Was out hiking around in the desert today and found a 25-35 brass casing. Looks like it's been there quite a while. Gotta wonder what the story behind that shot was.

Even called in a coyote, but not nearly close enough for the pointed stick.

Mostly in the California desert, I have found some pretty big stuff like 20mm cannon brass, occasionally a 50BMG. I'm pretty sure it's mostly from aircraft. I even found a Geiger counter in the hills around Tonopah, NV. It was not in working condition. Sometimes I find, oh! I found a couple old touring cars, well stuck in the mud. I found a wagon once, kinda like a "Buckboard" but the wooden spoke wheels were too big to get in the back of my cousin's Bronco. Would have made a decent yard ornament.

But, regular rifle brass, it's usually pretty standard stuff, 30'06, 270, etc. nothing remarkable.

But, for sure, I can't resist picking up an old cartridge case and looking at the headstamp, then shaking out the sand.

I one time had a problem with chambering in my 6mmRemington and quite a few of the guys in the club knew I used a 6MM on day stands. At a meeting one night a member I knew fairly well but had never hunted with him,he came up and handed me a baggie with a dozen 6mm cartridges in it. Even though I had tossed them randomly, this was in a remote location within 10 feet of the Mexican border. He didn't ask, and I didn't tell him that they were intentionally discarded because I had not trimmed them to length and they just didn't chamber cleanly. I went through a whole box, chambering each one and just tossed them over my shoulder. THIS GUY THOUGHT HE FOUND ME SECRET HUNTING LOCATION. I didn't want t break his heart. But, this was a case of reputation. Not a lot of people used a 6MM Remington and this was for my Model 600, which I still have and several of my offspring will be fighting over this rifle when I pass away because just about every one of them had used it as a kid, and I admit, it's a trim little package and probably the last item I'd get rid of, if times were tough.

Good hunting. El Bee

Yeah, but today's 'woke' children are too stupid to realize that your guns are what keeps someone from taking your wife, kids or truck.

Answer;
You're white............ Feel guilty about it.
You're male .............Feel guilty about that, too.
Since you prefer the company of pretty girls over pretty boys you're obviously a homophobe ........ more to feel guilty about.
You own guns and a large dog implying that you are a dangerous threat to society ........ even more to feel guilty about.
You're a bad man.
You're in contact with a known subversive in Northern Arizona who owns a 'camp' where other people of questionable political affiliation have gathered in the past. ........ much to feel guilty about.
You wear a Trump hat. Don't try to deny it, I've seen it. That alone proves that you're a racist. ............. Feel extra guilty about that.

Your only hope is to give up eating meat, drink white wine, squat to pee and wring your hands a lot while saying "Oh my" when you think on all of the things you feel guilt over.

And that, my friend is 'Woke'. [Eek!]

Edit 4 spell.

I only wear that hat after dark, and only in my back yard while tending and pruning my cacti in Braille. I feel pretty safe as I am well armed-as well. Pinky thinks I'm nuts. Tillie is sure of it! Tillie is my ex-pet dog who's affections have been stolen by my son in law! The little tramp sleeps with him upstairs every night! I'm about ready for an ultimatum, it's either him, or me!

I just thought of something. When tramping around in the desert, or mountains, for that matter, I'm always looking around. I can spot a worked stone or rock and find a pocket for it. I have found sort of quarries, occasionally obsidian flakes, sometimes jasper, a little turquoise once in a while and sometimes just shaped stone like for a Metate. I found an area in northern Arizona that was littered with primitive tools, the rocks were nothing special but they were obviously ancient and primitive in style, and this was in wide open plains no hills, very little terrain features, no washes, but obviously an Abattoir. I mean with all the "made on the spot tools" and all I could think of was Bison, know what I mean? Everything I saw only had one working edge and was napped from pebbles that were a hand filling size. Primitive and efficient and no practical reason to carry them once they fulfilled their utility. Still, I marveled at what must have happened in this spot 10,000 years ago, or who knows?

One time I walked along a remote highway in northern Nevada. What caught my eye was the chalcedony flakes that indicated a place where maybe a crew had been working and obviously keeping the projectile points and leaving everything else that didn't turn out the way they liked. But, these were still artifacts made by primitive stone age people and I just get blown away when I find things like this in the wide open places and they sit there for thousands of years, undisturbed. Well, I'm not good enough to date these things unless I might find a Clovis point or a broken lance or spear point. I have a few ground and shaped articles that aren't chipped at all, some are just flat, maybe for scraping hides but I have a handful that appear to be very similar in size and shape and they look to me to have pretty much the same purpose, and these things were found hundreds of miles apart. It's just keeping my eyes open when wandering while hunting, or multi tasking.

You guys that don't pay attention to the durable evidence laying around in plain sight are missing out!

Good hinting. El Bee

A "PS" to above about keeping your eyes open. In this case, I was actually fishing and saw what looked like a Styrofoam float of some kind, maybe 5" long and 3' in diameter and it was solid granite, when I picked it up and immediately knew what it was! It was a MORTAR for a METATE. (actually, I showed it to ko ko a few months ago and he can attest to the uniform shape)

So, I knew what it was, right on the shoreline where it could have been washed up....yesterday, maybe? I lost all interest in fishing at that point and started looking for the mate, the "metate" or for all you white boys; a MORTAR AND PESTLE. Up and down the shore and up the sand bank a considerable distance and I noticed the oak trees with nuts that somebody would want to pound or grind into a paste for tasty cookies, etc.

It took me around 30 minutes as I got further and further away from my first discovery but eventually, there it was! It was OF COURSE, upside down and looked just like any other 40 pound rock until I turned it over and exposed the "football" shaped concave depression that might have been cleverly disguised for maybe thousands of years? The granite was an exact match for the mortar!

When you think about it, it made a lot of sense to leave it on the shore for next time when they would be harvesting nuts, I didn't notice any pinyon pines right then but perhaps some squaw had been handing down the secret location of the overturned rock for generations, who knows but the craftsmanship was perfection so this wasn't something that was made for one time and discarded, they planned to use it for generations, I suspect?

One thing I regret is there was a point of rock on the reverse side and I chipped it off with a hammer so that it sits on the hearth without rocking. But, if you were grinding nuts, you would want that "pointy" part on the bottom to dig in to the ground and keep it from moving around. All in all, it was superbly designed and crafted and of MUSEUM quality, and I can assure you that I have observed examples in museums that were of much inferior quality; it's a beauty and I am very proud of it!

Look around! this stuff is durable and just waiting for you to trip over it!
