means blood poisoning? I had it as a kid when I kicked a rusty spear barb in the shin and ignored it until I had a fever. It didn't bleed much and that was the problem. The treatment was borax solution poured onto a gauze patch to keep the wound from scabbing so it would heal from the inside....or something? But I had the red tracer lines up my leg, etc. Of course, I still have a scar that looks a bit like a bullet hole.

Good hunting. El Bee
