Ok, were all talking handguns lately.
I admit, I really don't know shit about 'em. Weird huh ? I'm thinking about starting the search for a good used Ruger. Always kinda fashioned myself as a Ruger sort of guy.
Just thinking along the lines of a home/camp gun. What model does one look for ? Blackhawk ?

I think the 44Mag Alaskan is a lot of gun for the money. Super Redhawk.
I have two Rugers, a stainless 357, called (I think) a police special, fixed sights. It belonged to my father so I will never get rid of it, even if I wanted to. Which I don't.
The other is a 44Mag Redhawk with a 7 1/2" barrel. It's a real comfortable piece to shoot, compared to the 357. But then again, those are some pretty stiff loads in the 357. So, for dinking around, I much prefer 38Special.
My opinion is Ruger revolvers are pretty much bulletproof.

I'm a Smith fan but have owned a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk, a GP100 and an SP101, all were solid guns but heavy.
For a home/camp gun I think a 44 mag fits the bill. Especially if you ever want to hunt with it. My favorite is of course the S&W Mountain Gun.

I'm not knowledgeable at all, but the one in the lower right with the wood grips looks to be a Colt? The rest of them all happen to be laid on the wrong side to see the cylinder lock. A couple of them are real old timers, like he stole them from the trick shot guy, Ed something?
But, prune picker looks to be the guy who's opinion you could trust, based on the evidence.

I've never been much of a trader. For the most part, if I buy it, it stays. As a matter of fact, I think I've only traded or sold 2 guns my whole life!!
And I seriously regret one of those...
I bought it new,...probably about 1994ish...
I wanna say,...somewhere around $400-$450 + or -
.44 magnum Colt Anaconda. I just saw one for sale the other day!! I don't remember exactly,...but I think $1200 thereabouts.
Are they really worth that? Or, I guess maybe the better question is, do they really bring that much?
Talk about sellers remorse!!

There are some Colts (revolvers)in the pile, a Python, Trooper& I have a New Service on another shelf. A couple of my "K" frame S&W's (my favorites)with some "N"frame 44's that I oiled today. I honestly cant tell you how many I own but for what it's worth I have other types of handguns.

Duck Dog, I think the reason is, they don't make them anymore. All the old Factory Colt Revolver guys are gone. Smith & Wesson isn't as bad but they're using MIM parts that work but could be better. Use to be a guy could call the S&W factory and order parts & get them in a week or so, last fall I ordered some pin's and a rear sight blade that's still on back order.

Dave, as Tom has said and I agree, don't overlook the M629 Mountain Gun in 44 Mag. They have made them in 41 Mag & 45 Colt also in both Stainless & Blue but I prefer a single action in 45 because the case rim is so small it can slip under the extractor star when ejecting empty's.

While you're taking your time deciding, consider the .41 Mag.
It has a lot of the advantages of the .44 and the recoil of a .357.
One other option, just to make your choice even harder;
Ruger .30 Carbine.
Great for plinking around camp and more gas than a .22 if you need it.

Dave if your budget tells you so there's nothing wrong with a Ruger Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk. The last time I looked a Super Blackhawk 44 (new) could be had for less than 500.00$, S&W revolvers seem to be about twice that or more and I haven't handled many Ruger Redhawk('s) but if they're typical Ruger they will work just fine.
Koko have you hunted any with the 30 cal Ruger? I've never handled or fired one and always wondered. I have a 41 mag Blackhawk and really like the weight difference vs. the Super Blackhawk plus the fact it has a 4 3/4" vs the "then" std 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk.

Never hunted with the .30.
A buddy of mine had one back in the day when you could almost buy ammo by the pound.
We would go out shooting and that thing was a blast to shoot.
He had a big handlebar mustache and a cowboy hat. I got an awesome photo of him firing right at sunset; flame coming out the barrel and sides.
Luckiest shot I made all day !!!

hard to go wrong with a super blackhawk in 44 mag. Mine had a 10" barrel and cut it down to 5.5" in 1980 or so to carry it better horse back.
Dad has a 41mag and he has hell finding cartridges for it.

What Kelly said, hard to find ammo for the 41 mag. I was up in OKC the other day @ Academy Sports they had 1 box of Rem 210gr S.P. 50 ct. @ 74.00$ I just about fell over! 44 mag box of 50 was 54.00$ still outrageous but no heart stoppage. If I didn't reload there is no way I could afford to shoot, thankfully I hoarded brass & bullets when the gettin was good.

Thanks for the heads up on 41 ammo dudes. Went to a gun shop for lunch yesterday and sure enough they had a 41.
Handled a Varquero I think that's what they call it ? in 357 it sure felt sweet. The guy said you should only shoot cowboy loads in it though ?
They had a used stainless 44 with ivory grips, just not my look. Oh' well the pursuit of something new is half the fun..

Dave the Vaquero is built on the original Colt Single Action size frame w/ fixed sights. The regular Blackhawk is slightly larger in every direction and beefier so in theory you can shoot hotter loads that some think are required to be a man. If you're going to shoot factory 38spl and or factory 357mag type loads including reloads the Vaquero will last a long time as long as you follow the recommended load data.
In the pic Thomas posted for me look to the very top, of all my handguns that 38spl w/ a 2" bl gets used for about 99% of all my handgun needs. I load a 158gr lead semi wad cutter hollow point @ 900fps, doesn't hurt my ears and is fun to shoot.

Well, I always am thinking, when I see a collection of firearms, that the reason must have something to do with something besides an actual utilitarian need. A collector, perhaps? Real "investment" scenario: or another reason I cannot fathom?
So, you have short 38 Special for 99% of "handgun needs"? Like some of these guys that have way more hand calls than they will ever need. I guess it is like collecting money, can't ever have too much, unless Obama has anything to say about it?
I have more rifles than I actually "need". It's a matter of attrition. Unlike Victor, I don't get rid of stuff that I have lost interest in. I just stack them to the back, where they can rightfully be called safe queens.
So, why does a guy have 15/20 revolvers, not to mention all those pistols we have been hearing about. Conclusion: you are a COLLECTOR! To be envied by us working class stiffs.
I need to be careful, since I have bought three handguns since Christmas. I have no room to talk. Slippery slope.

I am a S&W revolver whore there I said it! I was buying them before it was legal for me to do so. Can you believe my mother & father were signing the paperwork so a snot nosed kid could hunt and shoot handguns! Back then it was illegal to hunt deer with a handgun but I did it anyways, that's why mention of predator & varmint hunting has always made me smile, nobody cared what firearm I was using.

Guess I am getting to the party late here, but I will add my .02. Started off my handgun experience with a .357 Ruger Blackhawk in 1980, and really loved it. LIke Prune Picker, I had to have my mom fill out the paperwork.
Worst ‘mistake’ I made was having my now wife and then fiancé shoot it before we were married—she adopted it as hers, and still refers to it as ‘her gun’.
I bought a 5 ½” SS .44 Mag Ruger Blackhawk some years back. It turned out to be an extremely accurate, solid gun. It actually would chronograph higher velocities than my M-629 8 3/8” Smith…never could figure that one out—guess it locked up tighter. Traded it for another Ruger—an M-77 in .22 Hornet…not the brightest moment in my life.
I own 2 S&W wheelguns, and 3 Rugers…the Smith DA’s look sexier, but the Rugers are workhorses—I’d own another in a minute!
