So a year or two ago, I remember a big hoopla raised over Fred Eichler using FMJ's when hunting coyotes. Best fur bullet, according to him. Well, I guess it turns out that he's not alone in his thinking. Thumbing through my latest Cabelas GUNSPORTS mag., I read this in the ammo. selection guide under the Predator/varmint hunting column, "The bullets you use when predator or varmint hunting should depend on the goal of your hunt. If you're hunting for furs, using FMJ bullet is the best option. FMJ's punch very small holes in an animal's hide. However, tracking the animal may take longer, as less internal damage will occur."
Huh, and here I thought a single hole in without exit and lots of internal damage, and no tracking, was a better option. I'm still learning I guess. [Roll Eyes]

TR, as far back as the 60's I can provide part#'s for FMJ bullets from Speer, Sierra, & Hornady with the recommendation "for use on fur". The only FMJ bullets I use in a rifle are M193 5.56x45 (.223) in my AR's, because I have a box or two. Just my opinion but I would only use a FMJ when fur hunting "IF" there was snow on the ground, lots of snow or hunting big game that would stomp and or eat me.

Well Mike, it looks like it's Hornady that is still thinking the same way they did back then, because the ammo. guide is pretty much all about Hornady, and their bullets.

TR, I was looking thru a couple of old reloading books and found this from Speer #8,
"In 1965 the company introduced the Silver Match bullet, an ultra-precision target bullet lightly plated with nickel. Strictest quality control is maintained during it's production. So rigid is the inspection, Speer Silver Match bullets are available only in limited quantities".
The article then continues to say... Showing a picture of a 10 shot, 200 yard group.
"Here is the actual size reproduction of the WORLD RECORD 10 SHOT GROUP shot by Alan Bench of Yakima Washington. Shooting Speer Silver Match Bullets Al recorded a registered 100 yard group measuring .143", August !5, 1964 at Seattle Washington".
TR, I posted that because at that time there were some who thought a FMJ bullet was capable of better accuracy than a Hollow Point.

Anybody wanting to use FMJ on fur might want to check their Regs first.
Not legal to hunt with in all states.

I guess I don't see the problem. One time, I was hunting deer with my bow and using field tips. Well,....... [Frown] Oh, I get it now. But, in their defense, there will be more tracking. Like, for the rest of that coyote's natural life, or until someone with the right ammo shoots it out from under you.

Damn, looks like the coyotes have finally banded together, hired one of them Washington lobbyists and changed the rules of engagement for us guys to be consistent with the Geneva Convention…who da’ thunk it!
