I have a few favorite authors, Clancy, DeMille, a few others. But, many years ago, I thought I had read just about every Louis L'Amour novel, at least, at the time? I had no interest in the Sackett adventures for some reason? I really liked the ones that featured southwest indians like Mojave and Papago and Apache.

Anyway, I picked up a hardcover at the thrift store of one I had heard about: LAST OF THE BREED. I'd say it's very different from anything I read 30 years ago, and all I read was paperbacks given to me by an old high school chum in a box. I don't recall ever actually buying one of his books?

This involves an Airforce Pilot stranded in Siberia, and he was an old school Sioux from Idaho. He traveled hundreds of miles through barren tundra and forest with tigers and bears and KGB agents after his ass. He was the last of the breed and a Bad MF'er.

I liked it, and you will too. They never explained if he got the girl, but you had to believe that he did, somehow?

Read that one a long time ago. Not his usual work but very well done & a good read.
He also did a book of poetry titled Smoke From This Alter. I gave my wife a copy to show that I'm a sensitive type of guy. She liked the book but didn't buy the sensitive stuff.

Joe Mack...one of my heroes! If I remember right he made a bow string out of caribou sinew? Also, didn't he pole vault over the wall of the gulag?

Read this book some years ago and gave it to a young man and spurred his love of reading.

If you guys like good mysteries in an outdoor setting, the C.J. Box books with Joe Pickett as a Wyoming game warden are very good reads.

Been on a David Baldacci kick as of late. He has a character that is ALMOST better than Jack Reacher...guy is an Army CID investigator by the name of John Puller.

With my back surgery and inability to hunt, I am reading a book about every 4 days.

Booger, I'm a little better than every four days but I can't say by how much?

I also have read a few by CJ Box.

There is something about reading that beats the hell out of TV and even books on tape, although I see the value while driving long distance.

I still think Clancy was the best fiction writer, him and Obama.

LB,
My folks only had 8th grade educations, but were some of the smartest people I know. My dad read everything he could get his hands on, and could build a house, overhaul an engine, and do most things in between.

My mom signed me up for a library card at 6, and set me up on a summer reading program when I wasn't in school.

My wife, on the other hand, didn't have that support at home. She has been introduced to the books I read when we travel through audio books.

I love Clancy as well, and discovered a new author by the name of Alex Berenson...you might check him out. He writes about current events from the standpoint of a guy that worked for the CIA and was embedded with the Taliban. His book series begins chronologically just after 9/11.

My mild OCD dictates I read everything in a series in order...for that I use the website orderofbooks.com. It gives you authors and the books in the series in the order they were written.

Yes, everything in chronologic order. That's what I'm doing with Robin Cook whenever I find him in thrift stores. But I have a hard time recognizing what I have and haven't read because of the one word titles. I just read CELL and would like to ask my doctor if he might have read it. I wonder what the medical community thinks of his books?

Use to be a heavy reader.
At one time I had all of Louis L'Amour. Very few I hadn't read 5 plus times.
Then got into Tony Hillerman, Rick Frances, Cornwell, and a couple others who's names escape me this morning.
I've read a lot of carp too. Being a fire lookout for 30 years you read a lot of books. Now I use the computer to read forums and weather maps.

Along the same lines as everything in chronologic order:

I start out reading my email on the iPhone or my laptop. Then go do stuff.

Then, early afternoon, I turn on TV. Then, I do other stuff, including go somewhere. Meaning, I never watch TV in the morning.

I don't crack open a book until after dinner, eventually, I find time to sleep. I might also watch some TV in the evening.

To be honest, I'm on the damned computer off and on all day.

To be honest; just like everybody else, I carry the damned cell phone just about everywhere, including the nightstand when I go to bed.

That's my routine, in a nutshell.

I really have to wonder how a man in prison can hide his cell phone up his ass? There's a word for this special location, but I can't think of it right now? ko ko?

I think they call it a "Prison Purse"? I'd think twice about storing my Buck Knife up there.

Those Jitterbug Flip phones are so cute! Does yours have the big numbers? I smile when I see an elderly gentleman trying to make a call!

But I hear ya about not getting wrapped up in the damned things. Speaking of which, a thousand dollars for a freaking phone? Facial recognition, whoopee!

Since I can't get out and about much anymore I too have become an avid reader. However I have taken a little different route than most here. I decided to read some of the books that my fellow soldiers/commanders are mentioned in and even written.
1. Delta Force by Col Charlie Beckwith. Charging Charlie was the first Delta Commander and was a damn good one, in my opinion, but not the best. If you read the book some will tell you that maybe the book should have been titled "What the Colonel Meant Was"
2. Inside Delta Force by Sergeant Major Eric Haney. He was the senior enlisted man and ran the selection course, didn't like him then, don't like him now. Read he book make up your own mind.
3. The Quiet Professional - Dick Meadows by Alan Hoe. Without a doubt one of the best SF soldiers who ever shit between a pair of combat boots. A must read.
4. Never Surrender - General Jerry Boykin. I served with the General in Delta when he was just a young Captain who would later go on to do great things in the Spec Ops field. He commanded just about every SF outfit there is to command to include Delta and JSOC and a few others we don't talk about. He took a .50 Cal in the Grenada invasion and lived to tell about it. He made his third star, reassigned to the Pentagon and later fired by President Bush Jr. Another must read.

Well, JP, I kind of assume that you might be familiar with Hurlburt Field, a former SAC Base. It's quite an operation, training wise. Although I hear Blackwater also has a good training facility?

There's a pretty good one by a Marine Corps sniper, can't remember his name? There's another one I've read recently, can't find it and can't remember the name; something like " Charlie Company"? Both Vietnam.

Good hunting. El Bee

PS, I can't imagine getting hit by a 50BMG? And, live to tell about it. Also, never heard of it before?

Very familiar with Hurlburt Field and all the surroundings. Col Boykin is not the only SF guy to take a 50 and live through it, Col Beckwith did also. Beckwith commanded a Special Forces unit codenamed Project Delta (not to be confused with the Delta Force) in Vietnam. He was critically wounded in early 1966 (he took a .50 caliber bullet through his abdomen), so badly that medical personnel initially triaged him as beyond help. In triage, after surgeons had pushed him to one side as a hopeless case. Beckwith survived mainly due to his superb conditioning and iron determination. After recovery, he took over the Florida Phase of the US Army's Ranger School, transforming it from a scripted exercise based upon the Army's World War II experience, into a Vietnam-oriented training regimen. He was known as an extremely tough trainer, even by military standards. Leonard if we should ever meet I could tell you stories that you would not believe, my wife keeps telling me "you should write a book."

JP,
I take it you were in Delta Force?

If so, did you happen to know my buddy SGM Shannon 'Mac' McKinney?

He passed away about 2 years ago from cancer...he and I went to college together here in Central Kansas.

The name is vaguely familiar but I can't place it or put a face to it. I left Delta in 80 for another anti-terrorist unit in Europe and then back stateside for another anti-terrorist unit until retirement in 84. When did you friend serve in DF and/or retire and was he a SGM when in Delta? Sorry to hear of his passing, so many that I served with have passed, makes me wonder at times - am I next?

We graduated from college in '83.

He joined the Army in '86 and went into the Rangers, and I believe passed Delta selection in the late '80's or the early 90's.

Cancer finally got him at 54...something I guess he picked up in the Gulf.

He led the Delta assault, along with the Rangers and 101st A/B on Saddam's son's compound when they finally got those two rascals.

I really salute you and all you and your brothers in arms do/did to keep us safe here at home...stuff we may never find out about!
