Got a question for ya;
I'm thinking on planting a cherry tree right up next to a palo-verde tree. Trunk to trunk. Branches intermingling.
Cherry tree blooming pink in early spring and the palo-verde tree blooming yellow in early summer.

Thoughts ?????

Should be beautiful the only problem is if your soil is not well drained you could over water the Palo Verde keeping the cherry alive !

Yes, and some Desert Willows have white flowers. I have two Palo Verdes on my property. Both from seed, about 10 years ago. This is exactly like the reason why I cultivate so many Plumaria because they remind me of the islands, especially Oahu. The palo Verde reminds me of my favorite state, AZ. When I had that house in Yucca valley, I had Mesquite, Ironwood, Palo Verde and Desert Willow....because I'm a desert rat! I dug up a Palo Verde at the rental and OMG! That tap root goes all the way to China! I didn't get it all and it wasn't successful, but it did linger for a while.

Ever since the drought conditions here in SoCal, people have been looking for an alternative to a green manicured turf. Everybody is going to something similar to Phoenix type of landscaping. Everybody has their version, mine includes artificial turf. But still, weeds grow in artificial turf! And, I'm finding out that some maintenance is required, like maybe vacuuming, and preventing sand for those weeds from having a foothold. Right now, I use RoundUp on a spot basis.

Anyway, Palo Verde is easy to spot and it's become quite popular around here, along with Floss Silk, never before seen here. I have one of those, too. Doing quite well.

I also have a Live Oak/scrub oak that is starting to outlive it's welcome. And a fig, both courtesy of neighborhood birds, I did not plant them!

Yes, since I retired, apparently I have a latent green thumb, according to my daughter. It's a good thing my property is not large.

If I ever actually move to Arizona, I WILL HAVE A SAHUARO! Last time I checked legal ones were going for a hundred bucks a foot! And then you have to sink three feet in the ground. But, I must have one. There is actually a sahuaro not far from here. It's in Montclair, pretty big, too! I'd love to hear that story.

Some of the very best sahuaro's are on the Papago, along the same latitude as the OrganPipe, and the Papago has a few of them too, extreme southwest of the reservation. There is an arboretum in Palm Springs that has the largest Ocotillo I have ever seen! over 30 foot tall and robust. I have one but it's dying if not already dead. Damn! cost $200! But my false ocotillo are growing like weeds, easily 20 foot tall. Here's the secret to desert flora, water the damned things! They may not NEED it, but they appreciate a little water, just like palms.

Okay, pretty much exhausted that topic, eh?

Good hunting. El Bee
