I'm interested too. I will share which one I am currently in favor of these days. It is the Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp. I run a short trap line each year, and have found a headlamp is a must have for me since I check and skin before heading to my real job. This is the one I used this season for checking my line and skinning before work. I am very pleased with it. It has two power settings and I mostly just use the low setting. The high setting is bright enough to actually shine eyes with in a hunting situation if needed, but I have other tools for that so I don't normally use that setting. It looks and feels like cheap plastic and doesn't seem all that tough, but mine has taken some lickings and is still ticking, so I have no complaints.

There is also a pretty good YouTube video on it that someone has done that explains all the features. It does some other cool stuff that I don't use.

I run a pretty good trap line every year and skin most everything in the field if possible. I have a skinning rig welded to the front of my truck. I have used a Black Diamond Storm headlamp for the last couple of years and been really happy with it. I recently purchased a Sparks ST-6 480 in nw and think its a pretty good light as well but until I use it for a couple of seasons can't say how well it's going to hold up to hard use.

Anyone ever heard of Zebralights???

Just took delivery on THIS ONE. It runs a Cree LED on a single AA battery, same as my GPS, where the Petzl runs on 3,AAAs. The focused flood throw on full power is INSANELY bright, and has selectable intensity for saving battery life. Can use as a stand alone mini-torch, or with the headband for hands free use...
Gotta say, this little Zebralight has it all over the Petzl. Gotta put it through its paces to see what kind of burn time can be expected, and how durable it is, but the light weight and exceptional brightness (when needed) is incredible!

I use the older version of that Fred, the H51. You pretty much nailed it. Durable, tough, light weight, bright, long lasting. Lacks bells and whistles, but for my purposes, I don't miss them.

Old thread I know... Headlamps haven't replaced flashlights for me but I use them almost as much. I run with a Princeton Tec Fuel light that uses AAA batteries. It gives me enough light and is hardly noticeable when running.

But I hate AAA batteries and have a good supply of CR123's, I use them in my flashlights and range finder so I wanted a headlight that used em as well. So I've been using this one http://www.streamlight.com/en-us/product/product.html?pid=55 and I like it.

In case anyone else likes the CR123's.

Just curious guys, if you were buying again would you buy the same light's again? I have an old, at least 10 yrs old Princeton AAA powered headlamp that works great except the elastic in the strap has gone limp (my only gripe). Like Tom, I like using CR123 batteries & LED lamps in my lights when I find the CR123 batteries @ bulk rate prices.

I would. Zebralights has one that uses a CR123 that is basically just like Fred's, which is a newer version of mine.

Change of subject...

I actually started this thread to post about an LED lamp I mounted on a telescoping pole off the back of my rig - lights up a whole area and gets the light up in the air so it doesn't blind you when you face it. LED, so it doesn't suck down the battery either.

Here is a picture of it, gives some idea.

I like that LED floodlight setup DAA, can you tell me where you picked it up? I'd like to get something like that to run off my jet-boat for those late evening moose cleaning tasks.

I have a slew of various headlamps and use them all the time in the winter up here, both for hunting and around the house projects. The Petzl's have been good little headlamps, but they've taken a back seat to some of the newer models. My favorite light that I'm using right now is called the Xera:
http://gemini-lights.com/products/xera

Being able to program the settings on it is handy for hunting (for me) and the thing has been very durable and held up in the cold quite well. The 4 battery pack runs a long time. I'm typically not a fan of battery packs that are not mounted to the headband, but I've gotten used to this one. What I have noticed with the different LED's while using them for night hunting is that if it's snowing, some of the LED's frequencies make the snow appear as though it's strobing. It'll drive you absolutely nuts looking at it for too long. The older CREE LED's don't seem to do this, so I always carry another headlamp with the older CREE bulbs as backup in case it starts to snow a bit. While I don't like using lights in the snow, it can be done, just need the right gear. Making shrouds for some of the LED headlamps can be a real adventure at Home Depot and Lowes looking for anything that will fit tightly around the light bezel. The Xera light fits a Shop Vac tube perfectly! Any of the newer headlamps I have are all Li-Ion packs or 18650 Li-Ion cells. The older Petzl's and Princeton Tech's get the Energizer Ultimate Lithiums and they last a long time.

I've heard really good things about those Zebralights and they look well built too.

Ya in fact I have bought another Steamlight.

Dave that would come in handy working out in the field on tractors and such, where did you get it?

I picked up the light from blitzpro.com, then mounted it on a telescoping paint pole.

Write up I did on it for my friends website here.

A man after my own heart: "taking care to offset the splices"

Hmm, that shop looks suspiciously like Dad's place?

Excellent writeup, BTW.

Good hunting. Lima Brav 0
