Been on my knees scrapping up brass flung all over the place and it's time to develop my own custom loads. Normally, I don't bother loading auto pistol rounds until I have enough to make it worthwhile. Not quite there yet. But now, I might not have to wait so long if the good fairy comes through?

So, good price? Best dies? What we got out there. Don't tell me about your Jim Dandy Lee dies. <gag>

Thanks and Good hunting. El Bee

shit, today would have been a good one, lots of rain to keep me chicken cooped.

edit: I don't really care about 10MM/40S&W combo dies, it's highly unlikely I will ever need 10MM dies.

While we're at it, how about suggestions on a clean burning, but efficient propellant for 40S&W?

Also, I seem to recall somebody with an opinion concerning bullet weight, don't like 105 grain?

So, what's the best, all around bullet for this cartridge? Best for what, you may ask? Fair question. Just "best" for the most applications. 165 grain seems to be one that the ammunition folks are loading, I see it more than others. Is there a very good reason?

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: and don't be in a rush to reply [Roll Eyes] we got all day, and then some!

I have shot everything available, 105, 155, 165, 175 and forget what else? Why does everything end in 5?

LB,
You will not let me comment on Lee dies, [Big Grin] , so I will ask you this question...

You have the M&P Shield, right?

How do you like it? I wanted someone's opinion on the gun before I took the plunge for my carry gun.

I am trying to decide between the 9 or the .40 for carry.

To clarify; I did not mean to censor anyone in the Peanut Gallery from raving about Lee dies. I was only wishing to economize on the process because I have zero interest in Lee dies, no matter how much they might be loved by others.

So, what was the question? Yes, I really like my M&P Shield! Kind of hard to explain but it goes off with attention getting authority, maybe more than a 45ACP? Accuracy seems more than adequate, too.

But, as a firearm, it is kinda like a cross between a watch and a can opener, I can't explain it. Like I said before, it's put together with roll pins rather than screws. Oh, by the way, the lower half is some type of thermonuclear plastic?

It comes with two different magazines, (both inline) and I have not decided which one is best suited for my needs? One holds 6 and the other, 7 rounds. So, that's what it is, a carry gun where you should be able to conceal it rather nicely.

I am glad that I picked the 40 over 9mm. But, it was really a no brainer, I never considered the 9 even a little. Why? More authority in that compact package, that's it.

As with any firearm, it all depends on your mission. I think the Shield fills a gap in my modest little arsenal. Maybe my opinion will mellow, on down the road, but for now, it's a cool little piece with substantial authority; I said that before but that's my half baked impression until things change.

Thanks!

Smith and Wesson gives NRA instructors a discount, and I think I can get the Shield in either caliber for $320.00 delivered to my FFL.

I am going to pair it with a Sneaky Pete holster and use that for my carry rig.

good deal, I guess? California always rapes the customer. I paid $439. plus $25 for a safety certificate. Hey, the state is just fine, it's the assholes that run the place that are the problem.

I've been carrying a Shield now everyday for a few years. I really like it. The short mag is best for deep concealment and the longer mag is best for shooting.

I have the model without any manual safety and highly reccomend it. That little manual safety they stick on there is hard to manipulate under pressure.

Carrying daily in the Oklahoma heat and it will rust or pit a little if you don't stay on top of it. I rusted the mag release shut on my other one. I now have a kydex holster from PJ holsters that covers the release. Just keep it wiped down and it'll be fine.

As for dies Dillon are the best and they are free. Just buy a Square Deal progressive press and get to loading.

Crikie, Tom, I was just about to send you an engraved invitation!

Just kidding. But, nope. I'm not that hardcore, do not need a Dillon. Shit, I'd have to set it up in my living room! Truthfully, no room in my shop for that rig. Bench space wise.

But, I really agree on the overall utility of the Shield. I actually can't decide on the magazines? I could carry the longer one.

Of course, I have been thinking of Redding dies, Dillon kinda slips under my radar, because I'm not a high volume shooter. But, not opposed either.

I really like Redding rifle dies but have only RCBS pistol dies. Carbide of course. I'm sure even Lee dies would work fine too though.

I found some mag plate extensions that look like they might work great on the short mags but no one has them in stock. I'll look again and try to post a link.

I will remind you though that I advised everyone to ditch the 40 and go 9mm. I'm proud to report at least the FBI listened to me...

First of all, I readily admit that you talked up 9mm. The only impression I got out of that was mild surprise, it sure wouldn't and didn't affect my choice. Just one of those things, I don't care for 9mm. Like Toyota's, I can't give logical reasons, just don't like 'em.

One suggestion you offered was about Uplulu's. I now have two if them. Really, I'm not sure that I can actually fill those magazines without them, that last one is a bitch!

I'm still not convinced that the FBI has a valid reason for switching to 9mm? It could be a bone thrown to politically correct feminism, or something like that? Lots of girl "Special Agents" you know? And that degrades the whole team, just as it does Navy Seals and Delta Force, etc.

I'm a male chauvinist pig. So, sue me; but girls can't cut it.

I now have 2 45's and 2 44's so I can relate but I have 3 9's too. I am crushed though that my blabbering had no effect on your purchase.

ah contraire, mon cheri! Your blabbering is always special!
To me.

But, don't push it. Nines are whack.

Well, I just placed an order with Natchez. Got Lyman 4 die carbide set. Was the only four die set I was able to locate?

Never owned Lyman before but for $68 versus $93 for Redding 3 die carbide, I don't care if I'm getting primo Redding dies for a Shield? BFD.

I would have got the Hodgdon's Longshot with it but just about choked! The hazmat fee on $21 one pound of powder is now $30? Fuck that, I will buy local, somehow some where?

I like Dillon dies the best. You can take them apart without changing the settings which is important it shooting waxed lead bullets. However, they don't come with a belling did because Dillon does that with the the powder funnel. Dillons drop powder and bell at the same time.

My favorite small pistol powder is win 231

I might add that Dillon Rifle Size dies are set up so you can use the depriming rod to push a stuck case out. They sell them in a three die set with a taper crimp die.

Dies arrived yesterday, prob need to adjourn to the shop and get to work? I have never loaded 500 rounds at one time, these are reasons why peeps buy progressives, I guess? Another thing, I don't have that many boxes all the same; this batch is going to look like a mess, as far as uniformity of packaging.

I also need to tear myself away from the precision mindset. I didn't even chamfer the flash holes, Yike!

Pistols is where a progressive shines. I recently knocked out over 1,000 rounds of 45 on my dillon 650 working approximately 40 min per day for three days.

I load rifle in multiple stages on the dillon. The first step is inspection which is off the dillon. The second step I deprime, resize, trim, and expand the neck out all at the same time using the Dillon 650. I have tool heads with a depriming die set up on station 1, a trim die on station 3 and a lyman M die on station 5. I can run about 500 rounds an hour thru the dillon. After cleaning the brass to remove sizing lube, I then clean the primer pockets and debur the necks using an RCBS Case Prep center.

If I'm loading a known charge using ball powder I only have to run the cases thru the dillon to prime, drop powder, seat the bullet, and taper crimp the neck.

If I'm loading stick powder I prime using the Lee Auto primer if I'm only loading a few say less than 100 rounds. If I'm doing more than 100 rounds I will run them through the dillon and seating the primers only. I will then weigh the charges with two Pact powder dispensers and scales with the cases in loading blocks. Inspect for squid or over charges. Next I put the charged case on station 4 and seat the bullet. Taper crimp on 5. I just hand tighten taper crimp down onto a deburred case for adjustment. This way if I want to make bulk plinking ammo I don't bother to debur trimed cases and the taper crimp crimps the burr down to flush.

Man, this is a crock. Small case. My back started bothering me at 350, maybe I need a progressive?

I suddenly remembered that this press can be converted to progressive with the application of $. Something to think about.

What's that, man of few words? Is that a Dillon, I think?

I'm being dragged, kicking and screaming into the realm of hi volume pistolero. Please Mr Custer, I don't want to go!

It's a conundrum, is that the word? Make lots of ammo on my $600 progressive so I can bang away on paper, plastic and steel? Then clean the bitch. Then pull the lever, crank it out, buy Somores. Make an already expensive hobby, you know?

Well, back out to the shop....

El Bee !!!!
What are you doing ????
You're in Calif, remember ??
Doesn't Gov. MoonBeam & Di Fi limit you to possession of like, three live rounds ?????
And not all at one time, either !!!!

So far as I know, that only applies to transporting? I think the empty cases, (3) need to be stored in the trunk with the bullets in the concealed weapon compartment, (glove box) with the powder in a locked container, under the hood. (with permit)

I don't trifle with governor moonbeam; he don't fuck around!

You AZ peeps always act so superior!

Well, yeah.
It's one of the perks listed on our gold embossed Arizona Man Cards.
You DO get state issued Man Cards in Calif.
Yes ???

Ya it's a Dillon, pistol rounds only and can be had for just over $300 one complete set of dies included. (It does use specialized dies and can't use standard.)

Posted by Aznative (Member # 506) on March 09, 2016, 12:32 PM:

The Square Deal is so cheap, you just buy another complete press so you never have to perform a caliber change.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on March 09, 2016, 01:52 PM:

Sure, might as well get two, while I'm at it? No, if I was a shooter, I'm sure it would be the way to go. However, my classification is rather limited. Hunter, not shooter, not gun nut.

I'm just not a range rat. If I don't have load testing to do, development, etc., you won't see me merrily banging away. So, I miss out on the all important "practice", but I save time and money.

So, we will see? So far, I don't seem to enjoy it that much? And, the combat shit never interested me, either.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: forgot to mention, I'm loaded-finally! So, I will probably be driving up to the range one of these days to see how they work. What do you guys look for, as far as a taper crimp? I just went with incrementally, the diameter of the body. it worked out to 1.127".

I know a guy who has one set up for large primers and one set up for small primers, along with a few caliber conversions. [Wink]

I suppose I could move the toaster and crockpot off the kitchen counter? Put them in a cabinet and mount one of them "jim dandy" square deals? Small and large primer set up, is a strong argument for going all in. [Roll Eyes]

I will sleep on it. LB

I check the taper crimp by running the pad of my thumb down, from bullet to case body. When setting taper crimp I keep turning down until thee is a noticeably smooth transition, without feeling the abrupt edge of the case mouth....pretty precise shit ehh Leonard?

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on March 10, 2016, 06:09 AM:

Yes, very precise. Okie, I mean, okay. I think I might have squished enough, in that case. This 40S&W is all different, to me? kind of "exotic" you know?
