But, should I ever find myself in Indiana, I will be careful.
Actually, I spent a night in Indiana, once. Right in the middle of the Ford Falcon Convention, which I didn't know about, beforehand. It seemed an event taylor made for Indiana. In California, they could have held it in a phone booth.

Just like every other aspect of the legal system in this country, you'll most likely be able to get all the justice you can afford. And if you can't afford much, tough shit.
My sister's BIL got gunned down in his home by SLCPD. Middle of the night, "no knock" kicked his door in. He came out of his bedroom into the hall in his underwear with empty hands and was immediately shot multiple times. Turns out it was the wrong house too, of course.
Anyway... Long story. Has contributed greatly to my general distrust and even fear of law enforcement. They - the police dept., did everything they could do deny justice. Hell, they did everything they could to make sure he died before he could even talk to anyone. Posted guards at the hospital and would not even let his parents in to talk to him.
My sister is a pretty mean attorney. It was only her efforts that got the parents in to talk to their son in the hospital.
Police department, denied and lied about everything. Destroyed evidence. The whole nine yards. Went as far as they possibly could, completely ignoring the law to cover their ass and protect the bastards who shot him.
The family was getting nowhere, at all, until Jerry Spence (that Jerry Spence) took the case (my sister at work again). Then all the sudden, the dept. started to "cooperate". Sort of.
Upshot of it all was a seven figure settlement out of court and as far as I know absolutely zero punishment for the cops. Nothing. Nadda. Zippo. Off scott free. Taxpayers picked up the settlement and all related expenses.
Sad but true. In going about my daily affairs, I am far, far, FAR more afraid of what some random cop might do to fuck up my life than I am of some random criminal. Actually, I don't have any fear of criminals. Cops scare the fuck out of me.

That's a hell of a story, Dave.
I don't blame anyone for having a hard on for L.E. It's really hard to weed out the Rambos, and they BY GOD, protect those of the Brotherhood, no matter what.
This "wrong house" bullshit is way too common. Then, the wrong house, you have to wonder exactly what the big deal was? Parking tickets?
But, the militarization of local law enforcement is truly getting out of hand. I am so sick of the Federal alphabet SWAT teams! Way too many of those guys hanker for the action.
My idea of a police officer is like Rich Cronk, rest his soul. He never seemed to let the badge go to his head and called a spade a spade. Too bad it's uncommon, these days.

There was a story a few years ago of a PA man who shot & killed an LEO over his dogs.
LEO was responding to a 911 call, and was confronted by the homeowner.
Homeowner attempted to deny entrance of LEO, without a warrant.
Homeowner's dogs were present and barking at LEO, doing what dogs do to protect their home/family.
LEO called his superior on radio, who instructed LEO on scene to "shoot the dogs".
Upon hearing the imminent threat to his dogs lives, the homeowner reacted preemptively, and shot & killed LEO with a shotgun.

That's a little too radical for my tastes. Why not just get the drop on the cop with the shotgun. It takes a very brave or very foolish man to do anything with a shotgun leveled at his gut.
But, the story doesn't say what happened to the homeowner? My WAG is he was dealt harshly?
What's the guy, Nixon aide who suggested shooting a cop wearing a bullet-proof vest? Shoot him in the head! He was roundly condemned for his accurate advice.

Taking a human life, over that of an animal, is a stretch.
Tried to put myself in that dude's position, and hear it come over LEO's radio that he has the OK to shoot my dog, on my property, in front of me. Can't say what how I'd react, but can't see myself just letting that happen, either...
Appears to be one of those lose/lose situations where an agreeable resolution cannot be achieved in the heat of the moment.
Cops know that dogs don't give a flying fawk about "command voice", so I reckon its easier to shoot em, over potentially gettin' chewed on. As if, these dogs are the killer rabbit from Monty Python's Holy Grail?
Did you see the <7 lb. lap dog in the video that was gunned down on its porch, after "attacking" an officer?
How does one justify deadly force against a canine that can barely break skin with a bite???
