The SSN22 (I think) Seawolf Class Nuclear Submarine suffered a collision with an unknown object a week ago and now the speculation begins.

What did they hit?

Here's a video that gives some indication

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VKQPBhu0z0

but, as with an incident that happened over 60 years ago, we may never know the truth. That was when the Thrasher sunk off New England while during sea trials. And by the way , some confidential information about that one is being reviled due to Freedom of Information lawsuits, but the Navy is not very interested in revealing anything due to security concerns.

The Seawolf class subs are the most expensive ever built and the most capable in the fleet. There are only 3 of them and I don't know, but they have a Los Angeles class and a newer one, I think Virginia class that due the monitoring of Chicoms and Russian subs but maybe not as good as the Sea Wolfs that are (what?) 40 years old? And nobody knows what they do so well that they are still in service? That Three Billion Dollars must have been well spent?

And that's all I know about that stuff

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: also, when the San Francisco hit an uncharted seamount in 2007? it was out of service for more than 3 years and one sailor was killed, so hitting stuff underwater is not unknown. You would think they have some friggin' type of radar so they don't crash very often, but who knows?

Well ............. The Seaview submarine had windows up front so that they could see where they were going.
