I don't know the back story, but it looked pretty stupid to me.
We talk about command presence but here there was none. A lot of times it can diffuse a situation like this before it starts. [ February 23, 2017, 01:18 PM: Message edited by: 4949shooter ]

Seemed to me we missed the initial confrontation? But, for a trained cop, he did not impress me. I would have been swinging from my heels, after they all jumped him, knock out a few punks. I think the best this guy can hope for is an accidental discharge. Any other scenario and he will lose. His job, his financial security and his freedom.
But, playing grab ass with that little punk went on much too long. He should have taken him down, choked him out or something besides waltzing around the yard and holding hands.
Good hunting. El Bee

I think there was about 3 different people filming this thing and you can get a different perspective from each of them. They are all on youtube.
It seems that he was an off duty cop who was holding this kid for something he had done as law enforcement arrived. When he was attacked and pushed over the hedge, it sounds like at that point he was in his own yard. He discharged the weapon to scare off his assailants and keep the kid detained until law enforcement arrived.
Of course, the whining thumb suckers already had it portrayed as a cop shooting at kids. Just as they always misrepresent the truth. The other youtube videos show clearly that he fired his weapon to scare off those who were coming to rescue the little hoodlum.
