Been away from hunting and shooting for most of the last couple years. Just lately been dragging my lazy butt out to shoot my coyote rifles a bit and do a little hunting.

I think I'd like to trade off a Vortex PST MRAD 6-24 SFP due to they don't do very well in low light. This scope replaced the exact same one that was 4-16. I was looking for more magnification at the time, either way neither are near as bright as a Bushnell 4200 6-24X I had before them.

So I really just want the exact same features just better in low light. I'll have to watch for a used one of what ever I pick. I paid $700 used for the Vortex which at the time was probably a $1000 scope. I can go to a higher quality scope but would prob try to get one used.

I had my rifles out this week and my old B&L 4000 2.5x10 was brighter at low light.

Well, you have the answers already. It's really not in the cards that a high magnification variable will show good light transmission unless we are speaking in terms of relativity. At least, I am unaware of a scope above about 16X that is really useful at night or under low light conditions; dusk and dawn.

Personally, I have a Leupold 4.5X14 that seems to bridge the gap between high magnification and good light transfer. In fact, I think that 12X is just about the upper limit if you want to see targets in poor visibility; ie/night.

My best night scope is a 3X12X56 Kahles. I think the Euros had this shit figured out a long time ago. In the world, there are not many makers of the best night optics, but there are a lot of pretty good ones.

If you think you need something like 6X24 or so, you won't get optimum performance, even if it had a large objective and you dial it down to 12X. Every scope is some type of compromise. And, like assholes, everybody has an opinion.

Good hunting. El Bee

Well we aren't allowed to night hunt but at 1/2 hour before sunrise things are pretty dark and that's when we can hunt. For calling it's no big deal because I just adjust my power magnification down for lower light. This scope is on a 22-243win and shooting off a long range(to me) bait. I used the 4-16X to shoot at 815 but I was wanting to see if I could knock a coyote over past 1000yds.
The 4-16X is on a 17-204 and it's fine for calling except the size of the scope is physically a little big looking on the Rem LVSF.

Maybe there isn't a scope with slightly better light gathering in that power range with illum reticle and target turrets but I'm pretty sure my 4200 6-24X was quite a bit better. Just wondering what's out there that might work.

The Kahles and Leopold sound like great scopes. Is there a VX3 in that power range that I could get turrets added on. I've cranked that 4-16X up and down a lot and it always returns to zero. Are VX3 level leupolds good for dialing?
