The Allen is most easily identified by a green back and the nearly identical Rufous is orange on the back. I've never seen one around here, maybe the Allen's chases them all away. Saw an oriole this morning, oops, empty feeder!

However, both the Black throat and Allen's nest in the same lemon tree next door. It's just like coyotes with their territories.

The Arizona desert is a great place to see a big variety of hummers. Another place that just blows me away with the numbers is Lake Henshaw down close to San Diego. Large trees in the campgrounds, forget if they are Cottonwoods or Oak? But no shit, there must be thousands of the flying jewels.

Good hunting. El Bee

The hummers have been hard on the feeder since sunrise today.
They are still on it and fighting hard.
Usually they hit it in the morning and kind of come and go all day and at night they come back hard.
Don't know if something is up with the weather or future weather to come?

Imagine what it is like in Central and South America, true jungle. I understand they have more than 25 species of hummers. However, I think ours are the most colorful, most of the S American types mimic the jungle, greens and blues. My vote for the most gorgeous is the Calliope. They are unbelievably beautiful. AZ is full of them, here, not so lucky.

Yes, our cat could give a shit, after many failed attempts at bird murder. He is to fat to do much cat jumping and swipery anyways. We put out a single feeder, almost year round, and he likes to look at them buzzing around it, but quickly loses interest. They even taunt him by hovering about 6 inches from his head but he plays it cool.

Now if a mockingbird or a big blue jay messes with him...he goes berzerk.

I had a little female calico cat once that was a pure killing machine. Calico is perfect camo. I saw her snatch every manner of bird, including hummers. Always amazed me how she would hunt. She always had a setup of some kind. She would analyze the situation, then plan her ambush. She would be wherever she needed to be to maximize her success. I couldnt put a bird feeder out with her cause that was way to easy. She would kill cottontail rabbits if they ventured in the yard, and one day she had someones fluffy white pet rabbit in her mouth, dragging it away. I had seen it around the yard, I knew it was toast. She hated other cats and would fight to the death if needed. One day a doberman was fucking with her and she nimbly plucked his eyeball out of the socket with one half assed swipe...and didnt even think twice about it. Licked her paw a couple times and sauntered away for a nap.

Awsome feline.

Did you know that 99 out of 100 Calico cats are female? Might even be higher?

We had a calico, I wouldn't say she was super loving with anybody, yet not standoffish either. In our bedroom under the pullman there is a cabinet where we keep folded towels. Lilybeth would open the door, crawl to the back stack of towels, but not before closing the door behind her. Coyotes got her.

I sort of knew that I think? This one was a dark one. Maybe not a true calico?
Oh well... why are we talking about cats?

I only have two feeders and right now the little bastids are drinking them dry in about a day. All of them here are black chin, until the Rubies arrive on their way south. They won't be here long, thankfully, because they take over the feeders from the black chins.
Both of our cats will and have caught hummers, and about any other land dweller or bird. As Mark mentioned, we have a calico and she has her spot in the flowers where she will lay in ambush for as long as it takes and blends right in.
Thankfully the cats rarely catch a hummer. What them seem to specialize in out voles and mice and I'm all for that.
