What's everyones opinion? I am going to replace my 265-70R-17's GoodYear Wrangler AT/S tires on my Tahoe. These have been pretty good tires, BTW.
I drive 90+ % of the time on pavement, So I am not really looking for rock crawling or hvy 4x4 action, but the occasional off road tires.
Opinions?

Well, I bought 4 Hankooks, 285x36 for the price of 3 Goodrich's. So far, no complains. Available from Pep Boys, a rebate deal and the check arrived about a week later, not months later like some deals. You could do worse. I have had some catastrophic failures with Goodrich, BTW.

You have had catastrophic failures with the BF Goodrich's? I was giving serious thought to the BFG AT KO's or such.

Been rollin' on E-rated Cooper AT/3s for the last 40k. M+S rated, reasonably priced and tough. They handle real well in the wet, but I've noticed they ain't as great in the snow with 40k of tread wore off. First two winters they were excellent in the snow and mud.
Very quiet on road for the first 25k, but have grown a nice hum in the last year. This set will get me thru this winter and warm season. Before next winter, will replace these with a fresh set of AT/3s. Have had BFG and Nitto Terra Grapplers, like these AT/3s the best...

I picked up some Cooper E rated tires for my Super Duty last Fall. No complaints so far on the snow and ice. My trucks pushes snow very well with them too. Discount Tire Direct had good prices and fast/free shipping on them.

I've always been a Cooper fan as well. I change out for winter to the Blizzak's though. If you have to drive on nasty, icy roads, the Blizzak's are king of the road.

My hunting bud has a brother who works for and partly owns a company in the NoDak oil fields.Can't remember all the details but they have many trucks that travel on and off road a lot.(awful LOT)After lots of experience and testing they decided on General 'Grabbers'for mileage,highway quietness and economy.
I bought a set for my Tundra and was very pleased.Good off road but also very quiet on road.Also were cheaper than what I had been using and looking at.

Dan, don't take this wrong, but if you've been happy with the AT/S, you ought to be crazy with joy with just about anything else.
Just my opinion, based on quite a bit of experience, but to me, those AT/S are garbage.
I've had catastrophic failures with BFG's too. More than with any other brand. But that's only because I have run them more than any other brand. I've had the most catastrophic failures per mile with GY Wranglers AT/S. I swear, I don't think I've ever had a set of those wear out before gashing out a sidewall or having a Snapple cap go right through the tread face. They get stuck on a piece of wet toilet paper too. Fuckin' hate those tires...
That said... I'm running GY Duratracs on my new truck and love them so far. Too agressive for what you are describing though. Ditto for the MT/R's, I really like the old style ones, but they don't make 'em anymore (I don't care for the new Kevlar's) and they'd be too agressive anyway.
I ran several sets of Cooper's a long time ago, was pretty "meh" about them. Discount Tire pushes them hard, so prices can be good (that's why I ran them when I did), most guys do seem pretty happy with them too. And it's not like I was "unhappy" with them, just wasn't ever all that in love with them either is all.
Almost hate to say it, because they haven't done a gawd damn thing to them in about 20 years while the rest of the tire world seems to be improving stuff constantly, but the BFG AT/KO is probably the best all around for what you describe, IMO.
Bang for the buck, I'm running a set of Falken Wild Peaks on my daily driver. I've been half assed amazed at how well they perform for the price. Kind of heavy and homely looking though.
Few guys around here running the newest Dunlop's, giving them rave reviews. I might try them next.

Well Dave you got me laughing a little on that last reply. I just got back from the tire store and had them remove a nail I picked up in AZ and plug the tire. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
In all fairness, these GY AT/S tires have 63000 on them.
Discovered I need to replace at least 2 of the TPMS do-wacky-doo's also.

Nope can't blame Okie-land. One trip to SE AZ, I had to fix 4 flats, from thorns, nails, and such, and replace one tire that blew out on a gravel road from a rock puncture.
Good God though, those people in OK City are freaking lunatics, well maybe just the ones driving on the highways.

I don't remember those Gates, but they couldn't have been any louder than the Armstrong Miracle Traction were they?
Which, now that I think about it, even those Armsrong's were pretty quiet compared to just about any Swamper - Bogger, TSL, TBL, TRxus, ThornTURD they're all loud as hell. Not very round, either...

Don't remember Gates? Hmm? Might have been before your time? Bias ply tires might not roll round for the first 100 miles, but seemed like I got less flats than with radials?

10-4 good buddy. My dad was a CB junkie back in the 70's. Had the ginormous crank up (later electric) tower on the house, giant linear amps with the glass tubes...the whole bit. Souped up radios in the trucks as well. Our neighbors hated us, when pops started talking it bled all over thier tv's and radios.

Guess you'll have to take the word of us old scudders. Commandos were plenty loud, but even they paled to my Monster Mudders. Those tires pretty much wore out the front end and drive train on my 1/2 ton Chivy.

How about the old Goodyear Suburbanite XG tires. I went a lot of places, most that I shouldn't have, with them on my CJ 5.

Very familiar with needing to warm up the bias plies too. Ran many a set of them. Those Swampers are out of round right out of the mold though. Traction like crazy. Tough like crazy. Suck ass on the highway like crazy.

I remember saving up my paper route money as a kid and dreaming at the local Radio Shack store for the Uniden CB, whip antenna roof mount brace, and 110-->12V power supply to get my 'base station' set up!
Our little 'crew' of bmx maniacs all had CBs at our houses and we'd BS on channel 23 for a spell each night. Our parents wouldn't let us on the phone for more than a minute, so you could say the CB radio was 'social media' for us at the time, LOL!
I remember getting a 'mosquito' linear amp, then a more powerful one to "step on" other CB'ers. Experienced the same TV warpage as Mark explained, so had to cut the power back down. Good times!
Got a little CB mounted in my truck, where my pullout ashtray used to be. Use it all the time for bullshit sesssions when roadtrippin' up to the farm & what-not. Also, the CB is good for a laugh to catch the truckers on 19 breakin' each other's ballz in traffic around the city!!!
