Went out looking at country yesterday. Seen several mule deer does with fawns and they all looked slick and fat. Not an antler one to be seen. Coming down off a high ridge came around a corner and thought that is a weird deer. They were weird but they were ewes, lambs and some real young ram big horn sheep eating along side the road.
Today took the other half to the top of the mountain while the gate is still open. He wanted to walk off this ridge line to see how it really lays and how the elk travel it. He ended up have 4 wild horses bird dog him down the ridge line for a ways. Dog jumped a grouse. But he said he wasn't walking off into the hell hole the grouse flew into.
I poked around on the ridge line in a different direction. No sign of anything. BUT! Did have some coyotes howl at me and bark. Which I haven't heard a coyote up here in a long time.
Hubby and dog got off the mountain okay. Bumped something but wasn't sure what it was. No real fresh sign of anything. Trying to find a buck deer up here is getting frustrating. Did see 2 whitetail bucks right along the Salmon river walking along on our way home. Of course they were on private land. I will shoot anything with a horn this season.
Really needs to cool off and rain. Everything is crunchy and bone dry. No elk bugling anywhere up here. Did see some fresh scrapes last weekend on the top of another mountain side. It seems like everything is behind a month for normal time this season.
